August 27, 200521 yr My friend and I were discussing Todd Jones and hes like I cant wait till ST to get his auto next year. if im not mistaken wasnt he signed to a 1 year deal. Id love to get him signed to another year (if he doesnt retire) but hes gona want big bucks after this great year. So my question is....how many years was he signed to?
August 27, 200521 yr Author alrite thanks cape for the info. damn i hope he signs on for another year.
August 27, 200521 yr Jones has fit in real well. Like he said in today's broadcast....."I tried to retire, but they just kept offering me money". Hopefully we'll sign him up for another year in the off-season.
August 27, 200521 yr I'm gonna try and sport a handlebar moustache. I'll post pics when I'm done forming it.
August 27, 200521 yr I think it was a 1-year deal, but he took less money to come to Florida. 917729 He's on a one-year deal for $1.1 million. Cape, are you sure you're not thinking of Seanez who left us for less money? I remember at the time Jones was signed, people here and elsewhere were questioning the source (an Alabama newspaper) not only because no other paper was reporting it but because the large salary due to Jones, who only made $450K last year that wasn't even guaranteed that as it was a major-minor league contract and didn't pitch incredibly well last year.
August 27, 200521 yr I thought Seanez wanted to re-sign with us but we snubbed him in favor of Riedling. Hindsight is 20/20 I guess.

I just think the FO showed little to no interest in retaining his services.

August 27, 200521 yr I searched for the topic about Jones' signing and found it... http://www.marlinbaseball.com/forums/index...topic=35514&hl= Funny to see what you guys were saying about the guy back then, especially a certain Pennsylvanian members really harsh stuff. :lol

Dec 10 2004, 10:28 AM I'm sorry but he's garbage
August 27, 200521 yr He'll be commanding alot more money next season. He may be priced out of our price range.
August 27, 200521 yr Wagner, Ryan, Hoffman all figure to be more pursued than Jones in the offseason. Jones is unlucky to hit the free-agent market in a year where there is a surprising amount of quality relief pitching available.
August 27, 200521 yr For as well as jones has pitched, i doubt that an aging veteran who emerged as a solid closer again after 4 seasons of being mediocre to terrible is going to command a lot more money. Considering that jones himself whos been on 7 teams since 2000 has only played well here since. If we try to re-sign him i think he'll sign back wiht us.
August 28, 200521 yr I thought Seanez wanted to re-sign with us but we snubbed him in favor of Riedling. Hindsight is 20/20 I guess. 918148 No dice. Reidling was signed very late in the offseason. Seanez very early. I think Seanez wanted to come back, but just wanted a little more money than what the Marlins were offering 918149 Seanez wanted to live out west and was reported have taken a smaller contract. Seeing that the bulk of his contract with the Padres is tied to incentive clauses, there is probably a lot of truth to that report. Isn't the minimum more than 450k after X amount of years? 918156 I'm not aware of a pay scale or minimum based on MLB service time, but I would imagine that would be thrown out the window if the player was signed to a minor league contract with an option of a major league contract if they made the team out of spring training as Jones' 2004 contract stipulated (see Lenny Harris). Anyways, I think Jones will re-sign. The club will likely make a strong effort to re-sign him and Alfonseca. And keep Mota too. With Villone signed through next year, that's a strong foursome. However with Nate Bump recovering from injury, Riedling unlikely to come back and Logan Kensing out for the year we're looking a little short in long relief. But the Marlins were probably going to piece together that part of the 'pen anyway.
August 28, 200521 yr If Pavano taught us anything, it's that one brilliant season is all you need to command a large contract.

Seeing that the bulk of his contract with the Padres is tied to incentive clauses, there is probably a lot of truth to that report. I can't remember where I read it...either floridamarlins.com or from the sun-sentinel...it was in an article talking about how Rudy opened up some Ice Cream parlor in San Diego and had named different items for his team mates. In the article it spoke of how Seanz wanted to stay with Florida, but that the Marlins FO would not raise their offer, an offer that, to Seanz, was too little. The article then went on to say what a crappy decision that was, considering the year Seanz has had w/ the Padres... I dunno, maybe the writter was full of BS...but that's what I remember reading! :plain
August 28, 200521 yr !!!!! WTF does that have to do w/ Todd Jones?! *only correlation I see...is that you have a Marlins Ball...and Jones plays on the Marlins :mischief2
