Why don't the Marlins bring in another catcher?

There is definately someone out there that can beat out Treanor. Why not give Sandy Alomar an invite to Spring Training? He's a better player than Treanor in every facet of the game and would really help out the young pitching staff.

This is not about Treanor. It's about Alomar.

The guy has had nine knee surgeries (at least seven on his left knee, at least one on his right, I think it's two), he's 41 years old, he can still hit lefties but hitting righties is only a fond memory. It's doubtful he can actually still catch an entire game, his best bet for staying in the major leagues is as third catcher/lefty DH specialist in the AL. Defensively, he caught five of 27 stolen base attempts in 2006 and that was with two relatively experienced pitching staffs.

We all respect what the guy has contributed to the game and like old love affairs, time has a way of erasing the negative and leaving us with positive memories. The Ted Williams I remember never ever made an error. The Sandy Alomar we might want to acquire last played in 2002-2003, it's been downhill ever since.

Take a dispassionate look at his offensive and defensive numbers the last five years and tell me there hasn't been marked decline almost seasonally. Even keeping his OBP above .300 hasbecome problematic. If we had a roster spot available for a third catcher and he could play some first base (ignoring the Boone acquisition for the moment), maybe, maybe there would be a place for him. But on this team we have Willingham as our emergency catcher and beyond that Jacobs, he can't challenge (health-wise) for number two and the roster spot will go to insure an position backup need.

It's not by accident he remains unsigned.

Because they spent 2 million plus incentives on Miguel Olivo.

we shouldve non-tendered him

;)

The idea we aren't bringing in some competition for Treanor because of Olivo's contract is a stretch. Despite the fact it would be a good idea to bring in some competition for Treanor, I have not seen nor read any indication that budget considerations are preventing the Marlins from doing this. Unfortunately, the Marlins seem to be satisfied with Treanor where he is with no competition in sight.

Matt Treanor......career average .220 OPS .604 Those numbers trump whatever defense he's plays.

he plays once, maybe twice a week...what do you want? mark mcguire behind the plate or someone to keep the kids in line? personally...ill take the latter...especially how once or twice a week he can shut down the opposing running game

That's nonsense. Treanor's career CS % is 65%. The MLB average is 71%. Treanor is below par at throwing out baserunners.

treanor is also probably one of the best back-up backstops in the game...he plays defense and throws a high percentage of runners out...if you want treanor gone, either learn more about the game or root for a different team

Agreed. Nobody knows how to handle the staff like him. He's a leader, a great defensive backup, and calls a great game. When it comes to backup catchers, they're backups for a reason. If Matt could hit the ball decently, he'd be making as much as Olivo. But he's a well below average hitter that is a fantastic backstop, and that's what you look for off the bench.

I don't know where this whole myth about Treanor handling the staff like no one else or holding them together came from. At this point, he is basically Scott Olsen's personal catcher and a backup for whenever Olivo is tired for everyone else on the staff. The team will not fall apart if Scott Olsen's personal catcher is sent down to Albuquerque and if we can bring in any type of real competition by ST I am all for it.

ding ding ding...we have a winner...besides...has anyone seen the quality of MLB catcher over the last few years...its gone down...we actually have one of the better catching situations in the bigs right now if olivo has another decent year

he also catches for dontrelle(or at least did most of the year)...i have no argument about trying to bring in someone better...you could say that about any position...but for a back up catcher...treanor is all i could ask for

Olivo took over catching for Dontrelle during the second half of 2006. So I call him Scott Olsen's personal catcher. With his bat, Matt Treanor needs to earn his spot on the 25 man roster year in and year out. Plain and simple. At this point he is just being given a free pass.

well we dont have anyone in the system and anyone with more talent than treanor is pretty much signed or seen that talent blow away with shotty knees or back or something...so before someone here calls me a treanor fan boy...i just realize that the market is thin and we are dreaming if we think a pudge that no one ever heard of is going to fall into our laps

I don't want Pudge or Bench as a backup. I just want someone to come in who isn't a blackhole in the lineup give Treanor a run for his money.

That can't be right.

71% CS just seems wrong...I'm not doubting you personally, butI think you should check that...it's hard to be believe 71% of all stolen base attempts failed. :mischief2 ?????????

They need someone that can hit his way out of a paper bag and Treanor can't do it. The Marlins have no excuse not to bring in someone to compete with Treanor.

Such as???? You're not going to bring up Alomar again I hope.

name someone who would soundly beat him out of a job that is relatively enough inexpensive and ill agree...i dont know...i just think we are fine the way we are...lets put it this way...centerfield and bullpen are far more important on the list of priorities...

wouldnt it be he has thrown out 65% of runners while the league average is to get a steal 71% of the time?...because im pretty sure he has one of the better arms in the league at throwing out potential runners
