February 28, 200620 yr But, in matters of taste it's hard to make everyone happy. Perhaps there's a way to actively vote in movies. Like, take a category like action flicks, put ten in and see which ones win. Something similar might not be a bad idea - listing genres and then picking the ten essential movies in each. Only drawback with that I believe is that some genres might have movies that need to be listed left off, while others could very well see movies that sneak in by genre but wouldn't make, say, a Top 100 list.
February 28, 200620 yr A few worth discussion: A Clockwork Orange, The Great Escape, and Stand By Me.

I think we should try a list. I'm not sure how many these polls hold, but let's have some nominations and go with it. We can get by with this for a few months before we're even finished and by then it should be "definitive." Plus, I think you could do: Action, Drama, Comedy, Documentary and then a Second Chance for movies that should have made it but didn't. I don't know, it's an idea.

February 28, 200620 yr We could have a nomination thread first. Each person is allowed to nominate only 5 movies in each category. Based on the outcome of that thread - you will notice that certain movies are nominated by all or most posters. Only movies receiving multiple nominations [maybe it will be 5 nominations - maybe it will be 10 nominations] - in other words, the top vote getters - make it on the ballott.
February 28, 200620 yr Good list Juanky although I disagree with Devil's Advocate, which I thought was average at best. I'd also like to throw in: Glory Shine Empire of the Sun 12 Angry Men
February 28, 200620 yr Crash... Mainly for its emphasis on discrimination and what not. going to watch that tonight
February 28, 200620 yr Good list Juanky although I disagree with Devil's Advocate, which I thought was average at best. 12 Angry Men :thumbup ...i meant to add this movie to my list too
February 28, 200620 yr Crash... Mainly for its emphasis on discrimination and what not. going to watch that tonight It's a good movie - but not a MUST SEE. I would pick Boyz n the Hood for a race movie before Crash. THAT is a good movie.

I'll see what I can come up with, in the mean time people can feel free to keep adding names up for consideration.
March 1, 200620 yr CITY OF GOD(BRAZILIAN FILM) FYI - awesome call. This is CLEARLY the call of someone who has seen some cinema. I can't add it to the MUST SEE list, but this is DEFINATELY something every SHOULD see. If you get a chance to check out this movie. Do it. I know that reading subtitles can suck, but you forget that you are reading them with this movie. It's a movie about growing up in the projects of Rio de Janeiro and the CRAZY stuff these kids have to deal with and the choices they make. Of course, it eventually focuses on drugs with a maffiaesque/godfather feel to it. Check out a better description here: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0317248/ Peace.
March 11, 200620 yr I figured I'd bump this up to maybe get a few more titles mentioned before we actually started the nomination process.
March 13, 200620 yr Here's my list: Patton (Amazing performance by George C. Scott) Annie Hall (Woody Allen) Adaptation (Charlie Kaufman) Magnolia (P.T. Anderson) Reservoir Dogs (Quentin Tarantino) Big Lebowski (Coen Brothers) Royal Tenenbaums (Wes Anderson) City of God (Incredible cinematography) Godfather (Francis Ford Coppola) The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly (Sergio Leone) Shoot the Piano Player (Francois Truffaut) Dr. Strangelove (Stanley Kubrick) Citizen Kane (Orson Welles) 12 Angry Men (Sidney Lumet) Mr. Smith Goes to Washington (Frank Capra) 8 1/2 (Fellini) The Seventh Seal (Ingmar Bergman) Rashomon (Akira Kurosawa) Raging Bull (Martin Scorcese) Rear Window (Hitchcock) For the most part, I tried to think of amazingly talented directors (or screenwriter in Kaufman's case) and select my personal favorite from thier body of work. Some directors have multiple classics, but I limited myself to just one for this list.
March 13, 200620 yr A few worth discussion: A Clockwork Orange I had to watch that movie for my Psychology class-- didn't really like it.

I would pick Boyz n the Hood for a race movie before Crash. THAT is a good movie. Not for me. Boyz n the Hood was a good movie, but Crash was better IMO. On a side note, we are watching Indiana Jones and the Raiders of the Lost Ark for my Film class tonight. It's the first time I'm looking forward to going...

March 14, 200620 yr Life is Beautiful (Benigni) A few worth discussion: A Clockwork Orange No time for the old in and out chap, just came to check the metar!
March 14, 200620 yr Life is Beautiful (Benigni) I'll forever hate that movie for robbing Edward Norton of a Best Actor Academy Award win (Ian McKellen and Tom Hanks arguably as well). Plus, he had such a lame reaction to winning.

BTW, since this week is such a crazy sports week (WBC, March Madness, more WBC plus regular season basketball and hockey) I'm going to hold off on the beginning of the list making process until next week. Annie Hall, Run Lola Run, Adaptation....and the rest were just clips from movies during different periods (a lot of Hitchcock)
March 15, 200620 yr Lost Boys Bullit , (great scene with Ford Mustang) Steve McQueen That '68 Charger was THE reason to watch Bullit. Period.
