December 5, 200520 yr DALLAS -- Next Fish to get tossed out of the Marlins' boat? Looks like Juan Pierre. According to clubs that have spoken with the Marlins, Florida is stepping up its efforts to move Pierre, now that Paul Lo Duca's ticket to New York has been booked. AP Photo Juan Pierre batted .276 and had 57 stolen bases in 2005.The Cubs, White Sox and Rangers appear to be the three most aggressive teams in the Pierre hunt. But the Dodgers, Tigers, Nationals and a half-dozen other teams have at least kicked Pierre's tires. However, indications are that the price tag on Pierre might be as hefty as any Florida has demanded so far. According to various sources who have had conversations with the Marlins' delegation, Florida has asked the Cubs for their top prospect, center fielder Felix Pie -- a potential deal-breaker. The asking price from Texas isn't any cheaper, though. It would include at least one of the names the Marlins sought in the Josh Beckett deal -- pitching megaprospects John Danks and Thomas Diamond. And from the White Sox, it's believed the Marlins have asked for either pitcher Brandon McCarthy or hot outfield prospect Chris Young. "Somebody is going to have to move a hell of a [young player] to get this guy," said an official of one team involved in these discussions. "If not, there are so many teams, somebody else will give up that [kind of player]." Now that Rafael Furcal has commanded $13 million a year and Johnny Damon figures to up his price to at least that level, Pierre (who is arbitration-eligible and a year from free agency) has turned into the most affordable leadoff option on the market. And the Marlins have played that card for all it's worth in the winter meetings. http://insider.espn.go.com/mlb/insider/col...yson&id=2248738
December 5, 200520 yr That's awesome Come on Beinfest do your thing. Please get me Russ Martin. PLEASE!!!
December 5, 200520 yr Sad that Pierre's price is set so steadfastly high, yet a superior defender, and better leadoff hitter in Castillo is given away in a deal that reeks of settling. I hope Beinfest plays this one right, but let's just say, I'm not optimistic.
December 5, 200520 yr 'bout time we got a bidding war going for one of these guys..... Go get 'em Beinseft!

December 5, 200520 yr Listen... JP is pretty much the last casualty in the "market correction" The Marlins do not need any more pitching prospects for him, as they have enough for the next 10 years now... Trade Pierre for a stud outfield, 2nd base, or catching prospect...
December 5, 200520 yr Brian N. Anderson and Brandon McCarthy, FTW! Yeah, really. McCarthy is a stud. Last 7 games: 42.2 IP 1.70 ERA 31 K's 8 BB 31 Hits 1.89 WHIP The kid is about to blow up.
December 5, 200520 yr Brian N. Anderson and Brandon McCarthy, FTW! That would be beyond amazing...I doubt the White Sox are really that dumb and their need for a leadoff hitter isn't exactly there considering the have Pods

Unless were going to trade some of these pitchers away, I dont see the need to acquire any more.

Marlins, how many of those pitchers that you just got are ready to step right in and be a front of the rotation player?

That's not to say I wouldn't welcome McCarthy, since that would probably end up being the best deal on the table (just because I don't see Pie or Cano being available...if either of them were, those teams would be linked with Hunter, not Pierre)

December 5, 200520 yr pitching is always in demand. always /baseball 101 Never said it wasn't, we'll just get less in return for it when we have a higher supply than we have open spots on the roster. /economics 101.
December 5, 200520 yr ..should have waited til after the winter meetings to trade Luis as well. Maybe, but the possibility is that they could get more for Pierre by not having Castillo anymore. The only viable leadoff options on the market right now are Pierre and Damon, and Damon will come at a significantly larger financial cost than Pierre. If the Marlins had two guys, that could have changed. Then again, if they had both, they could have sold them off individually charging more for the second one than the first. If they don't get a million times more for Pierre, Beinfest needs to have his head checked.
