Posted August 9, 200321 yr I missed Channel 4 - Jim Berry, but I imagine he joined the other broadcast outlets in Miami leading with extensive coverage of the Dolphins loss and running the Marlins win second or third with no interviews, no comments and two of the three I watched didn't even bother to mention Marlins could be tied for the wildcard lead if the Phillies lose tonight. Outrageous. Simply outrageous. Any bets on how the Herald plays it tomorrow on their front page? :mischief2
August 9, 200321 yr Any bets on how the Herald plays it tomorrow on their front page? :mischief2 IF the Phillies lose (they will), then the Marlins will be on the front page. If the Phillies win, the Dolphins will be on the front page. That simple.

August 9, 200321 yr Author Perhaps I should have been clearer. I didn't mean to imply that the Marlins wouldn't be on the front page (did I say that?), I was really opining about which event (Dolphins or Marlins) would dominate the front page. And it will be interesting to see if they hold the *final* to reflect the Phillies/Giants outcome and how it impacts the Fish. My guess is if the west coast game goes beyond 1:00am, they won't. Time is money.

That simple. yup , I really need to agree with you there , Lets go Marlins , Football season hasnt started yet , so they shouldnt make a huge deal of football , even tho i love football when it baseball season talk about baseball not football
August 9, 200321 yr I will bet that the Dolphins get the majority of the coverage tomorrow. The Marlins win might be at the bottom of the front page, but I bet the Fins game will be plastered all over the place. Sigh, practice games.... C'mon, surprise me Herald & Sentinel...
August 9, 200321 yr Face it South Florida is a football town doesn't mean I agree with Dolphins getting extensive coverage since the Marlins are what hot right now.
August 9, 200321 yr Sitting here with my Sun Sentinel in hand- HUGE Dolphins press on the front page of the Sports - Marlins got the little side-strip next to it. Any shock there? No. Way to go, Marlins - taking the wild-card spot! Keep it up!

No. Way to go, Marlins - taking the wild-card spot! Keep it up! No article stating that the Marlins move ahead of the Phillies. :thumbdown
August 9, 200321 yr Another A-Hole, Dolphins play-by-play guy Howard David made some wisecrack last night during the Fins broadcast about the Dolphins having more people at a preseason game than the Marlins will ever draw. (or something to that effect) Jim Mandich just sort of fell silent as if to say "why in the world did you say that?" Stick it up your a** you decrepit old man. Everyone hates you.
August 9, 200321 yr also understand that these papers were printed before the Phils game was over....
August 9, 200321 yr Author Ramp, I guarantee you if the Dolphins were playing the Raiders last night in Oakland it would have made today's Herald. Richard Bush (Herald sports dept editor) made a conscious decision to play down the wildcard race completely exorcizing any mention of it from today's paper. If anyone read the Herald today, excepting a small box on the standings page, they would have no idea that the Marlins were in the hunt, nevermind tied for first place, nor would they know the Marlins are the hottest team in baseball. It was done purposely and with forethought. The same is true with the broadcast media who either ignored the Marlins move into a tie for first place completely or mentioned it begrudgingly as the throwaway line at the end of their piece, which of course, even this morning, ran second to the Dolphins practice game loss. Such is life in south florida where the Dolphins/Huizenga control sports media coverage. Is there a conspiracy? No. Is there a fear that's they'll be cut out of inside stuff on the Fins if they play the Marlins too big? Absolutely. It will be interesting to see how the Herald et al plays it tomorrow if the Marlins win and Philly loses tonight, as both games will be over before the *final* press deadline. My guess is even if the Marlins take over first place there will no big splash, just a begrudging acknowledgement. LeBatard has been strangely silent on the Fish lately, what better day to trot him out with for a quick bashing of the hometown team. We'll see what happens, I'd like to be proven wrong, but if history is any precedent, don't count on the Herald to do the right thing.
August 9, 200321 yr If anyone read the Herald today, excepting a small box on the standings page, they would have no idea that the Marlins were in the hunt, nevermind tied for first place The headline on the top of the paper in bold letters "Marlins surge into tie for wild card" didnt do it for you? Come on, get real, you always do this, did you get fired by the Herald or something?
August 9, 200321 yr Author The headline on the top of the paper in bold letters "Marlins surge into tie for wild card" didnt do it for you? Come on, get real, you always do this, did you get fired by the Herald or something? No Ross, I was never fired by the Herald. I will tell you though I have 20+ years experience in newspaper publishing and did build, and was publisher of, the largest chain of weekly in papers in New England, with ad linage second only to the Boston Globe in the entire region. Having sold them off I moved here in '92 and retired at 42. My Herald has no such headline, either on the front page of the paper, or inside on the front page of the sports section. Its the *** or the in the parlance, the final edition. Are you making this up? Do "we" have a problem? I hope you are not going to turn into an apologist for the Herald because frankly I always enjoy your posts. As for the Herald, which by almost any benchmark, is one of the worst local major market daily newspapers in the country. Knight-Ridder has a rotten reputation not only here but in Detroit and Philly and....well the list is endless.
August 9, 200321 yr I am not making anything up, and I dont appreciate the insinuation. I have the FINAL EDITION that was delivered to my house this morning. I guess the Herald made a special paper for you. Im not an apologist for the Herald, but that is the headline. Heres a cropped scan of the headline, by the way:

