Yes, I know the great majority of us have already posted our top 5 on this board sometime in the past 5 years, but who doesn't love talking about their favorites? Besides, this board is going through a bit of a lull and we need to spice it up a bit. You may have seen threads similar to this, such as the illustrious 'your favorite movies' thread from 5 months ago, and your probably wondering why I didn't bump them, however after some sniffing around, I figured it'd be best to make a whole new thread in 'Movies' instead of bumping that really old one in the Media forum. Now here's a small guide I decided to type up to help the morons among us...

 

TOTTFMOATT for Dummies:

 

1. Post your top 10 favorite movies of all time.

 

2. Explanations are cool. If you want to go off on a rant about why your number 4 favorite movie, 'The Waterboy', is so great, go for it! No guarantees that I care, but knock yourself out.

 

3. No lumping. Try to avoid posting 'trilogies' such as the Star Wars Trilogy or the Lord of the Rings Trilogy as ONE movie. Feel free to include all of the movies in your list, but try not to take three separate films and lump them into, say, your #3 slot.

 

4. Debates are cool, but don't be a moron by trashing another person's opinion. Try to avoid idiocy like, "You like 'Maid in Manhattan'?!?! LoLz what a n00b. Kil yurself!" at all costs.

 

5. For some reason I also feel obligated to add, 'have fun'.

Note--As I pondered this topic for the umpteenth time, I realized that a great way to approach this is by asking myself, "Which movies I could stand to see several times without growing bored of them?" Using that as a basis for my list, here it is:

Jurassic Park, Forrest Gump, Big Fish, Life is Beautiful, Far and Away, Top Gun, Gangs of New York, Last of the Mohicans, Dances with Wolves all other movies I would definitely call 'favorites'.

 

As you can see, I am a huge fan of action and fantasy. I don't know why I am enamored with Love Actually, but something about it is quite appealing to me. The only movie on that list some of you might not be familiar with (The Game) is a great psychological action thriller starring Michael Douglas and Sean Penn. Oh and 'Rear Window' is a pretty fantastic Hitchcock flick. I could EASILY have 10 more movies to replace those, but I just happened to think of these at the moment. I'm not great at pulling thoughts from my mind. I have more of a 'physical' memory than a 'recall' memory. If you give me a list of all the movies I've seen, that would be much easier for me.

I'm pretty comfortable with my Top 6, but 7-10 have a lot of competition. I'll probably post some explanations at some point, gradually, when I have time.

Would it really? I think it would be easier just to have '20' movies that are favorites, rather than top 20 in order. Because I'm having a hard time quantifying how much I like some of these movies.

1. Braveheart - Dude, it's Braveheart

2. Training Day - Denzel puts on the best acting performance ever; and I'm serious

3. Die Hard - Just grew up loving it and it stuck

4. Donnie Darko - Cool story, cool effects, cool music

5. Batman Begins - Best superhero movie ever

6. Saving Private Ryan - Just because it was groundbreaking

7. Cinderella Man - Awesome story and Giamatti is unbelievable

8. Collateral - Cruise and Foxx are great together. Great soundtrack

9. The Shawshank Redemption - the story is just phenomenal

10. Garden State - probably for soudtrack reasons only

 

Once you get past Braveheart and Training Day, those aren't in any particular order.

1-Wizard of Oz (Call me what you will but this was a great story)

2-The Godfather Series (Tops the mob movies)

3-Rudy (Best sports true story and perfectly done)

4-Goodfellas (Loved Pesci and Liotta in this one)

5-The Natural (Best fictional sports movie)

6-Dumb and Dumber (It was hilarious and good writing no matter how stupid it looks)

7-Austin Powers series (I'm a big fan of creativity)

8-Gangs of New York (The bar fight scene was enough for me)

9-Forest Gump (Goofy but interesting)

10-Pulp Fiction (Samuel L kickin as@ and taking names)

Wow. Kiss Kiss Bang Bang is really that good, huh? Would you mind posting a review on it, with a little story recap? I'm kind of intrigued by this one...

 

That was an awesome movie, I'd recommend it. It's very catchy in every aspect (title, beginning, plot). If I recall the plot correctly, it's about this loser (Robert Downey Jr, who narrates throughout) who somehow makes it to LA posing as an actor. All is well until he gets caught in the middle of a murder in which he gets framed by getting stuck with the corpse. So along with his 'acting coach' and his childhood crush, now a hopeless LA actress, he has to find out who's behind the murder. So yeah, it's not your average comedy. It's very clever with some action and mystery to keep you entertained. Downey is hilarious and Val Kilmer plays such a damn good gay guy.

1. Jackie Brown - Very well done movie. Pam Grier is hilarious, as is De Niro. Plus the final money exchange and how they show it is great. Great soundtrack, a pretty good ensemble, and an awesome script. You can't ask for more.

Man on the Train: A foreign movie alot may not have seen. If you ever have the chance to rent this movie, do it ! Here is the tagline from the movie - A poet. A thief. Two strangers with nothing in common are about to trade their lives for a chance to cheat their destinies. Great story.

The Return : For any aspiring film students, see this movie ! It is the most beautifully directed movie you will see and actually be able to follow, with the ability to entertain. The scenery in this movie stays with you a long time. Just something about the way the director shot the movie is so ...eerie ? You can't shake the 'feeling' you get from this movie. If anybody else on here has seen it, you'll know what I mean. errr...Maybe ?

Unforgiven: In my opinion the best western with the greatest American actor of all time. Clint Eastwood is incredible and I could have included any of his movies, but I feel this is his masterpiece. If you are into Westerns and Clint, I will make a suggestion to you. Check out the movie "The Proposition". An amazing western genre movie, that I almost put on this list. Nearly on par with Unforgiven.

Vanilla Sky : Alot of people hate this movie. I can see why. Tom Cruise as an arrogant a**hole with a somewhat choppy plot. How can anyone like it ? I just love the dreamlike state and feel Tom Cruise in that role makes it even better. I can't explain why I love this movie to the countless people who hate it. Oh well.

Have you seen the orginal that Vanilla Sky was closely based on? It's a spanish film entitled Abre Los Ojos (Open Your Eyes) and I really liked it. You should check it out.
