He said schools in Miami-Dade were closed Monday and Tuesday, possibly the whole week. But I haven't heard about that since that time so I'm hoping they open up on Wednesday.

October 31, 200520 yr Miami-Dade County Public Schools Hurricane Information Tuesday, November 1st and Wednesday, November 2nd All Miami-Dade County public schools, adult education centers, offices and charter schools will remain closed on Tuesday, November 1st, and Wednesday, November 2nd , due to the large number of schools that have not had electrical power restored. We did that back in '96 when we got hit with a Blizzard and a rough winter missed like 22 days or something. They took away spring break and for like the last two months of school added on to school day by 30 min. Buuutt that was before we had block scheduling.(Not sure if y'all have that in South Florida)

November 1, 200520 yr I heard they are hoping for an extension of half the time missed, so if it turns out to be 10 days missed, we would make up 5 days. Not sure how that'll work out yet though, but it sucks to work without being paid extra, and I wouldn't call this a vacation :plain

I remember that after Andrew, United Teachers of Dade had to negotiate with the school board to pay us for the days first and then, make them up later. The school board hates to do that because, let's face it- they wind up getting screwed by people who either quit or retire and don't make up the days. I'm not on their side, but there's no such thing as being 'nice' in a business as cutthroat as education. I understood that the legislature has already forgiven all the days before Wilma. Jeb Bush EDUCATION Dade classes may resume Thursday Miami-Dade schools canceled class through Wednesday, hoping to reopen Thursday morning. BY MATTHEW I. PINZUR mpinzur@herald.com Miami-Dade public schools will remain closed at least through Wednesday as district leaders wait for electricity to return at dozens of schools around the county, officials said Monday. At least 45 of the county's 327 schools were still without power on Monday afternoon, and few others had electricity in the main building but not in portable classrooms. Spokesman Joseph Garcia said the district hopes to resume classes Thursday. ''We're crossing our fingers,'' he said. On Monday, Florida Power & Light Vice President Geisha Williams said all Miami-Dade schools would have power restored by Wednesday. She was not able to estimate when work would be finished in Broward, where fewer than half the schools had power. Broward classes are also canceled through Wednesday, with a decision expected in the next day or two about the remainder of the week. Rainy weather slowed some utility work Monday, Garcia said, but FPL had also restored power fairly easily at some campuses previously thought to be hard to fix. Scrapping Wednesday's classes means Miami-Dade will have lost eight days to Hurricane Wilma, plus four more to hurricanes Katrina and Rita. Superintendent Rudy Crew met Monday afternoon with Gov. Jeb Bush, who said last week that he was reticent to allow South Florida schools to dip below the mandated 180-day school year. He wanted school boards to tinker with vacation, holiday and teacher planning-day schedules before asking for a waiver. On the other hand, Bush said he would likely postpone administering the Florida Comprehensive Assessment Test in South Florida. Crew said he wanted at least a one-week delay on the tests, which are given in February and March. Last year, Bush granted one- and two-week extensions to hurricane-ravaged counties. Other than the lack of electricity -- and the darkened traffic signals that come with it -- Garcia said Miami-Dade's schools were ready to reopen. All significant damage was repaired by Sunday, and school buses are fueled and ready to roll. Only 13 campuses reported debris blocked access, and 34 reported downed power lines on or near school property. Crew plans to meet with the district's 900 principals and assistant principals on Wednesday, hoping to prime them for the task of resuming classes for more than 360,000 students who have been away for about two weeks. Last week, he announced a 10-point recovery plan that included extra tutoring at about 200 high-poverty schools and an increased focus on testing districtwide to determine students' strengths and weaknesses. November 1, 200520 yr UTD is meeting with Crew tomorrow at 1 Pm to figure out how to make up the days. UTD emailed a survey to all the members to rank the choices in order to get our input and said a combination of these will be needed. The choices were: -Replace remaining Planning Days with Student Contact Days. -Replace remaining Early Release Days with Student Contact time. -Replace any of the remaining Paid Legal Holidays (Veteran's Day, Thanksgiving Day, Martin Luther King Day, President's Day)with Student Contact Days. -Replace any upcoming recess days (Friday after Thanksgiving, Winter Recess, Spring Recess)with Student Contact Days. -Extend the workday in order to provide additional Student Contact time. -Add additional days to the end of the 2005-06 school year. (Remember you have already been paid for these days)
