After prevailing in two straight games with the Nationals, the Marlins have a chance on Wednesday to do something the club hasn't pulled off since the middle of June: sweep a three-game series.

The Marlins last swept a three-game set June 16-18 at home against the Blue Jays. Those wins came in the midst of the team's franchise-tying nine-game winning streak.

 

Wednesday also marks the final meeting of the season between these division rivals. The Marlins hold a 10-7 advantage, including a 5-3 record at home.

 

Rookie Scott Olsen (9-6, 4.49 ERA) once again goes for his 10th victory. The 22-year-old left-hander has lost three straight starts, and he is after his first win since July 27, when he beat the Braves.

 

Should Olsen secure win No. 10, he would become the Marlins' third rookie this season to reach double digits in victories. The last time three rookies on the same staff each won 10 or more was the 1952 Brooklyn Dodgers, a team that went to the World Series.

 

In August, Olsen has struggled with his control. He has walked 13, while striking out 21, in four starts. The lefty comes off his roughest outing, giving up five runs on four hits with four walks in 1 2/3 innings on Aug. 18 against the Braves.

 

The Nationals are going with Tony Armas (8-8, 4.73 ERA). For his career, Armas has had his difficulties with the Marlins, posting a 3-11 record and 5.54 ERA in 16 starts.

FLA: LHP Scott Olsen (9-7, 4.49)

Olsen suffered his worst outing of the season in his last start against the Braves, allowing five runs on four hits over a season-low 1 2/3 innings. The defeat gave Olsen his third in a row. The rookie southpaw once again struggled with his control and walked four batters. Olsen is 0-1 this season against the Nationals in two appearances.

 

 

 

WAS: RHP Tony Armas (8-8, 4.73)

Armas is looking to win his second straight start. In his last outing, Armas pitched 5 1/3 innings and gave up three runs on six hits against the Phillies. All three runs came in the sixth. Pat Burrell had an RBI single, while Mike Lieberthal had a two-run double. Manager Frank Robinson thought Armas struggled throughout the game. Armas had problems throwing first-pitch strikes.

 

Player to watch

Washington's Alfonso Soriano is 3-for-9 in the series with a home run, two doubles and two RBIs.
