November 21, 200619 yr Tank Mitre Pinto Gregg Owens Messenger Garcia, Petit, Lindstrom? Man, you'd love to see us actually sign a closer.. would make all the roles so much easier to figure out.
November 21, 200619 yr As it stands right now, Tank and Pinto in the back-end-ish and Owens has a spot to lose back there too...everyone else, we'll just throw against a wall and see what sticks. Also, I think Garcia has an inside track for a pen spot. Tank, Pinto, Garcia, likely Owens and Gregg...one more spot to fill, two at the most...man would it be nice to go get two reliable free agent arms.
November 21, 200619 yr Mitre will be gone... Vanden Hurk will be fighting for a spot in ST. A Closer type to be signed in F/A Lindstrom will also fight for a spot as a setup guy
November 21, 200619 yr Garcia will be there somewhere. I would like to see us sign a veteran or two, or invite a whole bunch of vets to ST and see what happens. It's worked before.
November 21, 200619 yr I wouldn't be surprised if the Marlins were either acting as surrogates for another team or acquiring some of these guys to package later for someone else. The FA reliever market is out of control and these guys could actually be worth more come spring.
November 21, 200619 yr Considering the Fish haven't had to trade a single quality prospect or 2006 MLer (I'm not talking about Vargas or Resop who barely contributed over a 162 game schedule) so far they've done a pretty well at improving themselves at least around the periphery. Yes, the still need a closer and perhaps another setup guy, but all in all, ignoring the naysayers and those who think every reliever should strike every batter out close and late, so far Beinfest is at least assembling a group of arms that have the potential to be a lot more competitive than what we saw mid-season last year. When you add Pinto, Garcia and Tank, and perhaps another kid who steps up, things could look alot worse.
November 21, 200619 yr I don't know about you guys but I'm fully content with Tank in the closer role if a reclamation project like Gagne or Foulke proves to be too expensive. I think what we're sorely lacking is a fireman for the middle. Tank will be used exclusively in setup or closing, depending on how the market settles after the winter meetings. Now, I'm not saying we don't have that on the team right now (Gregg/Pinto/Owens could satisfy that plenty if they step up), just saying that is what we've been lacking since Chad Fox got hurt and what really makes our bullpen fail. Not saying I'm in penguino's anti-closer camp, however I don't think anyone can rationally argue that's ever been our big problem in the pen.
November 21, 200619 yr Mitre will get moved. Someone will be desperate for starting pitchers by the end of the offseason, even if it is bottom of the rotation filler. Mitre has shown nothing as a reliever. He needs to be a starter to be worth anything, and he's not going to make our rotation. I wouldn't mind him terribly as a spot starter (would be better than Moehler) but I'd rather use Pinto or Petit for that.

Say what you want about talent better utilized elsewhere, but Tank gives us the opportunity to both have a good closer and have the same closer for the forseeable future. I think it's a move that needs to be done.
November 21, 200619 yr Since Owens is being used as a closer in the Dominican and closed out some games in the minors is that his spot to lose this spring?

November 21, 200619 yr what about K-Mart for a spot in the bullpen? is his arm better? No. He'll probably be back in 2008.
