Mitre "good bet" to start game 2 of 2006

Sergio Mitre - S - Marlins

Sergio Mitre appears to be in line to start the second game of the season for the Marlins.

"It's a pretty good bet," manager Joe Girardi said. If Mitre's in, then Scott Olsen, Josh Johnson and Ricky Nolasco are competing for one rotation spot. It's expected to be Olsen's job. Mar. 28 - 7:45 pm et

Sure looks true.. Mitre will get the ball

Is Mitre the No. 2 starter? Manager Joe Girardi has yet to reveal if the Marlins will open the season with a four- or five-man rotation. But the first-year skipper tipped his hand as to which starter will take the mound in the second game of the season, next Tuesday at Houston.

Sergio Mitre is in line to pitch the second game. Andy Pettitte is slotted to throw for the Astros.

The Marlins begin their 14th big-league season on Monday, with Dontrelle Willis making his first Opening Day start. Houston is going with Roy Oswalt.

The third game of that series will likely match pitchers Brian Moehler and Brandon Backe.

Mitre will pitch Thursday's Grapefruit League game against the Orioles.

Asked if Mitre would be the starter in the second game, Girardi said: "It's a pretty good bet."

Hopefully Girardi does go the route of the flex starter, with Moehler filling that capacity and Olsen making the rotation along with Johnson. Nolasco might not be a bad option to start the year in the bullpen.

Well, at least Moehler's been somewhat demoted.

I don't think we should judge Moe too harshly on a few spring training innings.

He hasn't just been bad, he's been downright awful. A similarly putrid performance has pretty much assured Messenger of starting the year in AAA.

He's given up as many runs as Vargas and Olsen combined and he needs to thank his lucky stars that we acquired Wellemeyer today, otherwise he'd have the highest ERA on the team and the second highest WHIP behind only Messenger.

When guys are "battling" for a spot in the rotation and actually putting up numbers (Olsen, Johnson, Nolasco) yet being denied for a guy with an ERA over 6 who couldn't do anything in the second half last year, it makes you wonder...

He's thrown the ball well enough to get the nod I suppose.

Although both Johnson and Olsen have been better.

Disappointing, but I had a feeling something like this would happen when Girardi put JJ into the game in the ninth a couple days ago. My guess is Olsen will get the 5th spot.

Moehler has 1.1 bad innings

god this rotation looks meek outside of Dontrelle

These comments make me think you would've also released Ryan Church for poor spring numbers. and, Ramp is right, Moe pitched very well except a minor blip.

Vargas? Olsen?

What if we made the playoffs and won the World Series.

Market correction.
