What's the deal with Mitre?

Featured Replies

Is Sergio Mitre even supposed to have potential? Hes a 7th round draft pick. He's never had an era below 5.21, never had less hits than innings pitches, never struck anyone out, and never won any games, 5-13 career. Why is he even in the majors, is there something we're waiting for? He was a component in the Pierre deal, he started for the Cubs in some good rotations, and he's complaining about not starting, why is he even in our bullpen?

i believe this is his second year in the majors. last year he got flipped around like crazy by the cubs, and he was on the DL for more than 2 months this year.

he deffinately has potential. nasty curve.

i'm going to get ripped for this, but i like mitre alot...and i mean, borderline-top-of-the-rotation stuff.

his fastball has some nasty sink. the way he delivers and the sink reminds me a ton of brandon webb. he also has a nice breaking ball and change.

yes his major league numbers are extremely un-impressive, but not everyone comes up and has success right away. alot of you are spoiled because the marlins have had alot of success from first timers, such as dontrelle, cabrera, nolasco, johnson, olsen, etc. but for every one of them, there are two/three mitre's that struggle in their first tour.

i like what he throws...we'll see if he has the mental makeup to be successful. the luxury is with the five guys we have in our rotation, there is no pressure on him or the marlins for him to succeed. if he doesn't, oh well, we got nolasco from the deal. take that and run.

if he does, we can point and laugh at the cubs even harder for that deal. :shifty :thumbup

I like Mitre and thought he showed some signs of being able to put it all together as a SP. Unforunately for him he got injured and he has always been pretty horrible out of the pen.

I agree. I really like his sinking fastball, it is an exceptional pitch. I don't know if he will ever put it all together to be a front-of-the line rotation guy, but with one great pitch you can be a very good bullpen guy. I hope he sticks around.

He's never had dominating stuff IMO. He had done enough in the minors over the years to earn a shot in the bigs with the Cubs, and they gave it to him. He's never lived up to his potential, which isn't any better than 4th or 5th starter quality. He'd look a lot better if his arm wasn't dead for so long though. He had a long layoff there.

Look, I'm not saying the guy could or should be an ace on any staff, but I think that if we live in a world where AJ Burnett can get paid over 10 million a year to continue to post a losing career record, I think Sergio Mitre's at least good enough to be in the big leagues. Now whether that is as a starting pitcher or in the pen for long relief and maybe getting a spot start on a double header or becoming a one-inning guy, I can't tell you. But I don't think he's had a really fair chance at working a season as a starter to be judged. And if they had taken the time to get him ready to work as a starter I'd say put him in every sixth game to give the regular 5 a day off down the stretch. And if they don't have space on the roster for it then send down Reggie since they seem to not want to play him with any regularity.

I have nothing against Mitre. I didn't like his initial response about working out of the pen but I can sorta understand his way of thinking. He's not really a pen type guy. Think likewise why we sent some of our rookies back to AAA so they could get the time in. But we needed him back and he came back. I think too early, but here he is. Until they go to a 6 man rotation he will continue to struggle out of the pen. Struggle because he isn't getting the work he really needs to be effective. I think he is a 4 or 5 guy in our system. Probably higher on some other staff.

Too many fans fall into the trap of focusing on the radar gun. It's not just about how fast you throw, it's also about the movement on the pitch. There's a couple other things that make a pitcher great too (deception, location, confidence, scouting batters, height, fearful). Mitre has good movement.

Never impressed with him when he was in Chicago.

His run last year didn't impress you? Granted he came back down to Earth, but he showed what he is capable of. He has always lacked consistency, but the ability is there. He's just never had a chance to develop, the Cubs were more interested in capturing lightning in a bottle. The second a young player plays like a young player they get the boot. At least until this year when they didn't have anyone else but rookies.

Definately, but then it's not just fans either. I was amazed how much money Burnett got on his deal with the Blue Jays, especially considering his career record is a losing one, and he's not exactly a "young prospect" anymore that you can sell on his future potential. But because he can throw in the high 90s, people get excited. At least Carl Pavano's big money made sense after he came off a breakout year with like 18 wins, even if he's become totally useless. But Burnett has never been all that good. He just throws the ball really fast.

Actually, Burnett has some great secondary pitches as well. His curve and change are outstanding when he is going well.

I'm not saying he is a one pitch guy. I am saying that he isn't an $11 million a year for 4 or 5 years pitcher. I don't even remember if he has ever even had a winning record for a season. Definately hasn't the last few years. Simply put - I don't think he's very good, but he is getting paid what he is, not on the basis of those other pitches, but because he throws hard. If his fastball topped off at 93mph and everything else was the same, he wouldn't have the deal he has now.
