December 5, 200520 yr Good to see a bidding war ensuing. And outfielder or Cano would be nice instead of more pitching. However if that pitching is McCarthy, I'll be hella happy.
December 5, 200520 yr It's either pay Johnny Damon whatever ridiculous amount Boras is asking for... or give the Marlins a top prospect for Pierre. Boras is helping. I think he wants seven years for Damon, right? And if Furcal got paid 13mill a year, Boras must be asking for the world for Damon.
December 5, 200520 yr We have got to get at least 2 more average rated Latin minor league pitchers. We simply dont have enough.
December 5, 200520 yr pitching is always in demand. always /baseball 101 Never said it wasn't, we'll just get less in return for it when we have a higher supply than we have open spots on the roster. /economics 101. economics doesnt always foster into baseball. regardless, our having a high supply of pitching shouldnt diminish the overall ability to receive anything in return when said pitching is in such high demand. you are still talking basic supply and demand, and teams are still going to want this pitching whether they like it or not.
December 5, 200520 yr Go get 'em Beinfest. Just when it looked like he was caving in to move players we get this type of glowing report. There is absolutely no reason not to get excellent value in return for Pierre.
December 5, 200520 yr Don't trade PIERRE!!!! If the Fish really want Pierre, they can always just sign him (for less than he's getting in arbitration) in a few years when they're competitive. Until then, cash in on an overvalued commodity.
December 5, 200520 yr :thumbdown DALLAS -- Next Fish to get tossed out of the Marlins' boat? Looks like Juan Pierre. According to clubs that have spoken with the Marlins, Florida is stepping up its efforts to move Pierre, now that Paul Lo Duca's ticket to New York has been booked. AP Photo Juan Pierre batted .276 and had 57 stolen bases in 2005.The Cubs, White Sox and Rangers appear to be the three most aggressive teams in the Pierre hunt. But the Dodgers, Tigers, Nationals and a half-dozen other teams have at least kicked Pierre's tires. However, indications are that the price tag on Pierre might be as hefty as any Florida has demanded so far. According to various sources who have had conversations with the Marlins' delegation, Florida has asked the Cubs for their top prospect, center fielder Felix Pie -- a potential deal-breaker. The asking price from Texas isn't any cheaper, though. It would include at least one of the names the Marlins sought in the Josh Beckett deal -- pitching megaprospects John Danks and Thomas Diamond. And from the White Sox, it's believed the Marlins have asked for either pitcher Brandon McCarthy or hot outfield prospect Chris Young. "Somebody is going to have to move a hell of a [young player] to get this guy," said an official of one team involved in these discussions. "If not, there are so many teams, somebody else will give up that [kind of player]." Now that Rafael Furcal has commanded $13 million a year and Johnny Damon figures to up his price to at least that level, Pierre (who is arbitration-eligible and a year from free agency) has turned into the most affordable leadoff option on the market. And the Marlins have played that card for all it's worth in the winter meetings. http://insider.espn.go.com/mlb/insider/col...yson&id=2248738 Extremely good news. Personally I want John Danks or Chris Young for Pierre. Say no to Pie though :thumbdown

Supply and demand are league-wide for the most-part, not based on what one team has. If a team has three top prospects, and there are twenty across the league, they'll each fetch the same value as if the team had only two with the same number league-wide. If anything, the team can be more selective in terms of whom it wants to trade. If you have only one blue chip prospect, you have less options than if you have three. Demand sets price in the current seller's market.
December 5, 200520 yr I can't believe it, but we're gonna get a kings' ransom for Pierre. The Cubs, Yanks, Rangers, and even the White Sox feel like they need a speedy guy in CF, and Juan is the only guy out there besides Damon. Just looking around the ESPN fan message board I was totally shocked at the prospects the fans seemed willing to give up for Pierre. Hopefully this one will make up for the Castillo BS.
December 5, 200520 yr Brian N. Anderson and Brandon McCarthy, FTW! Yeah, really. McCarthy is a stud. Last 7 games: 42.2 IP 1.70 ERA 31 K's 8 BB 31 Hits 1.89 WHIP The kid is about to blow up. Bah, 1.89 WHIP isn't anything to brag about, but I like that ERA.

December 5, 200520 yr mccarthy is going to be a sick, sick pitcher for many years to come in this game.

December 5, 200520 yr ..should have waited til after the winter meetings to trade Luis as well. maybe, maybe not. having Luis available as well would have meant an additional leadoff option available for teams. this would lessen each player's value. perhaps beinfest believed he could get the most value for pierre given his age and speed if he were the only one available. who knows.

The post I responded to was in the first page and I didn't see Juanky's response. You can delete it if you want. I don't care.
December 6, 200520 yr you are still talking basic supply and demand, and teams are still going to want this pitching whether they like it or not. I don't think there's a higher demand for pitchers than position players. Now is there a higher demand for pitchers than shortstops? Of course, because there's only 30 starting shortstop positions and there's atleast 350 major league roles to fill. It's the same reason why outfielders are on nearly every team's wish list.

December 6, 200520 yr Just my two cents from Chicago, but I can't see the White Sox unloading McCarthy or Young for Pierre. Ozzie is really high on both of those players (especially Young). Ozzie's quotes out here last week was that he wanted to see Young battle Anderson for CF next year and was unsure of Anderson's defense. While I would love to see a Pierre in CF for the World Champs next year, I think unless the Marlins ask for a different set of players it won't happen. Now the Cubs are getting desperate. They lost out on Furcal and might overpay to get a leadoff hitter and outfielder to replace/dump Corey Patterson. Right now they don't have a RF or CF (not even considering Corey) and they have a rookie in LF. The Cubs IMO are the best option for Pierre. The Yankees could make a bid but unless you're getting one of their top young pitchers who else do they have in their farm system. And the Rangers need pitching... although a guy like Pierre couldn't hurt. As for a former South Florida resident and follower of the Marlins (as my second team behind the ChiSox), I am sad to see all the dumping. Hopefully these youngsters have some pop and can turn so heads.
December 6, 200520 yr Forget pitching prospect... Hopefully Cubs cave in and deal Pie. Pie plus Hermida in OF will bring me to ball park a few times...
December 6, 200520 yr Pie is neither ready or deserving to be on a major league roster yet. He has a lot to learn.
