Josh Johnson (12-7, 3.20)

Hot-hitting Marlins face MetsNew York (88-55) at Florida (73-71), 7:05 p.m. ET By Joe Frisaro / MLB.comMore momentum is building in the Marlins' playoff push.

Blitzing the Mets 16-5 on Monday was the Marlins' third straight win. More importantly, it moved Florida to within two games of the Padres in the Wild Card standings.

The surging Marlins turn to rookie Josh Johnson in hopes of keeping their string running.

Now with 152 innings pitched, Johnson is in unchartered territory. The rookie, in his first full big-league season, the 6-foot-7, Tulsa, Okla. native has been challenging for the ERA title.

But in his last start, he struggled, losing to Philadelphia. Johnson gave up five runs on nine hits, plus four walks, in 4 2/3 innings. His ERA rose from 2.99 to 3.20.

Johnson has pitched well against the Mets, posting a 2-0 record and not allowing an earned run in 12 innings. He's given up three unearned runs. Both of those outings were before the All-Star break.

Since the All-Star break, Johnson is 4-3 with a 4.48 ERA.

The Marlins are sending left-hander Oliver Perez to the mound.

On the road, Perez is 0-6 with a 10.58 ERA in eight starts.

Pitching matchup

FLA: RHP Josh Johnson (12-7, 3.20)

Johnson endured his roughest outing in quite a while last time out, giving up five runs on nine hits with four walks in 4 2/3 innings against the Phillies on Thursday. The right-hander suffered the loss, watching his three-game win streak snapped. As is the case with all the rookie pitchers, holding up in September is a concern. Johnson has now thrown 152 innings. His 4 2/3-inning stint was his second shortest since joining the rotation. This will be his 24th start, and he's given up a home run in four straight outings.

NYM: LHP Oliver Perez (3-11, 6.58)

Perez's third and most recent start with the Mets -- a shutout against the Braves on Wednesday -- was the most surprising pitching performance at Shea Stadium since Bobby Jones' one-hitter against the Giants in the 2000 NLDS. Perez walked one and allowed five hits in nine innings, having averaged six walks and 11 hits per nine innings in his first 84 innings this season. He pitched nine innings, having averaged 4.9 innings per start in his first 17 starts. Those figures alone make for a "Go figure."

Player to watch

Cody Ross matched a couple of Marlins slugging records on Monday. His three home runs tied Mike Lowell (April 21, 2004, at Philadelphia). And his seven RBIs equal a club record now turned in three times, the last by Gary Sheffield on Sept. 18, 1995, at Philadelphia.

Nobody else caught this? Unfortunately for the Mets, I don't think Oliver could crack our rotation right now.

ANYWAYS...go Fish!

Padres with the early game tonight in Cinci. It will be nice to know how the wild card is affected before I go to sleep :)

Bobby Abreu has 6 RBI in the 1st inning against Tampa...yikes.

I really need the Yankees to win no more than 97 games this year and Im beginning to get nervous.
