I can't see him going into the Hall anything but a Marlin. He had his best individual seasons here, and he also won his only ring here... If he had won a ring with the Yanks, I think it would have been as a Yankee, but after this, I doubt he goes in with another team, IF he goes.

Basically, if he gets to 500 with the Tigers, wins a ring and some form of individual award, he goes in there, but it'll take all three to make him not go in as a Marlin, if he goes.

do you guys think he makes it in at all?

that would be a beautiful thing to see

He'll probably go in as a Yankee. That is what he is best known as.

not a chance in hell

That'd be great if he made it into the HOF as a marlin, the first of many to come.

:lol :lol :lol

If it's not as a Marlin, it's as a Dodger.

But the raw numbers are on our side:

Most games played as a Marlin, most homeruns as a Marlin, only ring here.

No freaking way. If he goes in the HOF as a Yankee, that's an outrage. To me, he'll always be known as a Marlin. If not a Marlin, a Padre.

think about this.

sheffields teams have been: millwaukee brewers

san diego padres

florida marlins

L.A. dodgers

atlanta braves

new york yankees

sheff spent 5 seasons with us. the only world championship he ever had. even if he won a championship in detroit, the first is the most special and he still calls so.florida home.

sheff never spent more than 5 seasons anywhere else.

so tell me folks, how could scheffield see his way clear to enter into the hall of fame other than a florida marlins?

Thanks to some "discrepancies" in the past (Winfield, Boggs) while letting players pick teams, the Hall of Fame selects the cap the player wears. Input is important, but the players don't have the final word.

The decision is made based on what the player will be most remembered as...if he wins another ring with Detroit, hits his 500th HR as a Tiger and wins some form of award (MVP, ALCS MVP, WS MVP) the case could very easily made for a 'maverick' player like Sheff to be remembered as part of his last great team...especially if that team has rich history (like the Tigers).

Interesting topic. I never realized that Sheffield had accumulated the most stats as a Marlin. Is there another player that is less associated with one team than Sheff? Most games, at bats, HR's, etc and his only ring....makes him go in as a Marlin.

Winfield, Clemens and Hunter jump to mind:

It's either the Padres or the Marlins.

He didn't even spend 2 full seasons in San Diego...I fail to understand why they'd be ahead of teams where he had longer tenures and equal if not more all-star appearances.

did you just start following this sport in the past 2 years?

Yeah, thats it.

The guy played for a small market team for 5 years and has seemingly no connection to them anymore. He was a large part of the biggest, most overhyped, most visible team in the majors for 3 years. He's very mindful of his image, and I think he realizes that going in as a Yankee would make him seem like more of a legend in the eys of the people.

Do you think anyone thinks of him and sees him as a Marlin?

If it was up to him, I think he'd want to be in as a Yankee.

the yankees dumped him like yesterday's trash, i'm sure he still feels great about the organization.

any real baseball fan (and i think we know who are real baseball fans)thinks of him as a marlin predominantly.

miami is not a small market, again we need to clarify things. small revenue, not small market.

just because a player spent 3 years on one team in a huge market and the casual fan recognizes someone as one thing, doesnt mean squat. casual fans dont have any say in the hall of fame.

Do you think anyone thinks of him and sees him as a Marlin?

He does. In a maxim interview last spring he said that his time in Florida was the best of his career and that he always praises Miami and the Marlins to anyone asking him.

We certainly were NOT a "small-market" team in 1997. We were also a world champion. I can't at all see him going as a Yankee. It's easily between Florida and Los Angels IMO, no question. I don't think the Padres or Yanks come anywhere near those two. And I guarantee the Marlins would be the team he goes in with if it came down to FLA or LA...

And like someone else said, he also talks about his past here frequently and how much he loved it.

It's either the Padres or the Marlins.

You're right. I was under the impression he began his career with the Padres, not the Brewers.

He's going to the Hall of Fame as a fish, he became famous here. Think about it, he really did! But anyways, who really cares, I rather see a guy that spends his whole career in a Marlins UNi go to the Hall with our team under his name.
