Caught this awful awful blurb on Henry Owens

Featured Replies

Owens is a nice sleeper for saves in 2007. The 28 year-old former catcher throws a blazing, high 90s heater. The Fish acquired he and Lindstrom in the Jason Vargas deal. The concern is that Owens is pitching with an elbow ligament tear. Cross your fingers - if it doesn't flare up he could be the best Florida reliever in '07. While it was only 40 Double A innings, take a look at his MLE: 2.71 ERA, 0.99 WHIP, 11.8 K/9, 2.7 BB/9. In other words, that is how his Double A work translates to the Majors.

I hadn't heard anything about that before. Shoot me.

Seems to me likes it's only speculation. Nobody can pitch in the 90's with a torn ligament, and no major league team would allow it.

don't we have 3-4 examples within the past 4 seasons?

Given Beinfests history with spooney then bowyer...does this truly shock anyone

Oh well, it's not like we gave up much. Bowyer will still get a good shot in the future.

You would think we would have checked that out when we acquired him.

pretty sure all players had to pass physicals, and the marlins team doctors were given all medical records. Between the combination of those two, even if the mets were to intentionally omit it (but im not interested in conspiracy theories so I'll leave it at that), this just sucks for the Marlins because they should have spotted it themselves if true. I'm sure they'll file a grievance if they believe the mets were intentionally trying to screw them, but it'll be very hard to win so I don't see us being able to negate the trade or receive another player as some in the thread have suggested. Unless something has changed, the Reds are furious at the Nationals over Majewski and I haven't seen the commish's office rule in their favor to have washington send something to Cincy to satisfy the 'problem.' It just is, what it is I'm afraid. Hopefully it's not true, because Owens could be a good one. I think he's a pen lock if healthy.

He certainly did well in the winter leagues.

I wonder if somehow the author has his players mixed up or is significantly out of date. Owens had a rash of injuries in 2004 which led to Pittsburgh leaving unprotected in the 2005 Rule 5 draft. But since then he has remained relatively healthy and I doubt the Mets would have had him pitching this winter if he had something that sounds that serious wrong with him.

I don't believe this note at all...we would have heard more by now, much more. Owens will be in ST as expected, he will be 100% ready and will make his claim for a job in the bullpen

Nothing to do but sit back and see what happens with him. Like Swift said, hopefully this isn't a Bowyer and Spooneybarger situation.

I doubt a guy with a known elbow problem of that severity would even attempt to pitch in winter ball. Or maybe that's why he got shut down..... Anybody know about that?

He was shut down the day he was traded to the Marlins, came back and took his physical.

Does this look like a line for a guy with a ligament tear in his elbow? I searched Google and came up empty. Maybe someone can find out more.
