June 16, 200620 yr Like I said, there are more intelligent and persuasive ways to make your point, that's just my two cents.
June 16, 200620 yr Ok, good. I don't think he, or anyone else, has the right to protest soldier's or anyone's private funerals in public.
June 16, 200620 yr Ok, good. I don't think he, or anyone else, has the right to protest soldier's or anyone's private funerals in public. Yeah, in some sense. I can think of instances where it COULD be okay to protest a soldier's funeral, but I agree with you. Phelps sucks.
June 16, 200620 yr Here is the thing...people really don't do it. Maybe Im missing something, but when was the last time we saw someone getting on the news for burning a flag? So why are they bringing this up again? Politics. Goes to show how much they really respect the flag. And yes, flag burning, even if wrong, can be extremely symbolic. Even though things arent terrible today, they could be. And when they are, it can show that our nation is of the people and not of the government policy. It is very similiar to destroying Parliament in V for Vendetta.
June 16, 200620 yr Doesn't mean it should be illegal. I think people over 70 and most females shouldn't drive. People still think that no one but white people are real human beings. Some believe that drinking alcohol at any point is wrong. Even others believe that you should chop theives' hands off. Doesn't mean any of those should be laws. Juanky, I didnt say it should be illegal. But you said it was no big deal. I think its a big deal. We'll agree to disagree.Ah, ok. I misunderstood your post. It's not that I like flag burning or think it's right, but I honestly have more of a problem with people who wear it around as bathing suits. At least the ones burning it (generally) have a point.
June 16, 200620 yr I agree with the above sentiment. I find it just as disrespectful those who wear it as a bandanna, shirt, or other article of clothing. People that don't bring their flag in during bad weather annoy me as well.
June 16, 200620 yr Yeah, I believe there's a proviso of what you can and can't do with the flag and wearing it is one of them (including on athletic uniforms).
June 16, 200620 yr You are correct, and I didn't know that: No part of the flag should ever be used as a costume or athletic uniform. However, a flag patch may be affixed to the uniform of military personnel, firemen, policemen, and members of patriotic organizations. The flag represents a living country and is itself considered a living thing. Therefore, the lapel flag pin being a replica, should be worn on the left lapel near the heart. But wasn't a special decision and permission granted to the NCAA and other sports bodies to use it post-9/11? Link To The Federal Flag Code
June 16, 200620 yr Lame. I love how they even given reccomendations on how pins should be warn. This should be open and shut. It's political speech which is protected, and the government has much better things to do than regulate what their citizens express and how they do it.
June 16, 200620 yr It has to be allowed as freedom of expression, but if you burn a flag or cheer when something else burns the flag for protests, you are a douche.

