Austin Kearns and Felipe Lopez Traded to Nationals

Featured Replies

Worst possible news for my fantasy team.. Kearns and Lopez to RFK. That's freakin awesome.

that's what they said about Soriano too :D

Wonder if this makes the Cardinals and Astros make any more moves? The Reds did potentially take care of thier BP problems(BP can be so fickle), for which Wayne deserves some dap. But also moved to early.

Now, will the Astros and Cardinals see this as a chance to go for the jugular and attempt to put the Reds away with a big move or two for each team?

Weird trade. I am guessing Kearns coming means Soriano will indeed be traded then. I guess Felipe is supposed to be the knew leadoff man. Nats really did rape in this trade, they have a stacked pen and to give up a MR like Majewski did not hurt at all. I like Majewski, he tends to runners on base but can clean up his own messes too.

Not sure about this deal.... Not to burst your bubble or anything Felo but Gary Majewski in my opinion BLOWS!

I guess we will see how this deal works....

a career 3.27era in the majors in over 160 innings?

terrible.

He is going to look like Rivera in our bullpen compare to what we had.

Very True... I guess he would blow on a team that had a very good bullpen... He pitches better when the lead is secure, chokes in close games..

For what it's worth, the Reds got Washington's 5th, 6th, and 7th rated prospects in this deal.

Why does everyone think Soriano will be traded? Im not so sure about that.

Why would they hang on to him?

They have an extremely outside chance at the playoffs even if they keep Soriano and probably a 0% chance at re-signing him after the season. Teams like the Angels are going to be desperate to pick up a guy like Soriano and will probably pay a ridiculous price for him. In the long run that is better for the Nationals than getting nothing for him when playoff chances are so slim.

I think it's more than 0% chance that they re-sign him. The Nats won't move him anyway until late in the month, just to see if they can get within 3-4 games heading into August

probably the worst trade i've seen since the kazmir-for-zambrano trade. one of the better SS's in the NL and a RF on pace for about 30 HR for a solid middle reliever (Majewski), a fill in short stop and three what-ifs? :banghead

where were the fish for Kearns? man would he have looked good in our lineup.

It's no more than a 5% chance. Remember not only do the Nats have to make him an initial offer in December that will definetly be below what he eventually he gets and potentially insulting, they and Soriano then have to sign a deal by mid January for him to be able to suit up for the Nats by May 1st. Might I remind you that mid January is simply the mid-point of free agency. That would be 4+ weeks of bidding wars they'd be calling off to re-sign to a team that likely won't compete and will want him to stay in the OF.

That's not going to happen.

BTW, Bray's a LOOGY and Majewski is a solid set-up man. Still never trade a premium for relief pitching. It's not likely to hold up when placed under new conditions.

I trust Wayne. He raped the Indians, Red Sox, and Padres. Hopefully he knows more then we do.

You did not 'rape' the Red Sox.

I'm glad trades involving 24 year old players are now judged by half a season.

I'd do that trade 47 times over no matter what Pena ends up doing.

We got an ace pitcher for an outfielder we didn't need.

Just because it helps/works out for the Reds doesn't mean you 'raped' the Red Sox.

Good point.

Lets just say that it was a good trade for us.

Wanna know why we did this trade?

No, we know why. Your general manager was under too much pressure to make a move, so in an attempt to do so, he flushed all of his positive credibility down the toilet.

Kudos, Krivsky! You assembled a team with a half-decent shot at contention, but then blew it all to hell with a ridiculous July deal. I'd be lying if I said I thought the Reds had a real shot at the playoffs before the trade, though.

I dont think it hurt the Reds that much at all.... my problem with the whole trade is that I thought they could have gotten more

that being said, I agree with your last part. I just dont take them seriously at this point.... SHOW ME SOMETHING! lol

Pitching and hitting are nowhere near equal value. To get good pitching, you are going to have to give up better hitting. It is basiclaly that simple. Krivsky dealt his best strength (hitting) to try to fix his biggest weakness (bullpen and defense).

It's not as if Kearns and FeLo are sure things. Lopez is a bad defender who is OPSing and a pedestrian .749, and can't hit lefties. Before last year he had never hit above .260 in a season. Kearns has never played an entire, healthy season in his career. Before this year the most games he had played was 112 in his 5 year career. He had already grounded into 14 DPs this year, and struck out 85 times. Kearns was a power hitter who strikes out alot, and we have an abundance of those. Freel/Denorfia will be more of contact/SB guys, which is something we didn't have.

With Castro/Clayton at SS, it will allow us to mask Edwin's shortcomings there right now. Edwin has all the tools to be a very good defensive 3rd base (very good range and arm), but he struggles with throwing accuracy. This team was not going to make the playoffs with that bad of a defensive left side of the field (if you include Dunn), but now with Castro and Clayton at SS, it improves you defense drastically. Edwin, at age 23, was already a better hitter then Lopez, and he could devolp into a good defensive 3rd baseman. Lopez isn't going to improve on defense. In the end, I think Wayne was almost forced to move either Lopez or Edwin, and moving Lopez was definately the right move.

In return we are getting 2 solid and young relievers. Ramirez, Arroyo, Harang, and at some points Milton have been very solid in our rotation this year. If they can just go 6-7 innings, you can get the ball to Bray/Majewski/Guardado, and you have a good shot at winning. Lately the bullpen couldn't get anybody out. There was not 1 pitcher you can rely on to come in and get outs consitently. Something had to be done, and Wayne did it.

When it comes down to it, the last 6 years the Reds have been trying to win with offense, and it has failed miserably. We needed to improve the pitching staff, and Wayne has done it. Our offense isn't going to suffer much at all, and the bullpen just got twice as good.

Not to mention we got 2 of their better prospects in Harris and Thompson.

Face it, Bowden did you raw. Majewski and Bray will help your bullpen and Clayton will help your defense. But if Kearns stays healthy and Lopez reverts to what he did last year.....this is a horrible trade for the Reds.
