Until the bottom of the eighth inning Wednesday night, the Marlins were primed to take their first three-game series at Turner Field since Sept. 20-22, 2002.

The Braves foiled that with a late rally, tripping up Florida, 6-5, to even the series.

 

In a quick turnaround game, the Marlins still have a chance to win the series Thursday afternoon.

 

In the series finale, rookie Scott Olsen goes for his ninth win. The 22-year-old left-hander is on a roll. Since May, he is 5-1 with a 2.53 ERA in nine starts, giving up 16 earned runs in 57 innings, along with 57 strikeouts.

 

When his slider is on, he is especially effective. In his last start, he struck out a personal-high 11, which also is tops by a Marlins starter this season.

 

On the road, Olsen is 4-1 with a 4.31 ERA this season. In the day time, he's been less effective, carrying a 2-2 record with a 6.94 ERA.

 

The Braves are going with rookie Jason Shiell, who makes his second start of the season. The right-hander gave up four runs in four innings in a loss at St. Louis on July 19.

 

Pitching matchup

FLA: LHP Scott Olsen (8-4, 4.01 ERA)

Olsen set a personal best with 11 strikeouts in his previous start, a win over the Pirates. The only rookie in Marlins history to fan more in a game was Josh Beckett (12) in 2002 against the Montreal Expos. Olsen tossed 114 pitches, one shy of his season high. A winner of two straight starts, Olsen has given up three earned runs (four total) in those games. Olsen has faced the Braves once, and it didn't go well, as he allowed eight runs in 4 2/3 innings.

 

ATL: RHP Jason Shiell (0-1, 9.00 ERA)

While making his first Major League start on Wednesday, Shiell allowed four earned runs in four innings against the Cardinals. The 29-year-old right-hander, who missed all of the 2004 and 2005 seasons because of arm problems, allowed each of his runs during the third inning, which included a Jim Edmonds three-run homer. He began this season pitching in an independent league and was signed by the Braves on June 22.

 

Player to watch

Andruw Jones has been bothered by a sore back, but that didn't prevent the Braves slugger from hitting the game-tying home run in the eighth inning Wednesday. Jones has 25 home runs and 89 RBIs this season.