August 9, 200321 yr Author and BTW, if you go the herald website you'll find the above pictured headline as well, never updated. I don't what else to do except offer to two sources.
August 9, 200321 yr One source is fine for me-the one in front of my face. Thats all, nothing more to say.
August 9, 200321 yr Can we all agree this team is the most overhype team in this town.(period)Ever year the hype starts about this team about this time with all the press clipping. The media dogs fall all over themselves for anything from this guys. Did they fart? Did he pick his nose? Did he drink one or two cups of water? O Sh*t he broke a nail! They get all the press for what? My beloved Marlins and Canes don't get half the press this chokers I mean jokers ...lol.. get. Do the Dolphins own the media in this town? YES Do we SPORTS fans like them jamming this crap down our throats year in and year out? NO Will they(media) learn? I hope so.
August 10, 200321 yr I'd rather the Marlins be the quiet winner than the overhyped losers like the Dolphins were last night. Miami Media Attention = Jinx of Game? :mischief2
August 10, 200321 yr LMAO They played an encore(sp?) tonight of last's nights Dolphin game. WTF! Ithe game doesn't even matter and they lost!! and they show an encore! Pathetic...I hate the Dolphins.
August 10, 200321 yr alright alright. I understand everybody's complaints about the lack of coverage for the fish. They deserve more than a side column on the sports page I agree. Was there even a blurb on the Front Page? Anyway, It's not the Dolphins fault for the coverage. You guys said it yourself - Miami is a football town.(period  ) Miami is consistently good year in and year out so they gauge Miami's interest, what?, year in and year out. The Marlins have been hotter than hot for the last 2 1/2 months. You can't flip a whole towns (or states) interest because of what most media probably thinks is a fluke. In a BIG BIG way, I totally agree with the coverage complaint. Hell, at least you guys get coverage. No mention at all of the Marlins in my Albuquerque Journal-half the time they don't even include the score in the box! Local media is the driving force behind promoting this team and from what I've seen and heard they've done a shiity job, but its not the Fins fault. Pathetic...I hate the Dolphins. :fyou DOLPHINS RULE!!!!!!!!! :fyou :fyou
August 10, 200321 yr "Anyway, It's not the Dolphins fault for the coverage" Really, the fans might not see everthing that goes on BUT this statement is totally not true. People that work or cover the Dolphins have always been told to promote the team(Dolphins) by trashing and being critical of anything any team in this town does. Mostly those in the radio media, who have a forum. When your fighting for the entertainment dollar in this town. Some sports franchises(Dolphins) in this town that haven't done nothing in 30 yrs, go to the negeative attack on the other franchises that have some recent success (Marlins champs 97', Panthers 96' made the finals, My Canes 02' Champs). Jealousy, envy???? maybe but don't tell me they don't have anything to do with it. Believe me you might not see but the Dolphins PR Dept. has its fingerprints all over it($$$$$) O by the way This is :fyou :nono is not necessary not everbody loves those chokers..I mean jokers. A little respect for other people opinion
