When the Marlins face the Rockies on Saturday night, they will look to do a better job of putting the ball in play.

 

High strikeout totals are hurting the Marlins, who fanned 14 times in Friday's 3-2 loss in 10 innings. Florida has struck out 115 times in its last 12 games.

 

Rockies right-hander Josh Fogg gets the start Saturday. While not necessarily a high strikeout pitcher, Fogg has fanned 11 in 22 2/3 innings this season. He is 4-2 in seven career starts against the Marlins.

 

The Marlins are going with left-hander Jason Vargas, who faces the Rockies for the first time in his career. Vargas' lone win this season was at home, and he is 4-3 for his career with a 3.50 ERA at Dolphin Stadium.

FLA: LHP Jason Vargas (1-1, 5.06 ERA)

With any luck, Vargas would have notched his second win in his last start. In a brilliant 6 1/3-innings performance at Chicago, the left-hander gave up no runs and only one hit. Despite walking four, Vargas was effective. Three of his four starts have been on the road. His lone home start was his victory, when he beat the Padres on April 13. He yielded two runs in six innings that day.

 

COL: RHP Josh Fogg (2-1, 4.76 ERA)

Fogg lost his first game of the season in his last start, going five innings and surrendering six runs, five earned, in a 6-5 setback against Philadelphia. Fogg gave up eight hits, including three doubles to the Phillies. But he has strong numbers against the Marlins, with a career 3-1 mark and a 2.40 ERA.

 

Player to watch

Rockies infielder Jamey Carroll has traditionally produced against the Marlins. For his career, he is batting .313 vs. Florida (47-for-150), including a 1-for-3 performance with a double and a run scored on Friday.
