Three Marlins File for Free Agency

I know there's a few who disagree for different reasons and would be happy (perhaps willing is a better word) but I don't think we've seen what Mike Jacobs is capable of, offensively or defensively, yet.

Cut down that swing a bit, see him able to run down the line at full speed on a shot deep into the hole or have some mobility around the base and I suspect more than a few who would trade him tomorrrow might change their tune.

As for Helms, the guy played in something like 140+/- games last season so short of a starting role somewhere else it's hard to imagine he'll get more playing time elsewhere. I'd be very pleased to the Wes and the Fish come to terms quickly and without a public spectacle.

Something else interesting to note about Wes Helms....

Take a look at his stats year by year. Although for the most part he's played only in platoon roles, his numbers have improved almost every season.

Average:

2001 - .222

2002 - .243

2003 - .261

2004 - .263

2005 - .298

2006 - .329

His .obp and slugging numbers generally have gone up too.

Wes Helms is only 30, and his stats seem to show that he's peaking right now.

Maybe this is a case where we could get a year or two of a guy at the top of his career for bargain prices.

I'd be content with either guy going into '07 though.

Glad to see Reggie cname wasn't mention on the list :)

no, but he'll be on the list of players the marlins cut in spring training..

wouldnt mind see all three back if they are in their proper roles , herges has use as a middle reliever , moehler would be a perfect mop up man dont want to see him as a starter , and helms as a part time starter would be ideal whether the marlins want to spend the money the build up the bench is a different question.

I just wouldn't want Moehler to be the default 6th starter for a double header or if a starter goes on the DL. I'd rather pretty much anyone, including but not limited to Vargas, Mitre, Pinto, or any of the minor league arms.

Speaking of Vargas, he just had a good outing in the DWL.

BTW, does anyone have a good (for anglos) site for keeping up with stats, personnel, etc for the winter leagues?

Maybe Moehler can go play for the Yankees. I mean whatever they pay him, all he has to do is actually pitch for them and he'll be more worth it than Pavano.

Another Aaron Small story? GREAT!
