Marlins Playoff Outlook

espn.com sports nation did the poll and 76.6% out of 2007 people said yes, i guess they just posted it so i though it'd be interesting to see what the biased group we call marlinsbaseball.com has to say... i say yes

It all depends on whether we continue to field a highly competitive team. All indications are that we will. So I voted yes.

There's too much talent on this team for anything short of another mutiny to keep it out of the playoffs long term. So, yes, assuming variables stay the same.

Big talent, but so many holes. I see many more seasons like this last one. Two hitters, two pitchers, and not much else...

I am going to disagree. We have 2 young guys right now(Vargas and Johnson) that can be studs, add Olsen in there and even tho it's a 3 lefty rotation, thats 5 pitchers, with 2 already at ace level and the other 3 extremely more than capable of being there very soon.

We had 2 bats only because Gonzalez, Lowell, and Pierre all seemed to forget how to swing the bat from the get go and Castillo was bothered by injuries. We are adding Hermida, still have Dook who is always capable of hitting .300 and occasional flashes of power, and say if we trade Pierre in a deal for Sheffield we will have a very sexy lineup, with Aguila(who has power potential) taking over in CF, Sheff in right. Say we sign a one year stop gap shortstop like Nomar, and we really shouldn't have any offensive problems.

The bullpen is the biggest concern IMO, and there might be 3 home grown guys(Messenger, Kensing, Resop) there from the get go, saving money to spend on the rest of the pen.

With the dedicated ownership, new couching staff, and savvy general manger, we have all the makings and ability to be something special for years to come.

Just from a cold statistical stand-point, we're going to be a better team next year than we were this past season, and with 3 (arguably 4 or 5) of our crucial players having "off" or downright awful seasons, we were in the playoff picture until the second to last weekend of the season, so as long as Cabrera, Delgado, Hermida, Willis, Beckett, Castillo and LoDuca stay healthy next year, Pierre and Lowell and the bullpen have no where to go but up.

If all the team needs is a change of pace, it won't take much to make the playoffs next year, as long as we continue to field a competitive team.

For some, some point might not be soon enough. I think its more realistic to say two years, based on the talent the Marlins have in the minors and the players they should still have then.

Absolutely. With most of the cancers of this team walking out the door, the Marlins have the pieces needed to make it back to the playoffs. A few minor tweaks here and there and Joe as their manager and we could be seeing that special something come back to this team in the very near future.

You're relying pretty heavily on a lot of very unproven prospects. I think Vargas and Hermida will work out eventually, but will it be this year? Maybe not. And the other guys...who knows. Unfortunately, by the time many of these parts mature and became major contributors, other parts will probably have left the team. It's going to be hard to get everything together all at once. Payroll is a bitch.

I think Big Tex, Cabs, and D-Train will be Fish for life, mostly because I think the FO wants to keep them at all costs. Olsen, Vargas, Johnson, Hermida will all be here at least 6 more seasons. Young players with talent are good as long as the veterns around them are up to the task of guiding. Delgado, Dook, Castillo, Big Tex are all high on my list in that respect: they wont let these kids get out of line, and in return they will give their all.

Castillo is the general of the offense

Big Tex is the general of the pitching staff

Girardi and his coaching staff are now the joint chiefs

and as it says in Psalms 24:3 by wise council we will wage our war

NL beware next year

Maybe so, but this team won a WS championship with a payroll of $50 million or so. Sometimes all you need is the right guys to come together and everything to happen perfectly. I don't know if Vargas, Olsen and Hermida will all be the studs that we all know they can be next season, but our chances are going to be alot better if these guys can do what Cabs and Dontrelle did in their first full seasons.

Cabrera, Willis and Beckett alone should guarantee us a playoff spot. Everyone else is just a bonus.

That's what we had last year and look what happened. :confused

It all depends on the offseason. What moves are made, what blatently obvious team helping moves are not made. How we fill out the roster in the bullpen and on the bench, what trades or signings we make for starters, how well me mix the veterns with the youngens.

Right now the only two free agents I think that are for sure to be back are Easley and Niner. It wouldn't suprise me at all to give the fulltime job to Andino from the get go, it wouldn't suprise me if we resigned Seabass for 2 years, and it wouldn't suprise me if we gave a 1 year contract to Nomar. Not one of the 3 ways we can go at SS suprise me.

I think after this season we've all learned to not have any expectations. That said, I have no idea if this team is a play-off calibre or not, I really doubt a managerial move is going to do anything significant with this group.
