With Lowell Out, Marlins Land

Veteran Conine From Orioles

Baltimore Obtains Pair of Minor Leaguers

.c The Associated Press

MIAMI (Aug. 31) -- Jeff Conine was traded to the Florida Marlins from the Baltimore Orioles late Sunday night, just ahead of the midnight ET deadline for setting postseason rosters.

The Orioles sent Conine to the Marlins for 20-year-old right-handers Denny Bautista and Don Levinski. Conine, who can play the infield or outfield, was acquired to help offset the loss of All-Star third baseman Mike Lowell.

Lowell, the Marlins' leader with 32 homers and 105 RBI, was lost for at least the regular season after breaking his right hand Saturday night.

Conine, who played for the Marlins' 1997 World Series championship team, batted .290 with 15 home runs and 80 RBI this season with the Orioles.

Florida is tied with Philadelphia atop the NL wild-card standings. Players had to be on a team's roster by Aug. 31 in order to be eligible for the postseason.

The Orioles were on the way home from Seattle following a 10-game road trip when the deal was completed.

Its all about this year.

Next year or 2005 are a million years away. Bautista is a terrific prospect, but that's what he is - a prospect. The Marlins did absolutely the right thing considering the hand (no pun intended) they were dealt by the baseball gods, and even with a gun at their head, Beinfest wasn't afraid to make the deal. I say congrats!

its Bautista and Levinski

OK, that's it. Everyone take back your boo yeah right now.

P.s. Almonte must die

Probaly 1 or 2 years. Wow bad trade. Admin had such a great year as the GM then he blows it by giving up 2 of our top prospects for an old guy. I was thinking Like Blaine Neal and someone. Boy was I wrong :banghead

I didn't think it was possible to be any more idiotic when he traded Snare and Gonzalez and Smith for Urbina, but congrats, it's possible.

i feel like dying

omg

rip of the CENTIURY

THIS IS DISGUSTING

OMG

HORRIBLE

IMMA GO TAKE A WALK

OK, that's it. Everyone take back your boo yeah right now.

There are going to be a lot of mixed feeling tomorrow. I don't know whether I should be happy or sad right now. I hope someone got it wrong and it was Bautista or Levenski.

It's not the greatest deal to ever go down, but the mere fact that Beinfest is trying is so much of a significant departure from what has happened over the last few years that I'm tickled pink.

Still think I would of liked to see The Professional Hitter, instead. If for no other reason just so they could hold "white trash mullet night" at the pro.

And I say: why don't you die? AT LEAST one of the two stupid deal the Marlins did this year is going to be parallel to the Varitek, Smoltz, and Bagwell trades.

The Padres didn't give up much more to land Brian Giles! The Fish just gave up their #1 pitching prospect for a 38-year-old player, that's insane.

To the people who like this deal what are you going to say about it if we don't make the playoffs? It was worth the gamble kind of stuff? I am going to be pissed if this team can't make the playoffs because we are going to struggle in the next few years. This team won't get top FA and we are going to need cheap prospects to fill out our roster.

Calm down people. Think logically here. They know and we know that there may not be a chance of making the playoffs again for awhile. Bautista ain't gonna help us make it this year, Jeff should help. I am in favor of this deal STILL. It hurts our future potentially but lets do this thing this year. I applaud Beinfest.

Stupid!?!? flat out stupid move this guy really is something. Look I'm not so sad to see Levinski go some felt he is fraglie and had not recover from last season injury to his arm....BUT Bautista is a moronic move this guy was the second best pitcher at the futures game. I told you this guy set a standard for overpaying and everybody knows it. The ONLY way this move pays off is

1. if the Marlins make the playoff

2. They resign Burnett, Penny, and Beckett to give the young arms in lower A time to develop

remember Conine will NOW be the Marlins 1B next season

And I say: why don't you die?

There is absolutely no need for that sort of comment.

speechless

but i want to win now....

we are pretty deep in pitching anyway(if you cant majors)

and miggy taxi cab, wtf is up your butt?

im usually an optimist for the Marlins...I didnt complain when we gave up Adrian Gonzalez....but this is horrible.

It would have been bad to give up Bautista and some scrub prospect. But, to give up both Bautista and Levinski? brutal.

If you look at all the moves (and non-moves) the Fish made this year the deal for Conine is hardly the worst example of them mortgaging their future. As a matter of fact, tt's become pretty evident that the Fish are selling their soul for a run this year. BUt hey, what do they have to lose? At some point they have to do something instead of being happy to just exist in the SoFLa market.

Only one way to know. Cavity Check?

well to the AVG fan....

this is awesome news....

we are not the avg fans though

I'm not sure about the trade, based on what I know now.

But what will you say, in a few years, if Bautista and Levinski don't turn out to be the pitchers that you anticipate them to be. They may be irreplaceable, but does anyone know that for sure?

Seriously did someone get this wrong? Could it be Bautista or Levenski?

Admin, look at what the Royals GM (one of the stupidest GMs in baseball) gave up for Rondell White. Then tell me what you think about this trade.
