Beer is my friend.

Featured Replies

So I found a new home brew store and it blew away the one I used to go to. The guy has a computer program that can give you recipes for any type of beer and he will measure it all instead of getting it in a box.

I bought all the ingredients for my molassase stout beer that I will send in to the sam adams contest.

I added almost 13 pounds of malts to it, which is ALOT more than normal. The guy at the store called the beer I was making a monster. It should easily be over 8% alc. We'll see how it turns out...

I also picked up the ingredients for a wiezenbock, which will be my first wheat beer. This one should be around 6% per the guy at the store.

On a side note I asked him about Westverletern 12, and he said he has had it a few times and, "lives up to the hype".

I recently made a promise that I'll stop drinking beer for two months so I can get in better shape to play for this ametour soccer team. I don't know if I'll be able to hold up.... :\

Interesting call with the Brahma. I was working in St Pete a year ago for two weeks and they were pushing the hell out of Brahma, it was alright but I wouldnt go out of my way looking for it. I also just saw that Publix now has Leinenkugel Honey Weiss, which is waaaaaaaaaay too sweet but just found it interesting that they are not carrying three of their beers. Not sure if its due to popular demand or if Miller has decided to push it a bit more.

Ive been saying Id finish my Paulaner Hefe for the last two weeks but Ive had a ridiculous sore throat and still havent gotten to it .... (sad face here)

Right on. Send me some down here, I'll write a review. Although I don't like the word "molasseses" in my beer, doesn't sound appealing, but I'm willing to trust you on this one. Send it down here, I'll pay for shipping.

It will be ready in about 3 weeks. I'll send you a bottle of each if you want?

The Molassess stout is about 7%. The original one I made was over 8% but it was very sweet. I didnt add as much molassess to this batch.

Cool man, let me know. I'm not drinking until after Halloween anyways, so that works out well.

Nah, I'm trying to get to that next level of fitness. I want to get my BF down to single digit %, the only way I can shed these last few pounds I have to go was to give up beer and anything white for October.

I'm close and I am probably there already, won't know till this Saturday when I weigh myself for the first time in a month. Look forward to partying my ass off on Halloween though when I break it.

Make it happen

Oh it's on. I just got two more friends to join me out there and I'm crashing at my friend's house. :cheers

  • 3 weeks later...

This thread definitely needs a bump. I started reading it again because I'm thinking about brewing my own beer once the spring semester rolls around.

I started reading alot of the older entries before i started following this thread and realized how big a fan of Dogfish Head Yankeefan is. I just recently split a 24 case of their 90 Minute IPA with a friend. A couple of weeks ago, the pub on campus held their monthly 'Beer School.' For basically nothing, you get to come in on a Friday afternoon and sample a variety of beers offered by a particular brewery as they try to instruct you on how to pair their beers with the right food. September had guys from Harpoon come in, but October was quite a treat. They had the founder of Dogfish Head drop by. We got to sample the 90 Minute IPA, Midas Touch, Indian Brown Ale, and Pangaea. All were very good. They also made a special batch of their 90 Minute IPA on site where they run their bottled 90 Minute IPA through a filter to add even more hops to it. I had never tried Dogfish Head beers before, but I've become quite a fan since.

Also, Godfather, that PRL place sounds amazing. When I come back to South Florida for the holidays, I may have to make the trek up there.

Right on, I hope so! Let me know when you make it down this way, you can come have a beer with me and talk David Milch. :thumbup

Sam Calagione is a beer brewing legend. There's an awesome interview with him written by recently departed beer God Michael Jackson you can read here.

The guy was the man when he came and spoke. He definitely has this aura to him where, after hearing him talk beer for about 2 hours, you feel compelled to declare your allegiance to Dogfish Head and drink nothing else. His wife went to my school, so they definitely gave us a red carpet treatment. He's also incredibly down to earth as well. He dropped by all of the tables and spoke to each of us for a bit in addition to a normal Q/A session after each beer and course were served. I'll try to give you a breakdown of the night:

1) 90 Minute IPA paired with Bleu Cheese and Crackers. (For this, we were each given a bottle of their normal 90 Minute IPA and a pitcher for the table of the specially brewed 90 Minute IPA batch they made on site. They tasted like two completely different beers. I'm a big fan of the normal 90 Minute IPA, but the special batch was out of this world.)

2) Midas Touch paired with Ginger Fried Rice. (Normally, I'm not a fan of honey in my beer, but this one is simply great.)

3) Pagaea (http://www.dogfish.com/brewings/Occasional_Rarities/Pangaea/20/index.htm) paired with Lamb Vindaloo. (Don't know if you've tried this one Yankee fan, but it was also very good)

4) Indian Brown Ale paired with Choclate Truffles (Perfect way to cap off an amazing meal)

3) Pagaea (http://www.dogfish.com/brewings/Occasional_Rarities/Pangaea/20/index.htm) paired with Lamb Vindaloo. (Don't know if you've tried this one Yankee fan, but it was also very good)

Pangaea? I haven't even seen it! Sounds good...

What did you think of the Midas Touch? Interesting, right? Have you ever had mead? To me, it tasted like a weird blend of a mead and a Reisling more than a beer. Still, it was enjoyable.

I really like the Midas Touch. I've never had mead before, but it certainly didn't taste like any beer I've ever had. As you said, interesting yet enjoyable is probably the best way to describe it.
