Jury Duty...Anyone Had It?

Featured Replies

I've had an interesting experience with jury duty this week. I got a letter in the mail saying that i was going to be on call for jury duty from May 1st to the 11th. They make you call every day to check and see if you need to go in the next day or not. I was chosen to go in on Wednesday. It took basically all day, but I was finally in a jury selection pool by 2:30 PM or so, after arriving at 8:15 AM. I was not actually selected for this case, which was a civil one.

So, I left Wednesday afternoon pretty sure I wouldn't have to go in again, since I had been called.

I was wrong.

I woke up this morning and found out that I had to go in again, because they had an emergency situation or something. Thankfully I could get there at 12:30 this time. I didn't have to wait very long before i was in a small jury pool of 12 people or so for a criminal case this time. After about two hours of interviews, they selected the jury, and I was not one of them.

Hopefully, I have served my time enough now. However, I still have to call every day to make sure that I don't need to go back, until next Thurs.

Anyone else been to jury duty before? I was surprised to get called, since I'm only 20, and have only voted once in an election. Both days I was by far the youngest person in the courtroom. I had to serve at Federal District Court in Downtown Miami.

Yes I was called for jury duty when I was 20 also. I went there watched "My Big Fat Greek Wedding", "Maid in Manhatten" and some other crap movies. Then they called my number and a bunch of others and they said we can either stay or go home. I elected to go home.

I had jury duty for 2 weeks last year. Served on a civil case.

Spent most of the time in the jury pool room bored out of my mind.

Haven't been called yet. They better not call me, I'm way too busy at this point in my life.

I was called about 2 years ago and I was just recently called for a 2 week "stand by" period similar to what you had starting on May 30th.

I was called a couple of months ago. Best new excuse to get out of it is to tell he judge you have a vacation planned for the same week of the trial. That got me off the hook in 2 seconds.

I just went on Monday. I was sitting there all day until 2:00 when they finally came and excused everyone because of cancellations. The only ones who had to stay were some people chosen for a previous jury pool that was called.

Nope, and good luck trying to find me considering I'm registered to vote in Rhode Island and won't be back there for a few months. One of my friends here actually did get selected even though he was in school, so he didn't have to think too long to find a reason why he couldn't go. :p

They no longer go by voter registration in Florida (at least South Florida,) they now use drivers licenses.

I've been called several times. For civil cases, it's just a matter of whether or not they pick me the first day. For the criminal cases, they keep getting rid of me...my brother-in-law hired a lot of the senior members of the State Attorney's office, he used to be the senior assistant in charge of special prosecutions back in the 70's and early 80's.

Approximately 300,000 citizens in Miami-Dade County are randomly selected by a computer each year to be summoned to jury duty for the Eleventh Judicial Circuit of Florida. Summonses are mailed to citizens who possess a valid driver's license or identification card issued by the Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles.

This has been in effect for approx 10 years now.

I'm short of my 20th birthday and got called for jury duty, served it third week of March. Got picked for a case but then was one of the alternates :confused

Cant you get excused if you are a full time student in Florida kiddos?

The Florida jury process sounds as simplistic as their voting system.

Here in Texas, you get called for just one day. I have been called twice. Both times I was excused for being a full time student.

Unfortunately my college semester ended the Friday before I had jury duty, so I couldn't really use that as an excuse.

my mom got a notice in the mail the other day, its her 2nd time in the last year i think. i dont know how many times overall she's gotten called. i on hte other hand still aint been called thankfully. im 22.

Nope, it just gets delayed until you are free.

Yea, that's what happened to me. They sent me a letter for April 10, but I had class that day. So, I sent them the letter back saying I am a full time student and that I would be free May 1st.

Yeah I got the call earlier this year but delayed it to the summer b/c i have to be in school

Hopefully I can delay it until after August when i wont be living here
