Great ballpark news!!!!

Featured Replies

Sounds promising, but I'm not getting too excited just yet.

I'm extremely unfamiliar with the area, does anyone know how many miles this location is from Dolphin Stadium?

So if it is built there invest in a concealed weapons permit to be able to get to and from the car at night games?

I dont think that will happen at all. The first thing you will see is alot of business buying up buildings next to the stadium. If there are going to be 20,000+ evey game they will need somewhere to eat and drink. I think we will see a change atleast in the immediate surrounding area.

Yea, like all the businesses around Joe Robbie Stadium :mischief

There is a BIG difference between downtown Miami and "Miami Gardens".

Thats just a huge parking lot, not in the middle of downtown. The area around American Airlines Arena is nice. Most stadiums/areans have pretty nice areas right around them. The bronx isnt the nicest place, but right around yankee stadium its pretty nice.

There's going to be some supposed NEW Marlins ballpark news coming up on WQAM at 5:00 from fat Hank.

For what it's worth....Fat Hank's news was that, "I have been told that the legislature is ready to pass the 60 Million exemption, and things are proceeding on the downtown location".

Great news.

I hope it gets done. It would be the greatest feeling in the world if they announce a deal before the season begins.

I'm buying two season ticket packets as soon as this happens. Maybe by then I can invest in some land neighboring the future stadium...who knows.

I want to be as optimistic as the next guy, but I'm having a hard time seeing a major league ballpark in the area that they're talking about without massive land acquisition and demolition of existing structures! I had a little fun with the Property Appraiser's records for the lots in questions. Here's what I can deduce:

The properties outlined in RED are owned by Miami-Dade County.

The properties outlined in BLUE are owned by the City of Miami.

The properties outlined in YELLOW are owned by the State of Florida.

The properties outlined in PINK are owned by FEC.

As you can see, the County's largest "vacant lot" is 3.39 acres in area. The city lot to the west totals 2.79 acres, but half of which is developed. I'm sorry, but there isn't enough room there for a stadium, much less a retractable roof stadium.

I did a comparison of other MLB stadiums, in terms of area, which would be similar to what the Marlins want. The figures don't paint a pretty picture of this site:

Minute Maid Park has a total area of 28.97 acres.

Safeco Field has a total area of 19.59 acres.

Miller Park has a stadium area alone of 25.00 acres.

Chase Field (the former BoB) has a land area of 25.09 acres.

Finally, as a point of local reference, the Orange Bowl has a total area of 35.95 acres.

Even with 9.00 acres to develop, it just doesn't add up. There has got to be major land acquisition costs here, followed by major demolition costs, then construction costs. It's as if George W. Bush's "fuzzy math" is involved here. I may be wrong on this, but on the surface, it just doesn't add up!

That was my thing from the beginning. Not only is the site seemingly too small, it's the shape isn't conducive to ballpark construction.

I see what you're saying. It's as if the city is actually saying to them "Go play in a (literal) sandlot (parking lot)." What I don't get is all this expectation that MLB is going to "fix things" down there and, yet, chose to spin the story on their website as if everything was done except for the signing of papers. What exactly are they contributing to the process other than entertaining this idea?!

This is so opposite of what has happened at D.C., where they had that city over the barrel after convincing their last Mayor to sign on to a ballpark deal that's generous (from the league's standpoint), now being built near the Anacostia River. Something tells me that either they have nothing to leverage for a better location or Bud Selig has told Dupuy to work with Loria instead of bringing in a fresher perspective. What I would have hoped for is that the league would stand in as the "private parties" and then have Marlins ownership pay them back their share of the costs in increments.

When John Henry was the owner of the Marlins, I worked for the company responsible for design and development of the stadium. We were actually 6 million under budget and the stadium was to have a retractable roof that opens like a Chinese hand fan. There is way more to the story, but I'm not going to sit here all day and make a book. Long story short, land and construction costs weren't an issue. He was simply playing games so the gov. can pay more, same with Loria.

Thank you for that information, it sounds pretty interesting the old idea for the stadium design. I do hope this can get resolved for the future and loria is gone from the ownership.

Well I’m not exactly familiar with Loria's financial status, but from looking at it from afar, I would probably do the same as John and Jeff. Sooner or later the gov. will budge more money and so will the MLB, especially if you have connections (not what you know, but who you know).

My point being, that it has nothing to do with neither land nor construction costs. Also, take into account Jeff like John has a team of lawyers so does HKS Arch............

I wouldn’t even pay attention to anything you read because unless you have an original bid which is classified.

...Except that the Marlins' architects aren't HKS, it's HOK.

And I wouldn't "pay attention" to anyone who says otherwise.

You can bet that Loria will leave the Marlins on his own terms, not anyone else's.

Would he really have a choice...? :mischief2

Well, he seems to be in control of things more than we would like to admit. Otherwise, there would have been a "new private party" at the negotiations by now.

who sez that won't be the case in the near future? Loria is not exactly the most popular owner in baseball amongst his peers and his godfather Bud "Light" isn't gonna be hanging around that much longer. Loria really is not as affluent an owner as baseball would like in S Fl. How much longer will baseball owners be happy with supporting his art collection? I believe the stadium will be the beginning of the end of the Loria Era with the Marlins. If he doesn't start spending on the franchise, The Team will be passed on to someone who can and will spend the money to make this a solid, successfull franchise for years to come
