i literally got just got out of bed when i saw this on ESPN2 bottomline to come see what people thought.

personally i dont think we were in such a horrible plight that we NEEDED to get Conine. i said earlier get him at a good price, but damn dont overpay. he already did this s*** with Urbina and now this. how bad will we be feeling this in the future? i want to win now, but i dont want to spend the next few years struggling to restock our farm system because of one playoff run.

Stupid!?!? flat out stupid move this guy really is something. Look I'm not so sad to see Levinski go some felt he is fraglie and had not recover from last season injury to his arm....BUT Bautista is a moronic move this guy was the second best pitcher at the futures game. I told you this guy set a standard for overpaying and everybody knows it. The ONLY way this move pays off is

1. if the Marlins make the playoff

2. They resign Burnett, Penny, and Beckett to give the young arms in lower A time to develop

remember Conine will NOW be the Marlins 1B next season

Like he had a choice Ed. The guy loses his all-star third baseman a day before the waiver trading deadline, the team he crafted is tied for the wildcard (after he was lambasted in the press unmercifully and unfairly for the moves he made) and every GM he speaks to knows he's lost Lowell - what the h*ll do you expect him to do?

Loria et al are trying to bring winning baseball to south florida. With next years season ticket sales and the chance of a new stadium hanging in the balance you think he overpaid. I say, like the $10 mil they gave Pudge, you do what you have to do if you want to win.

And winning is everything.

The fact that everyone is getting all concerned over the future is pretty ironic. HOw can you decry this move but approve of not moving Lowell, or signing all these one year deals in the face of pending FA or arbitration, etc. Those events are going to prove far more detrimental than signing Conine.

Besides, did you think that the Marlins would get someone for nothing, especially in late August?

personally i dont think we were in such a horrible plight that we NEEDED to get Conine

This hits the nail on the head. Conine isn't going to perform that much better than Hollandsworth or Banks would have. And we gave up our best pitching prospect to get him! This is such a horrible trade.

well to the AVG fan....

this is awesome news....

we are not the avg fans though

While I'm not very happy with this deal, I look at it like this:

1) Maybe this means we're keeping AJ.

2) Jeff Conine, my all-time favorite athlete (except Tmac and RW), is a Marlin.

3) Our rotation still has a bright future.

4) I'm tired of losing, I want to F*cking win now!

To give Beinfest credit, he knows a lot more about our prospects than we do. Maybe he knows what he's doing, or maybe I'm just pretending that I think he knows what he's doing.

Besides, did you think that the Marlins would get someone for nothing, especially in late August?

No but both Bautista and Levinski? Come on that is just crazy. Are we getting more than just Conine in this deal?

To think you could have gotten Matt Stairs, and yet you got Jeff Conine. If I were a Marlin fan I'd be disappointed right now.

somebody just had to be an idiot and ruin the excitement!! (sigh)

look at the stats buddy. i rather have conine!!!!

conine is more of a clutch hitter than stairs!!!

The Fish were a team tied for the WC without a starting LF. Did you think other FO's would feel sorry for them, roll over and die? Of course not, they gouged the Fish. But that's the price of doing business.

And we gave up our best pitching prospect to get him! This is such a horrible trade.

I'm sick of hearing of the Marlins' pitching prosects. You'll note that 60 percent of the starting rotation (including the top two P's) are from someone else's farm. Either they are consistently overrated prospects or the Fish cannot develop them effectively. Either way their only worth most times is as trade bait.

l

Admin Beinfest did when it was known that not only Bautista was dealt but also Levinksi.

the organization grew a set of balls.

i dont give a damn about who we gave up....the one thing this organization has is pitching prospects.

You betcha Das :thumbup :w00t :thumbup

I'd like to think that the Fish could get more than Jeff friggin Conine with the best pitcher in their entire farm system

You betcha Das :thumbup :w00t :thumbup If they kept Banks in and didn't do anything everyone would be b***hing about that instead of this.

I agree we couldn't get another player along with Conine?

If they kept Banks in and didn't do anything everyone would be b***hing about that instead of this.

Conine better hit .320 and smack 5-7 homers, or else there'll be a lot more to b*tch about.

people b*tch no matter what.

you have to give to get.

you basically give up bautista for conine.

is he the best pitching prospect??? maybe.

but with the emergence of allison...maybe not.

you have to give to get.

You don't have to give up the best pitcher in your farm system to get a 38-year-old hitter with an OPS under .800. At least, you don't if you're not a complete retard.

Das Texan is right the pitching prospects are there BUT what alot people are pissoff about is Bautista was "the next great arm" in the class of a Burnett, Penny and Beckett. He was already in AA but like I said "IF" they expect to resign those three or two out of three I'm all for this trade...bottomline

is bautista the best in the farm now?

especially with allison emerging?

I hope Bautista goes from 20 years of age to 24 tomorrow.

resign burnett, penny and beckett.....

where exactly do you put bautista?

question

is bautista the best in the farm now?

Yes. Look around the minors and see how many 21-year-olds you can find in AA. Then see how many of them have more K's than IP.

I'd like to think that the Fish could get more than Jeff friggin Conine with the best pitcher in their entire farm system

Oh, no!! Don't trade the best pitching prospect. That would be like trading Ryan Dempster before he came up (mediocre, on DL b/c arm fell off), or Burnett (was good, on DL b/c arm fell off), or Beckett (.500 pitcher with a 3rd of his career so far on DL).

Name one of the Fish's "top pitching prospects" in the last 4 years who actually lived up to half of the hype that the franchise forced down our throats. The Fish Farm system chews up top pitching prospects and spits out mediocre and injury prone rotation-fillers.

Dude Admin isnt going to bring back Burnett. It's very risky giving that guy some big bucks when he is coming off an injury. It could turn out to be great but it could also bite you in the butt.

Keep in mind that Torborg isn't around to kill them all. And Burnett isn't a dud, and Beckett is only 23 and still has a chance at having a long successful career, seeing as he's awesome when healthy.
