August 18, 200619 yr Vanilla Sky : Alot of people hate this movie. I can see why. Tom Cruise as an arrogant a**hole with a somewhat choppy plot. How can anyone like it ? I just love the dreamlike state and feel Tom Cruise in that role makes it even better. I can't explain why I love this movie to the countless people who hate it. Oh well. Have you seen the orginal that Vanilla Sky was closely based on? It's a spanish film entitled Abre Los Ojos (Open Your Eyes) and I really liked it. You should check it out. I have, but I think because I saw the english version first it remains my favorite. Abre Los Ojos is very good though too.

Once he sees that (yes, its oddly convienent and a bit too simple) he realizes that he must have the same problem that Sammy had. Does he look at that every time? About 96 times a day? Probably not, but "willingful suspension of disbelief" comes into play at that point. We're not supposed to believe he knows his condition until after he looks at his hand each new "session". Just how I interpreted it, I could be wrong.

Again, it's oddly convienent and too simple to say that he would look down at his hand at the start of each new memory session, understand what "Remember Sammy Jankis" is implying, and then apply Sammy's condition to himself, however its really the only somewhat logical explanation. So, although it's unrealistic and wildly naive, an explanation to why he knows about his condition is given. I'm not really disagreeing that it's a ludicrous explanation, because it absolutely is, I'm just saying why it's not a big deal to me.

Seriously? I know some people said it was talky compared to the first Volume, but to be honest, I thought the whole scene with Carradine at the end was awesome. It was a quintissential (sp?) Tarantino ending, akin to the end of Pulp Fiction.

But to say they are overrated is laughable. Brokeback mountain was boring as hell. You couldn't understand a word of what the Joker was saying. It was like he had a whole roll of paper towels in his mouth (Brando did that in Godfather, but at least you understand Corleone). It had good cintematography, but so what? Ang Lee is the most overrated director, I'm convinced.

Actually I think he's smart to use the Polaroids, much quicker reference then having to locate something on a video camera within a very short ammount of time.

Memento was mostly screwed because it didn't have the name recognition or box office appeal that the Academy wants.
