Should drugs be legal?

Featured Replies

We had this discussion a long time ago. But now we have newer posters and maybe others didnt give their opinions. Figured it should be recycled.

My opinion:

-Marijuana should absolutley be legalized and taxes for education revenue. Just no reason to make them illegal.

-Something has to be done regarding other, harder drugs as we are badly losing the "war on drugs." Possible solution, allow for clinics which would provide the substance to users in a clean, safe enviroment and attempts to get them off of the drugs. But the clinics also charge them much lower rates than the street rates. This would destroy the black market and the criminal aspect. The fees would pay for the clinics, though they may have to be subsidized(use what we spend fighting the black market now). I admit this policy isnt as strong as the pot policy.

Legalize Marijuana! Tax the hell out of it, it will still be cheaper than on the black market. Give the money to education or whatever else. IMO alcohol is a much worse drug than marijuana.

Harder drugs such as cocaine, heroin and crack need to be eradicated. There is no SAFE way of taking these drugs. Even "clinics" that offer the drugs in a safe way, meaning you may not die there, doesnt mean it wont destroy your life.

When I was a teenager in high school I experimented with many drugs. Drugs such as marijuana (which I still smoke), cocaine, extacy, acid and opium. I never did crack or heroin. The only "drug" I do is marijuana and I would say a good chunk of the population smokes it, my estimate would be up to 15 - 20% of adults.

I agree, it should be legal. But the sad fact is that it NEVER will be legal because the government likes to use old recycled propaganda and shove it down our throats, and we're just gulable enough to believe some of these lies.

Porpaganda #1 - Marijuana can kill you from smoking alone: HALF TRUTH. Smoking marijuana CIGARETTES can kill you. The rolling/cigarrette/blunt papers is what is unhealthy. Studies have shown if you use other meathods i.e. pipes then this is taken away.

Propaganda #2 - It's unsafe to smoke and drive at the same time: WELL DUH! It's also unsafe to drink and drive and if you are using this reason to keep it illegal then well... maybe village idiot is a more suitable possition in your life.

Propaganda #3 - Marijuana leads to harder drugs: Again, half-truth. Marijuana use in this country can lead to harder drugs ONLY BECAUSE it is sold on the black market along with harder drugs. If you look at what has happened in Amsterdam, cocaine use has actually gone down since making marijuana semi-legal.

There's many more but these are some had to hit. About Amsterdam, marijuana isn't actually legal, but they have sort of a turn the other cheek response. I mean that doesn't mean you can walk down the streets smoking because that's a no no. Don't expect this to stand for long though because other contries, such as this nation who likes to point a finger and tell others what to do, are pressuring to make it illegal which in 5 years it's predicted to become illegal once again. As for it ever becomming legal... don't hold your breath! This country would never NEVER admit the war on marijuana has failed and would never be able to place taxes on the drug. It's so easy to grow the damn thing. I mean sure they'd be able to tax Joe Shmo's smoke shop but what about Mr Pusherman who is on the streets selling it. Government only likes thing they can tax on like tobacco and alcohol and those aren't easy to make, I not saying you CAN'T, I am saying it's not extremely easy at all. I am all for it becomming legal but I don't expect much to happen with these goons in power using old recycled propaganda which isn't true.

No one has ever died from Marijuana, pot doesnt kill brain cells, pot doesnt cause birth defects, pot doesnt cause high blood pressure, pot doesnt effect the immune system, it doesnt cause cell damage.

I hope so.

I am against the legalization of marijuana. The last thing I want to see are more people getting high, but this time legally. There is no doubt in my mind that the drug, over time, causes brain damage and slows overall reactions. I've seen it.

An inaccurate statement I believe, as lung cancer can be contracted via smoking marijuana.

I'd rather people smoke pot than drink alchohol.

It just seems hypocritical to allow beer, etc. to be legal and have pot be illegal.

how's alcohol work for you then? shouldn't that be illegal too?

There are studies that show that for healthy people, alcohol (in moderation) is beneficial to your health. I don't think the same can be said for either pot or cigarettes.

Not at all...

I smoked pot in high school and I dont think its a problem like its made out to be. Id rather time, money, and energy be spent in alot of different ways then to fight pot smokers.

Legalize pot, tax it to high hell, open up prison cells for real criminals.

The other stuff...I have no freaking idea.

What about the thousands killed by drunks in auto accidents? I'm sure they have something to say about that...

I don't think it needs to be cracked down on like more lethal drugs, but it shouldn't be completely ignored.

Drinking in moderation and drunks are two different things.

I think he's talking about people that have a glass of red wine every three or four days. It's good for your heart.

It's friggin ridiculous that me sitting on my couch, watching a movie and smoking a natural plant is against the law. That is all.

I think personal drug use and possession should be de-criminalized. Addicts should be treated, and pushers and traffickers should be punished.

As far as Marijuana, legalize and tax. It should be easy after a while, because as soon as it becomes legal, it will "sell out" and become corporate. Big corporations will begin to get it farmed at a supreme quality and at a good price. Smoke Shops can finally add that final product that they couldn't (at least not up front in the store). That dude you know that grows some stuff in his basement will apply to become a small business owner and open his own smoke shop. All of which can be taxed. And all of it can be regulated by the FDA and the Surgeon General.

I would legalize marijuana in a heartbeat and tax it like crazy. I've never had the stuff (or alcohol for that matter) nor will I ever, so I want to make money off the people who do. :mischief

It'd be legal if the best marijuana was grown in this country anyway.

Personally, I don't think legalization would increase useage. I doubt there are many people in this country sitting around going "man I want some marijuana...if only it were legal."

Legalize it, tax it, give the money to schools.

I'm really not sure what to do about the other drugs. It is pretty stupid to throw someone in jail for using cocaine, but I don't think it should be legal either, so I really don't have an answer.

I'd rather people smoke pot than drink alchohol.

Not my point. You're going to decide whether something's legal based on whether it's healthy or not? That's stupid. OUTLAW POTATO CHIPZ.

Nice try, though.

Where did I equate things that aren't healthy with things that are illegal? I'm only pointing out that drinking doesn't imply you're going out and getting drunk, then driving home drunk, crashing and killing yourself and others. Nice try at the cheapshot though.

It is a truth that people go out and drink and get drunk. People then drive drunk. That is what is. Health has nothing to do with the issue. At all.

People who drink in moderation generally do so at home.

Wasn't a cheapshot. Good to see you can dish it out but can't take it.

Nope. Besides legalization of "pot" has been tried before by many states including TN, AK, etc. and they have gone back to criminalizing it.

I really don't need more "under influence people" in society or driving a car.

Then why not call for alchohol to be illegal under those same needs?
