Posted March 18, 200718 yr If Sanchez wins the CF spot, should Hermida be the opening day starter in right? I want a simple yes or no.
March 18, 200718 yr Things aren't always that simple. I wish you would have at least put this in the context of what I posted this morning, but that's your choice.

Well even strictly on past and current performance, I think if Sanchez wins the CF job, which looks highly likely, that Borchard deserves a roster spot over Hermida. Based on that and that alone is why he should not be there. If he makes the roster and Borchard does not, I will be pissed off. I put it in context just a little bit but its still a straightforward question as Sanchez appears to be the front runner right now.
March 18, 200718 yr Of course.  Besides who else are you going to put out there? We don't have a glut of talented outfielders last time I checked.  I'm a big Borch supporter for CF but there's no way I'd start him over Hermida. Not at this point anyway.

Borchard is a career .209 hitter- Hermida has more skills than Borchard has ever dreamed about.

Well, he totally dominated the minors in 2005, and he was hurt all of last season. He gets the benefit of the doubt, if nothing else.

Hermida's career batting average in the minors is .283, Borchard's is .272. While I cannot argue that Hermida had the better year in the minors in 2005 when he hit .293, Borchard had a pretty damn good year too as he hit .263 for the Charlotte Knights.

March 18, 200718 yr I see him starting in RF on Opening day, they need to put him out there to show him that we believe in him. He's the same guy he was a couple years ago, just had a bad season last year.Guy has one of the sweetest swings on this club.
March 18, 200718 yr uh-oh....OMGBorchard. im fine with him getting the CF AB vs RHP but to start him in favor of one of the most talented young hitters in the game is silly
March 18, 200718 yr Jeremy Hermida was #1 on a lot of lists for predictions of rookie of the year winners for '06. You don't demote that kind of talent after one season. Especially when he had injury issues.
March 18, 200718 yr Wasnt Borchard a first fiund pick for the White sox like Hermida. I'm pretty sure he was a highly touted rookie prospect back in the day.
March 18, 200718 yr yep, he was. hermida is younger and played his first season hurt so he should get the spot. there's a much lower chance of jobo hitting his ceiling than jeremy at this point.
March 18, 200718 yr The thing I love about this is that it disregards age, pedigree or caveats that affected the previous year's performance. Hermida's only 23, has proven that he can hang at this level (see his '05 performance since so many are jumping on the Alex Sanchez "career" bandwagon). Besides, name me one player who has a legit long-term future with this club that Hermida is blocking
March 18, 200718 yr Hermida should be our Opening Day RF  Its not like we have a storage bin with great outfielders in the basement at Dolphins Stadium.  If he starts the season 4-70 then yeah, it's time to go "WTF" and start looking at other short term options till he gets his head straight.  Hermida is slightly overrated IMO but he's clearly our RF'r right now.
March 18, 200718 yr The season really needs to start already. These threads are getting tedious. Jeremy will be fine. He should start. In the long run he'll probably turn out to have a better career than Willingham. He can actually play defense. He runs well. He hits and hits for power. I read absolutely nothing into spring training. I do think that he may have mentally suffered from being the underachieving rookie on last year's team of full of overacheiving rookies. Just let him hit .270 in April and he'll be fine.
