MARLINS CHATTER

Among the things the Marlins learned about their farm system this year:

? Right fielder Jeremy Hermida (.293, 18 HR, 63 RBI, 23 steals in 118 games at Double A Carolina) has put himself in good position to be a regular in 2006. ''Just his plate coverage and pitch recognition point to him being an everyday player,'' GM Admin Beinfest said.

? Besides Jason Vargas, Beinfest expects four other pitchers -- lefty Scott Olsen and right-handers Josh Johnson, Logan Kensing and reliever Chris Resop (24 saves at Carolina) -- to challenge for jobs next spring.

Olsen, a strong candidate for the 2006 rotation, and Kensing have missed several weeks with elbow tendinitis, but surgery is not needed. Johnson (12-4, 3.87 ERA in Double A) ''has an above-average fastball and great maturity,'' Beinfest noted.

? Beinfest said Robert Andino (.269, 5 HR, 48 RBI, 22 steals, 26 errors at Double A) is ''more of a natural shortstop'' than Josh Wilson (.259, 17 HR, 82 RBI, 19 errors at Triple A), but ``both have the ability to be big-league shortstops. Andino can be spectacular in the field.''

Shortstop is unsettled, with Alex Gonzalez entering free agency.

? Keep an eye on rising 1B prospect Bradley McCann (a sixth-round pick from Clemson in 2004 who had 28 HR and 106 RBI in Single A) and former Arizona farmhand OF Reggie Abercrombie (.253, 10 HR, 23 RBI in 49 games at Double A). ''Reggie has probably the most raw tools of anyone I've played with,'' Hermida said.

? Right-hander Jeff Allison, the Marlins' No. 1 pick in 2003 who battled a substance-abuse problem, has ''been terrific . . . at times, dominant'' at Greensboro (5-4, 4.18 ERA), Beinfest said. . . . Lefty Taylor Tankersley, picked in the first round in 2004 (before Vargas), finished 3-7 with a 4.90 ERA with two Single A teams but pitched better recently and should start 2006 at Double A, Beinfest said.

If Kensing is having Tommy John, I don't see how he challenges for a job, but whatever. Maybe he's not having it after all, or Jackson is just wrong here.

Some of the other stuff is interesting too, such as how high Beinfest seems to be on Andino.

I also think starting Tank at AA is a good move, even though he struggled at low A, because he, strangely, pitched better at high A. Maybe in the offseason he can get some control back and become part of a new stud rotation at AA with Jeff Allison, depending on where they start Jeff.

great article wanks :)

Resop for a starting job? Is that for a setup perhaps or a closer spot? Or do you all think middle Relief?

It will be interesting to see what Johnson does with the call up now. If he does good indeed he could fill that last starter spot in spring. What a young rotation that will be, wonder if that is good or bad.

Interesting penmenship describing Andino and Wilson. Andino is said to be spectacular and inconsistent, piling up many errors on routine balls (27 errors in all) while Wilson is consistent but not as physically gifted.

I haven't seen Allison pitch but I don't see how he is "terrific" with those stats.

933536[/snapback]

Tells you something about Jackson's notes. I've logged every Allison game throughout the season and he certainly wasn't dominant for any one of them. Great in some. But not the dominating outings you see the best prospects put up on a routine basis.

Resop a starter? No....middle relief to begin with then set up man...then closer....only 22 and has not yet completed his 2nd yr of professional pitching yet...could be someone to reckon with on down the road in that closer spot....if his slider continues to develop and his 12-6 breaking pitch tightens up a bit he could win that spot....

So basicially expect a Willis/Beckett/Olsen/Johnson/Vargas rotation next season...dont be suprised if we let Alex go and throw Andido in the spot with Wilson to back him up...and expect Kensing and Resop to be parts of the bullpen from the get go next season...is that the gist of this article?

Well, it was Beinfest who said he was "terrific" and "dominant," not Jackson. Beinfest is probably just being over-enthusiastic, but who knows - maybe in person he's a better pitcher than his stats indicate, though I doubt he's that much better.

It could be I guess...

I'm not too excited about that though.

Resop and Kensing being in the bullpen doesn't bother me, in fact I rather like that(although I think Messenger should be tabbed future closer with Resop setting him up).

Letting Alex walk for Andido/Wilson bothers me. Dont get me wrong, I love Andido, but Alex is one of my 3 favorite Marlins, and if this offseason goes as I expect it, he'll be the only one left(The AJ and Mikey are the other two).

The rotation bothers me only to a point, since I want AJ back. But none of those scenarios really has me worried, because we'd still have enough to make up for the new faces.

I think just the fact that Allison is starting again is "terrific". Maybe that's all Beinfest was referencing. Recovery is a long road, so I'm interested to see how he fairs in a less-structured offseason. Hopefully, he'll be able to keep up his progress and come out next year throwing stronger.

