I thought that was what was going to bring Damon down at the end.. but I do wish they would have revealed what was in it. Also the baby she was pregnant with, Damons or Leo's. My $ is on Leo. The envelope told her to tell Mark Whalberg to kill Damon. And the child is Leo's. Damon was impotent (remember? :mischief )

Or the meaning/reasoning behind it. After giving it some more thought I think better of it now. I suppose I'm just upset that: Leo died without even getting a chance to fight.

That's the point; It's bleak. Sometimes life kicks you in the balls, but you get back up, other times your head gets chopped off by a piece of flying debris and you don't get back up. This movie is an example of the latter.
October 15, 200619 yr I saw this last night and don't really see what the fuss is about. Sure, it's entertaining but Scorsese doesn't really cover much new ground. The only thing this film was missing from his previous works was the overbearing voiceover. One of the initial criteria I use when evaluating a film is how well it sticks in my mind. Here I am about 12 hours later and the film is only memorable enough for me to write this post. When he tried covering new ground, it didn't work. The Aviator and Gangs of New York were good pieces of work, but they were far from incredibly entertaining like The Departed was. People like Scorsese because he makes violent and vulgar urban flicks. Why should he screw with something that works? If I wanted a revolutionary piece of filmmaking I wouldn't be looking at a Scorsese gangster movie.

October 16, 200619 yr Gangs of New York and Aviator were yawntastic in my opinion. I LOVE the Jack Nicholson/hooker/bowl of cocaine scene. So perfect. "Snort it, 'til you're number, baby!" His best work, remains, in my mind, Goodfellas.
October 16, 200619 yr The snort til your numb line was great.....but I wish they would have used the original of Comfortably Numb. The guy with the crappy sounding voice singing the chorus took my attention away from the movie until it was over.

Yeah I called him out on that in my review of the movie. My top 5 Scorsese films (I've seen them all besides The Last Waltz): 1. Taxi Driver 2. Gangs of New York (Daniel Day Lewis was so fawking robbed it's not even funny) 3. Raging Bull 4. The Departed 5. Goodfellas

October 16, 200619 yr I'm not really into crime/gangster/"let's shoot people every ten minutes for the hell of it" movies too much (Heat, as an exception) but The Departed was good for what it's worth. I went with someone who'd seen Infernal Affairs so he wasn't that impressed but it was cool. It was a little long for my taste but that Irish/bagpipe song they kept playing was badass.

He wasn't really plotting some revenge scheme (of course some new elements are thrown in), but the aura's of the two characters are nearly identical. You must also consider the two films take place 150 years apart, but regardless, they are strikingly similar. I'm only talking about Leo's portrayal. It's not like it was a typecast or something. Similar characters, but very different portrayal and acting.
October 16, 200619 yr Well he was typecast, actually, but not in a traditional sense. He wasn't typecast IMO, he is just a favorite of Scorcese's. After the Teddy Roosevelt movie, that'll be 4 movies in 6 years that Leo and Martin have hooked up....unless that's what you meant.
