Posted March 4, 200718 yr Florida Teams Talking Trade? Here's a rumor I missed from Jayson Stark's column on Friday. Stark notes: "Despite talk of the Marlins and Devil Rays reviving their long-rumored deal involving Rocco Baldelli, Florida actually appears to be more focused on the younger (and cheaper) B.J. Upton and Elijah Dukes as center field possibilities." That makes sense, but what would Florida give up at this point? Scott Olsen has to be off-limits. Josh Johnson is hurting. Anibal Sanchez's shoulder inflammation has died down, but he's still a risk. Ricky Nolasco might be reasonable, though it would chip away at the team's strength. Nolasco for Dukes seems fair. Nolasco has maybe a 20% chance at becoming a star, while Dukes hovers around 40-50% (based on BP's Stars and Scrubs charts). Dukes's off the field stuff would even out the trade. Meanwhile, Peter Gammons wrote on February 28th: "[The Marlins] are not trading any of their good young pitchers to fill center field. They know every good team has flaws, and it's a lot more difficult to get by with a pitching hole than with a center fielder like Eric Reed who, at worst, runs down balls." some interesting perspectives there...especially from Gammons.
March 4, 200718 yr Yeah...but I'll eat my hat if it's Reed in center. If we don't fill it from outside, Reggie's getting the nod...we all know this.

March 4, 200718 yr Right now I cant see us trading Nolasco. Cmon we already have 2 ailing arms. Trading Nolasco would be devastating. Our rotation could potentially be god awful by trading him.

March 4, 200718 yr I want Baldelli personally and I think everyone here agree's, but if I were to choose between Dukes and Upton, I'd take Upton.

March 4, 200718 yr Upton and Dukes would look very nice out there and yeah I would do Nolasco for Dukes

March 4, 200718 yr Right now with Mitre, Johnson, Tankersley, West, Kensing and Martinez either rehabbing, shut down or recovering from surgery, not to mention Sanchez' potentially troublesome shoulder, I don't see how anyone can suggest Nolasco is going anywhere. West hurts because as one of the golden boys his possible injury diminishes at least marginally the value of all the members of his draft class. Conceivably you could be looking at a starting rotation of Willis (L), Nolasco ®, Olsen (L), Garcia ® and fillinthblank (maybe Gregg or Pinto). If that happens you have cannibalized your relief corps of two, maybe three potential back of the pen guys (and that's keeping your fingers crossed that Tankersley is okay). At the very least Mitre and Sanchez have to show conclusively they are healthy and able to productively take a spot in the rotation before you could even think about trading Nolasco. The one thing we've seen so far this spring (and admittedly it's early) is how far Volstad and company are from being major league ready. Their real value to the organization won't be known until the off-season at the earliest when other GMs decide for themselves what their worth is if Beinfest makes them available. In the meantime, the only real question regarding Dukes and Upton is who is the bigger liability to whatever team they play for. It's been almost two months since Dukes has been arrested, he's way overdue, and even if he makes it through spring training without imploding wait until he's on the road with temptation after temptation offered up to him in every town from NYC to LA. Just a matter of time and the clock is tick, tick, ticking. As for Upton, I'm not going there, I'll keep my thoughts to myself. I think everyone understands the dog and pony show Tampa is putting on with Upton. Personally I think it's really unfair to him. So tomorrow morning maybe I'll wake up and Nolasco will be a Ray or pitching somewhere else but I doubt it. I'm prepared to be proven wrong on all my statements above, not by someone telling me I'm wrong, but by the play or circumstances that unfold around the players mentioned above. Until then I'm comfortable I'm in the right.
March 5, 200718 yr Yeah...but I'll eat my hat if it's Reed in center. If we don't fill it from outside, Reggie's getting the nod...we all know this. Because Reggie is any better than Eric Reed? In fact, I'd rather Reed start. He's consistently hit .300 at every minor-league level, and I'm still holding out he can translate that to the majors, at least against right-handed pitching.

In the minds of the men upstairs he is. Reed hasn't hit a ball out of the infield in 2 years. We're all hoping Eric learned how to hit major league pitching, but he looks terrible out there, and without the random 500 foot homers in Cincy.

Umm, I hate Reggie, but I realize he's likely the prohibitive favorite to start in center. Aside from Ramp's constant assertions that Beinfest and Co. just gush over him, I witnessed in person and elated Beinfest (following Reggie's HR off Clemens) pick up his cell-phone and yell into it "I told you so." So, yeah, he's going to be the guy. If I had to list the order of players I'd like to see out there (all assuming normal springs, no train wrecks, no OMGNunez's). Borchard Reed Sanchez Ross Reggie I like Borchard because he gives us the best combination of capable defense and offense (relative to the group, not the major leagues), I like Reed because he can run it down and if he proves in the spring he could hit at least .220 over the course of the season, he'll be better than a lot on that list. Sanchez glove never was great and his arm isn't anything to write home about, and I'm not a tremendous fan of an empty .300 hitter reshuffling the top of the lineup because we'll try to force speed to the top. Ross and Reggie, I'm not sold on either's ability to consistently hit right-handed pitching, and given the amount of quality right handed pitching in our division, that looks worrisome to me...plus, when Reggie's going bad, he lets it affect all aspects of his game.
March 5, 200718 yr If this trade was going to happen, it was a month ago. Nolasco won't be moved with the injuries piling up like this.

Alright so according to your list you would rather have someone who has played 26 total games in CF and is a career .206 hitter and .648ops and someone who cant hit the ball to the outfield over someone who his a career .296 hitter and can steal bases. That makes alot of sense.
