August 14, 200620 yr random access memory... Well I never really understood what RAM was for...but my best idea is that it's the most amount of memory you can use at any one time.
August 14, 200620 yr 512 is considered pretty much standard now. That is good enough, I personally got 1 GB and it allows me to do alot. Download music, surf the nut, play games, do video editing. now with 2 GB ur stepping up ur game even more.
August 14, 200620 yr 512MB was standard a few years ago, but 1024 (1GB) is pretty much the norm now a days. Sure you could get away with having 512, but you'll notice a nice difference if you spring for the full 1 gig.
August 14, 200620 yr I have 2 GB's but I am a whore. 1GB is going to be the standard soon. I've been testing a beta of Vista and let me tell you it says minimum requirements are 512 but it really should use a minimum of 1GB. 1GB is pretty cheap these days as long as its not dual channel RAM.
August 14, 200620 yr The correct answer is: it depends on what you are using your computer for. If all you are doing is going online and downloading music and porn, 512MB is more than enough. For most gaming, you won't notice a difference between 1GB and 2GB of memory - the size of your video card is what makes the biggest difference in that department. If you start getting into video editing, you need more RAM [as much as you can afford] and a larger video card [the most you can afford]. If you are looking for information to buy a general use home system, you can usually upgrade from 512MB to 1GB for $50 - which is totally worth it. Just keep your system defragged and your available disk space over 30% and you should be fine. Lastly, don't install and uninstall a bunch of crap you wont use. Hosing the registry and installing junk services is a sure-fire way to make your 2GB CoreDuo Pentium machine run like a 486...
August 14, 200620 yr Ctrl + Alt + Del Bottom right. I know you told me that yesterday, but it didn't work
August 14, 200620 yr Where can I find how much 'RAM' I have on my computer? Right click on My Computer and choose properties.
August 14, 200620 yr Where can I find how much 'RAM' I have on my computer? Right click on My Computer and choose properties. That just gives total space.
August 14, 200620 yr That just gives total space. That's because you right clicked on your C: drive. Right click on the "My Computer" icon and select "Properties". At the bottom it tells you your processor - comma - memory [RAM]. The long way to that same screen: Start - Control Panel - Performance and Maintenance - System
August 14, 200620 yr Ah ok thanks. I have 512. http://www.crucial.com/ Check that site. Start on the top right and choose your manufacturer of your computer and follow the steps. It will tell you the max amount of memory your machine can handle. You can even order new sticks at a really cheap price directly from Crucial?

August 14, 200620 yr 512 seems standard for laptops--at least it did for me when I got mine 8 or 9 months ago.
