February 12, 200620 yr When asked about signing Willis and Cabrera long term (actually the question was about buying out their arbitration years) Samson conferred with Beinfest for a second and reiterated the Marlins position is unchanged since 2002, they don't believe in doing so and want to pay for performance even if in the longrun it costs a few more dollars. :banghead :banghead :banghead :banghead :banghead This drives me INSANE. I wonder what the Marlins thinks every time Rich Harden (5/$16), Victor Martinez (5/$15), Dan Haren (5/$19.5), and Jason Bay (4/$18.25) sign deals after there first season or two. Dontrelle is a little special because he got super 2, but assuming he has $8-10-12 the next 3 seasons in arbitration (very fair figures), Dontrelle's 6 years for the Marlins are going to cost about 6/$35. Assuming Cabrera gets Teixeira money, he will cost around $6.5-$9-$11 the next 3 seasons... making him 6/$28. If the Marlins are so worried about money, why don't they lock up their top young players who are flat out awesome for years and save literally $8+ million over a 3 or 4 year span. (and we wonder why we never have a bullpen). I guess with all the rookies the Marlins will have making the minimum the next 3 seasons, Cabrera and Dontrelle aren't necessarily going to hurt them going year-year, but when is saving money ever a bad thing? I'm not advocating giving deals to all the young guys we have. I would say Hermida is the only no brainer because he's going to be a superstar. But if someone else like Jacobs, or Willingham, or Hanley, or Petit, really comes in and is dominant with no good reason why they will regress, they should most certainly buy out their arbitration. It's just a smart cap practice. And for a cost conscious franchise, one that just makes sense.

February 12, 200620 yr I suspect it's the precedent they set by doing it for one (or two) players. By having a unform policy they aren't caught between a rock and hard place with every agent demanding they do the same for his client as they did for some other guy, and if they don't, creating ill-will and strained relations.
February 12, 200620 yr I think Cubs fans would trade places with us any day of the week. And Giants fans. And Indians fans. And Pirates fans... Only for the Marlins past.....not the future. A future that at worst will mimick the past: many sub-par seasons ending in a chamopionship, all while operating on the scant revenues provided by Dolphins Stadium.

Additionally, arbitration is so biased towards rewarding a player for the most minimal accomplishment, as little as simply completing a year of service time, that you're really not paying for performance. You're performing for every single little thing and then some. And then Marlins add a bit more because they always settle before the arbitrator can make his decision. Lock them in at today's rates, because that price is going to increase whether they've had an All-Star year or having a slightly below-average year. The only way you save money is if a player gets injured, and in that case you're already payng him for his missed time and medical bills.

Who cares. I don't see Joe Blanton, Nick Swisher, Hutson Street, and Dan Johnson crying because Harden, Haren, and Crosby have bought out deals. They are all going to get paid if they continue being awesome. Some just sooner rather then later.
February 12, 200620 yr Where it would help the Marlins most to have signed Cabrera and Willis is when they are free-agents and remember how little they were paid when they put up the numbers. I don't see either of them as Marlins after they are eligible for free-agency......and maybe sooner if the arbitration numbers get too high.
February 12, 200620 yr When it boils down to it I largely agree and sympathize with the FO, I really do, but they seem to take their frustration with South Florida at large out on us, the Marlins' loyal fans. Samson is just touting the corportate line and it's pretty reasonable in alot of ways but how he delivers this message is really condescending and irritating. I understand that he is a fall guy, his job is to absorb and deflect all the criticism away from Loria, but what I don't understand is why he is such a tremedous dick. I'm by and large a happy-go-lucky guy but I can't help but feel compelled to physically hurt this person.
February 13, 200620 yr Samson would be best served to sit in his office and keep his pie-hole shut. pot... kettle...
February 13, 200620 yr I would have punched him in the face like- POW right in the kisser! Pow! right in the kisser! POW right in the kisser! Pow! right in the kisser! POW right in the kisser! I think that you'd have a better shot at his chin by trying to knee him in the jaw. After all, his height ends at most of our mid-sections.

February 13, 200620 yr :hat i sat at the town meeting.i was there and like it or not, samson was right.samson mentioned that the redsox only have 3 players left from their 2004 championship team. Samson was wrong... Ortiz, Ramirez, Schilling, Foulke, Varitek, Arroyo, Timlin, Nixon, Wakefield, Youkilis are still on left from the Redsox 2004 championship team. LOL! I wish Samson would stop comparing this firesale to the turnover that teams typically go through. Firesales are not normal.
