not to be a killjoy or anything but we have read similar articles a billion times allready... lets hope this one is for real though, marlins are running out of time till 2010

We've been here before, multiple times.

I'll believe it when I see it. Only thing that I find of interest in this article is that MLB believes it can find a way to get financing without state money.

I undestand your feelings for i have shared them with you except that we have never been quite here before, this time it is very different. No barriers or roadblocks are evident. A concrete plan is in place...there is no financial gap of any kind. There is no further lobbying necessary. Swift we are on new grounds, we are on our way to having a MLB stadium in Miami

I am with Swift on this one. Until I see them break ground on this bad boy I'm going to be kind of pessimistic about it.

i've been really impressed with DuPay so far and am cautiously optimistic that this time it will all work out

I one day want to travel for opening day in a beautiful new stadium

While the county has been our ally from day one, I believe MLB joined in because they are, frankly, bigger and have more power than the puppet regime running Miami city hall. Arriola could threaten and try to extort Loria/Samson into selling but DuPuy has the power to say "bye-bye Miami we're moving to Hialeah, or ____________ " and is not about to be pushed around. It's frankly about time they got involved.

This article is great news. It would be very surprising if this doesn't get done.

Marlins2003, I think you hit the nail on the head when you said the reporter's likely lack of understanding of Miami lead him to write "miles from the American Airlines Arena." I think we are clearly dealing with the Government Center site here.

I don't know about that. I was going to South Miami today and went down North Miami Avenue to where I was describing above, 14/15th street area.

My god, if there were ever an area that cried out for redevelopment (at this point every business has moved out), it's no-man's land, crack city. I know it's in a CRA, it is beyond roll your windows up, lock the doors and don't make eye contact scary. If you know where I mean (where North Miami makes a little jog, just north of 395 and you can tell from the old style bank and other buildings this was once a thriving neighborhood), a) the land mass is enormous, b) unless something huge goes in it may never be redeveloped piecemeal and c) you can see the new Performing Arts center three blocks immediately to the east. Putting the stadium there would accomplish a number important goals - the not the least is for MLB to look good redeveloping another inner city area (PR baby, PR) as well as provide (perhaps) a shared "safe" corridor for all the blue-bloods attending the PAC are currently terrified parking in the area (see Herald story a month or so ago).

Again I 'm speculating but I still don't see how government center works (I think it may have been a ruse while certain people picked up needed parcels of land) and being zoned governmental may not qualify as an RDA as described in the article. What you want is to plant yourself in an place already designated blighted and where CRA and RDAs have been established so you don't have to start the grant-writing process from scratch which can take to get through the federal pipeline.

But I could also be 100% wrong. I'm going down that way in Tuesday, I'll try to find out more.

I hope it happens it would be awesome news (and make me forget about the jets loss today)

Are the Jets some type of sports team?

Ive never heard of them.

neither have I...

I am usually hesitant when it comes to ballpark news such as this latest update, but I am optimistic for one major reason: DuPuy and the MLB brass have seemingly taken over the negotiations leaving the "ironman" out of the headlines.

does this mean we can stop crying poverty even though this team makes millions upon millions before selling one ticket or one tshirt?

We'll see. Speaking of which, does anyone know how much exactly teams will be getting from MLB this year from the sale of the Nationals to Lerner? Does every team but the Marlins get a cut? Or does Loria get a cut as well?

Well, since the Marlins entertained the idea of building the stadium at the Orange Bowl, I don't see why they wouldn't at least entertain the location you're talking about. At least a stadium would be more aesthetically pleasing than a cement mixing plant (nothing against cement mixing companies, mind you, for they provide valuable employment for many and, yeah, Rinker may see business with a stadium construction project). Also, the Marlins would get space for parking that they wouldn't have to share with downtown businesses/city government workers. And with the right engineering, people would have that much-ballyhooed view of the bay from the upper deck.

It's also possible that a location closer to 195 might turn up, especially that open sore near Roberto Clemente Park (where a bunch of containers are). Plenty of space there, at least. ;)

If you're right, we may look back and regard it as one of those "why didn't they look at that in the first place?" moments.

Rinker's plant would be the LAST thng to go. They aren't moving until every square inch for fifty miles around has been covered in concrete. :D

But not fear, there is a ton of land around the cement plant.

I'm not 100% familiar with the area. Would it be considered downtown?, uptown?, Motown?...or none of the above? Is it within walking distance of all those office workers and execs that are supposed to stream out of work and head to the game?

Are you familiar with the Omni Mall (it may have a new name now)? This is a few blocks west of the Omni and maybe a couple of miles north of Downtown. I think this is right in the middle of a really bad part of town but I think this discussion is moot because I think the writer of the article made a mistake in his description of the stadium's location.

Sometimes all it takes is a different voice even if they're preaching the same message.

Wow, I know the area and I think I'd feel safer in the Green Zone in Baghdad. It could be the country's first maximum security ballpark.

.

.

But, if it happens, it's centrally located. And close to Jackson Memorial Hospital just in case. Hey, that's why they call it redevelopment. I'd go.

.

.

I agree it's likely moot.

They should just take cranes are start smashing buildings down there. I think if the stadium gets done in down town we will see some sort of change.

they make millions upon millions based on the national broadcasting contracts alone.

I just want to warn everyone I'm wild azz guessing about what I threw out there.

I know the MLB likes the "we've helped rehabilitate another downtown" mantra, so I look around and this is the largest chunk of land in the worst possible condition, so it fits their (pardon the phrase) "gameplan". It a ten minute cab ride for county hall/government center and probably fifteen from Brickell. I also believe it's where the MetroMover terminates.

There's also the McArthur Dairy location between seventh and 95 which MD is trying to sell, but my guess is it is just too narrow for a stadium.

Not to mention local TV contracts, revenue sharing etc. But I am wondering is if anyone knows how much teams are getting from MLB specifically that comes from the profit MLB reaped from the sale of the Nationals to Lerner. From what vague and scattered info I have been able to find, it seems the lion's share is going to be disbursed this year to teams. But I haven't been able to find out how much, if the disbursement is even to all teams and whether Loria gets a cut.

...or someone who isn't such a butthead. Samson was such a poor choice to spearhead the Marlin's stadium negotiations in so many ways.

So if it is built there invest in a concealed weapons permit to be able to get to and from the car at night games?

I dont think that will happen at all. The first thing you will see is alot of business buying up buildings next to the stadium. If there are going to be 20,000+ evey game they will need somewhere to eat and drink. I think we will see a change atleast in the immediate surrounding area.

Yea, like all the businesses around Joe Robbie Stadium :mischief