That won't be our rotation next year....

Vargas definitely, probably Olsen, but no way we go with Johnson. I don't know that he's ready, and with 2 rookies already in the rotation he won't be sped along. We'll find a Moehler type to fill in, or maybe get creative and get a player.

Messenger walks way too many people to be an effective closer....i/m/o...Resop might be too young to place in the closer role just yet but he does thrive on that pressure thing....the more pressure the better he performs.....seems he has always been a pressure player....watch him up close sometime before he is to go into a game....he looks like a jumping bean.....twitching and legs jumping....getting himself ready to go......always fired up inside but does not show that side of him on the outside.

I for one hope we can sign a veteran pitcher to fill in

I should no better than the go against the man with the hookup, but Messenger has been brilliant for the most part this season(or when I've seen him), or as brilliant as a rookie pitcher can be. He made Pujols look like a little leaguer, in what I view as his most impressive pitch sequence to date. How about we just say with those two, Resop and Messenger, whatever roles they settle into in the near future, our bullpen wont have to be built from outside near as much. And, with Kensing and Tankersly both likely headed for the bullpen in the near future, it sounds like we will only have to do minimal plugging in.

Johnson, if he does well in his long relief role and spot starts if he gets him as a September callup, is probably very likely to battle it out with a couple of veterns with a minorleague contract/invite to ST for the last rotation spot. This is all moot if you are right and we "get a player", but I doubt many big time pitchers are going to be traded, and after The AJ and Jeff Weaver there isn't much on the free agent front heading into the offseason. Vargas has already earned his spot, and as Ralph said:

Vargas wont be a rook. Olsen showed promise earlier in the season, and shutting him down is IMO precisely so he can take one of the rotation spots next season. Josh Johnson is Brad Penny version 2, in how hard he throws, what he throws, even the same highschool in Oklahoma, so you know the orginization is all giddy about having another Penny. You could be right and say Johnson wont be added to the rotation next season, but your foolish if you dont think he'll get a chance to earn it in ST.

For all intents and purposes Vargas will still be a rookie next year. Your foolish if you think we would have 3/5 of our starting rotation comprised of rookies. Also, there is no chance in hell that Wilson and/or Andino will be starting at short. If we don't re-sign Gonzo, the Marlins will go after a vet SS - perhaps Furcal.

I dont care about intents and purposes, Olsen proved he could do the job in a small sample size, and Vargas, now a permanent member of the rotation, is showing a mentality of that above a rookie pitcher. He already acts like a vetern. As far as Andido/Wilson, they'd do just as well here as Furcal. We'll still have Pierre and Luiy, no need for 3 leadoff hitters, and Furcal would be the undoing of our superb defensive infield. Some 1B could handle his errant throws, which he has more of than good throws right on target, but Delgado is not one of those 1B. If we are going to break up the infield defense, I'd rather it be for league minimum than for what Furcal will ask for, which will likely be far more than what Rollins got. If Seabass leaves, Andido is the plug in.

Exactly. Although I think they'll sign a second or third-rate shortstop to replace Alex if it comes to that. But we should probably expect a big or name or two be linked with the Marlins with little prospect of the deal actually happening.

I see Resop over Messenger at closer too (eventually, probably not next year); Resop seems to be more of a strikeout pitcher than Messenger too.

About the rotation next year, I can see Ish coming back as the 'Moehler Type Vet' mentioned earlier. He won't cost as much as we paid this year, and though we know his WHIP is never going to be good, he is consistent, and with both Vargas & Olsen likely in the rotation next year that is what you want from your no 5. Johnson will likely be like Olsen this year and be called up when an injury hits for a spot start, then if he shows he has the ability stick around.

Interesting penmenship describing Andino and Wilson. Andino is said to be spectacular and inconsistent, piling up many errors on routine balls (27 errors in all) while Wilson is consistent but not as physically gifted.

Give Andino some time with Perry Hill and he could become stellar.

Vargas has been amazing this year so far, but can he duplicate it for a whole season. As good as he's been, next year he still has to prove himself. Starting the year with 3 young unproven guys could tax our bullpen early, and the bullpen never seems to be our strength in the first place. I think we'll spend money to get a decent SP and a decent SS this offseason.

There are no good SP on the market besides The AJ and Jeff Weaver, and if we are going to sign a SS might as well resign Seabass. Please quit saying Furcal, he would be a disaster here.

Just curious why you hate Furcal so much??? Furcal would be great for this lineup as someone else to be on base for Cabs and Delgado.

I dont hate Furcal. I just dont think he is as good as everyone thinks he is. Delgado is not a good defensive 1B and Furcal would be horrible with that combination...Delgado cant even handle some of Gonzos throws and he is much more accurate than Furcal. And we have 2 leadoff men already, dont need 3. Furcal is going to either St. Louis or Chicago.
