November 10, 200619 yr Saw today that Craig Counsell is a free agent. Maybe not as much power as you would want from a pinch hitter, but he can play pretty much the whole infield. Another one of those ex-Marlins in the later phases of his career, that could possibly be persuaded to come back as a mentor.
November 10, 200619 yr Maybe if Helms go elsewhere and the price is right. How much would Counsell be expecting?
November 10, 200619 yr I like Craig Council. I don't want him. 1. No place for him to play, so he's a bench guy 2. Our bench is not a problem that CC will help. If we keep Helms, we have no bench problems.
November 10, 200619 yr Craig Counsel?...thats the one utility player I would convert to a centerfielder. As much heart and dedication he puts into the game he would be successful anywhere he plays. He would put Amezaga to shame in a second
November 10, 200619 yr No thank you. I agree with you. Never was a big Craig fan. And why would we take an IFer and try to turn him into a CFer in our spacious ball park when there are far better options out there.
November 10, 200619 yr Great guy but we just dont need him right now. Wes Helms still fits the bill for us.
November 10, 200619 yr Helms will not be back, unless we move Jacobs and give him the start. I expect Counsel will want $2MM plus, and that's too rich for a backup. Amega fills the backup bill just fine.
November 10, 200619 yr Problem with Counsell is he can't stay healthy anymore. Shoulder, neck, time is catching up with him. Always liked the guy but a payroll-challenged team like the Fish can't (I don't think) afford the luxury. I wish him well. I certainly do hope that the Marlins bring back Helms, I'd be dissappointed if they weren't able to. Borowski, I have mixed feelings about. It isn't that I think we can do better, I'm more concerned that last season was the high water mark for this aging closer. If he moves on so be it, if Beinfest thinks he can still contribute, I'm cool with that too, but he wouldn't be my first choice.
