These guy can't last pass the 6th inning. Last year if you look most of his break down or big innings came between the 4th and 6th innings. He wears out and in the summer heat down here. He won't make it. I think the Marlins know these, and could be why his name was out there this past winter.

I would hope that in the season Jeff Torborg would know to pull Brad out after 5 or 6 innings if this continues. They are probably keeping him in so they can extend his effectiveness. At least it is still Spring Training - this is the time to experiment, not later. There is an article on MLB's site about developing a "formula" like the Braves and Yankees have so starters don't get worn out, and the bullpen has specific jobs. I don't know that it will work for us, but I guess it is worth a try.

Wait a minute...you know why he didnt have good conditioning last year? Because he had the Flue and couldnt pitch in ST. This year you should see how his legs got bigger and he is working hard. He wont have a break through season but i can bet you he wil pitch good for us...

Not only did he have the flu last year during spring training, but then they let him go out and pitch 9 innings against montreal because he had a shut out going. Torberg stated this year how weak Penny was, what were they thinking? I think that probably had something to do with his stint on the dl.

We rush ballplayers, especially pitchers. In a more perfect world, Beckett and Penny would be in our bullpen learning their trade from more mature Glavine-like arms. AJ, well AJ's stuff is so fabulous he'd always find a way into a starting slot, but the other two guys careers may ultimately be shortened because they didn't spend enough time in the minors.

 

Every time I look at Beckett I think of David Clyde.

I agree.. most of these young pitcher are being rushed to the Majors and I think that's a huge mistake. But you also got to look at it from another angle. Most teams are trying to cut salary these days and prefer to have cheap talent instead of an expensive old veteran.

 

Plus, the bigger the contracts get, the more young talent you'll see in the majors (unless your the Yankees).. it's purely business.

I think we are abusing these young arms - especially Burnett - the number of pitches he threw last year was ridiculous! Beckett should still probably be in the minors or the pen in a perfect world, but now he is the opening day starter because of injuries. I think we will see Dontrelle soon. I saw an article where the front office was talking about how he could be ready this season and and for sure for 2004. I wish he would stay down in the minors though.

Mark Prior can be a guy that can throw 120+ pitches consistently....his mechanics are that damn good.

 

 

It all comes down to mechanics. If you have a 'weird' hitch...chances are you will not be able to endure high pitch counts.

 

 

I still maintain that you can 'condition' yourself to pitch well over 120 pitches on a consistent basis.

 

 

But in today's world....people dont have the 'balls' to do so.

The black uniforms are like the second alternate home uniforms and the alternate road uniforms. And they wore them all spring training, when it was pretty scorching down here, so it must not be that big of a problem. I doubt they would wear them for afternoon games, anyways.

the black uniforms in my view is the attempt to get rid of any sembalance of what this team's 'legacy' or 'history' has been.

 

 

i am just waiting for the time when they paint the outfield wall some other color than teal. that would just about seal it.

Black's just the latest trendy color to go with. Houston has it, the Mets have it, even Milwaukee has a black uniform I think. Can't say I'm a big fan of it, makes every team look the same. I wouldn't recommend going back to the original teal uniforms the first Marlins teams wore, but I'm sure someone could come up with a nice looking jersey with some teal in it...

I didnt want to trade Penny for Colon or prospects.

i agree with you that his conditioning isn't quite good enough, though a lot of this also has to do with inefficient use of his pitches.

 

these days one of the most underrated stats for SPs is innings pitched per game start. considering our bullpen woes, penny could make himself much more valuable if he learns to use his pitches more efficiently while working on his ability to go deep.

 

i still think this will be a "breakout" year of sorts in terms of numbers for a guy with a career ERA+ of 99. he's been pitching undeniably well... even at 6-7 innings per start, he's much better than he ever has been.