It's political speech which is protected, and the government has much better things to do than regulate what their citizens express and how they do it. It's not regulations forced by law they are just guidelines on how to respect and use the flag. I'm glad that we have them even though they are generally ignored.
June 16, 200620 yr Yeah, I know. I just find it kind of funny we need to tie that in when we make burning the flag illegal. Gave me a chuckle.
June 16, 200620 yr And yes, flag burning, even if wrong, can be extremely symbolic. Even though things arent terrible today, they could be. And when they are, it can show that our nation is of the people and not of the government policy. Good point. Of the people, by the people.
June 17, 200620 yr Flag burning should be protected. It's an extension of freedom of speech and is an effective means of expressing discontent. J.S. Mill says it best: "If the opinion is right, they are deprived of the opportunity of exchanging error for truth; if wrong, they lose, what is almost as great a benefit, the clearer perception and livelier impression of truth produced by its collision with error." I never have a problem with flag burning for the above mentioned reason. I think flag burning is wrong when young men are dying for our country and our freedoms. I DONT think it should be illegal. Well, the flag is a representative symbol. It doesn't mean sh*t when our government is being evil, doing illegal things or being lame. That being said, when people feel like our government sucks (for any of the above-mentioned reasons), it should be there for their use, to burn as a demonstration of their unhappiness with said government. Now, for every Fred Phelps who's writing on it with bloody "God hates fags" lettering and protesting soldiers funerals, you potentially have someone legitimately burning it (let's say the hippies burning it during the Vietnam military action; I think that's a good enough reason). To be honest, I don't want to take away Fred Phelps right to burn it for retarded reasons anymore than I want to take away the person who has legit beef. Plus, there's some sense of education that comes from seeing that image of Phelps doing his protest badly or wrongly, and someone who really has a message and really stands for something doing it, in some sense, rightly or, let's say, for the right reason. There is no literal connection, in my mind, between the flag and soldiers dying. Okay, when they bury soldiers or bring back our dead they wrap the coffin in a flag. But, while the flag might represent those soldiers deaths or any number of crazy things you can name (because let's be honest, no flag represents the same exact things to the same people; except, in some sense, it always seems to stand for America in general), it's definitely in their spirit, that protest lives. They just as much "died" for our right to speak freely and protest how we want to protest as much as for some flag. The flag is, in my mind, the physical and iconic representation of America; under which falls all things, be it the image of American soldiers raising it on the Iwo Jima sands, or the Abu Ghraib prison torture scenes. And I want to say there are instances where people who have been wronged, or believe our government is wrong, have enough reason to burn the flag as a sign of protest. Just a few weeks ago you were spewing about how the flag means nothing and it's just a "stupid piece of cloth." So why burn the flag? It just doesn't seem like the way to get across an opinion would be to burn a flag to protest the government when they allow that. 'Man I hate these taxes, let me go take out a flag.' It's a pretty strong image when done right. No, it's not. There is never an appropriate time to burn the flag, not during Vietnam, not now, not ever. The only reaction it gets is utter disgust and completely discredits and devalues any point you're trying to make, and absolutely NO ONE aside from your own ilk will take you seriously. I can think of instances where it COULD be okay to protest a soldier's funeral  :plain
June 19, 200620 yr Flag burning has to this point been protected by the 1st amendment, however if a new amendment is ratified, then the 1st amendment will no longer apply to flag burning and the new amendment will. The constitution cannot be unconstitutional. Anyway, as for now it should be banned, although i must say its been so overused lately that whatever meaning it once had it has long since lost. People have becomed so desensitized by it that it no longer serves the shock value that protestors intend it to
June 20, 200620 yr Like abortion, most people are against it, but they think it should remain legal. Why can't we maintain the status quo when nobody is particularly bothered by it? obviously because slimy politicians need something to hold up & say "see what I did??!! I love my country!! Vote for me again!""
June 20, 200620 yr I was disgusted as well watching video of those people protesting soldiers' funerals because they were anti-gay. It didn't make much sense, especially when those particular soldiers that died were not gay. However, flag burning has been supported as freedom of expression by the courts, and it should stay that way. Do I agree with it? No. Do I like to see it? Hell no. But I will support the right of those few people who want to do it.

Where someone can protest is something the government has control over (whether correctly or incorrectly so)

June 20, 200620 yr f*** it, its illegal to knock mailboxes off with bats, and its illegal to deface money. It is illegal to decafe public property. If you burn the flag, it should be a federal offense. If you don't like the US, do something productive, burning the flag is goddamn stupid, and disrespectful to the men and women who have died defending it and everyone else. f*** the motherf***ers who burn the flag, and f*** you if you believe that thats ok. Disrepecting the acting president, and calling him dumb or incompetant, is one thing, because its true in your eyes. But f*** it, I'm kinda drunk.

The main diference IMO is as long as you own the flag youre burning, youre not doing anything illegal.

Burning the flag is no detriment to those who have died. Come on, let's all grow up here. They didn't die "for" the flag. To disallow people to burn flags is to spit in the face of the same spirit of protest that started with the fathers of the Revolution.
