March 30, 200718 yr You scared the crap out of me. My first thought was Dontrelle was hurt (My eyes missed "home" opener).
March 30, 200718 yr I have absolutly no problem with Mitre and I think he will be a valuable commodity this year be it coming from the pen or starting
March 30, 200718 yr Author who's the 5th starter???? Nolasco... but because of off days, I dont know when they would even need him to pitch.

March 30, 200718 yr A little surprising. But with the off day it really isn't that big a deal. Actually I thought maybe one of the guys would be sent to AAA just to get the starts in until we needed the 5th starter. In any case, thanks for the update.
March 30, 200718 yr Nolasco should get the start. ==================================== http://florida.marlins.mlb.com/content/pri...30/c1871011.jsp Marlins shake up rotation 03/30/2007 4:15 PM ET By Joe Frisaro / MLB.com PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. -- The Marlins are shaking up their rotation in a move that gives manager Fredi Gonzalez more bullpen flexibility. Barring something unforeseen, Sergio Mitre will now start the Marlins home opener on April 6 against the Phillies, while Ricky Nolasco moves temporarily into the bullpen. Initially, Nolasco was tabbed the No. 4 starter, with Mitre falling in line to make his first start on April 10 against the Brewers. An April 5 off-day enables the club to go with a four-man rotation until April 10. Mitre, who is starting the exhibition finale on Saturday against the Reds in Dayton, Ohio, will remain in line to start the home opener. Nolasco, who threw an inning of scoreless relief on Friday while facing the Mets, will be available for long relief beginning Opening Day on Monday at Washington. "Nolasco gives us flexibility in the bullpen," Gonzalez said. Nolasco has thrown relief in the past, and Mitre is bouncing back from a shoulder problem that caused him to miss most of 2006. The Marlins are carrying 12 pitchers, and Nolasco now will be used in long relief. His last available date to relieve is April 7, which would be his last day to throw before his first start. "I understand it's the best thing to do for the team," Nolasco said. Both Nolasco and Mitre have enjoyed strong springs. Nolasco threw 15 1/3 innings this spring, with a 3.52 ERA. Mitre has thrown nine scoreless innings in three spring starts. This story was not subject to the approval of Major League Baseball or its clubs.
March 30, 200718 yr really have to wonder if Mitre has advanced his pitches some...added velocity? movement? control? command? cleaned mechanics? Something is different and I like it. With Nolasco in the pen (not permanent?) this group has the chance to be anywhere from average to good...far cry from last season.
March 30, 200718 yr You scared the crap out of me. My first thought was Dontrelle was hurt (My eyes missed "home" opener). Maybe I'm missing something, but since this is only the home opener, shouldn't the starter just be determined by whose turn it is in the rotation? Yes, but when I read the title first I thought it said opener (Like season opener). I am a skim reader.
March 30, 200718 yr Ricky Nolasco will be moved to the bullpen for the time being I believe that if Mitre performs well enough, he will be the #5 starter, and not Ricky, when Josh is ready to come back more info when I get it I think it makes sense. This is purely a guess but I think the logic behind it is that you don't need a 5th starter for a few weeks, and everyone knows how bad Mitre can be out of the pen, while it doesn't seem to bother Nolasco. I don't think anyone will be safe when Josh comes back. Who ever is pitching poorly will probably be replaced in the rotation. Or Josh could come out of the pen himself for a while. I wouldn't read much more into it than just putting the players in the best situation to help the team succeed. Like I said purely guess work on my part.

Nolasco is my 2nd favorite pitcher on the team and I was looking forward to seeing him start. I now REALLY love the over for that game (regardless of the #).
March 30, 200718 yr makes sense.. mitre said he didnt like coming in from the pen.. so having him start, and moving nolasco to the pen is a good move for the first few games.
March 30, 200718 yr Mitre starts the home opener for a second straight year. Hopefully he doesnt have the same results as last years.

With Nolasco in the pen (not permanent?) this group has the chance to be anywhere from average to good...far cry from last season. Nolasco really adds some depth to the pen. Although I think Nolasco will be a better starter in the long run than Mitre, I think his comparative value vis a vis Mitre lies in the pen.
March 30, 200718 yr I don't mind this. Nolasco out of the pen gives us a long reliever. Have any of our other bullpen pitchers pitched more than one, maybe two innings in a game? I honestly don't know if any of them have the ability to pitch in long relief. Anyone else know the pitchers well enough to answer that? This way, if one of our starters is only able to go a few innings, Nolasco can step in and pitch a few innings. As much as I hate to think of us solely using Nolasco for "mop-up duty," we do need someone to fill that roll. Makes me think of a Brian Moehler/Matt Herges type roll. That way, we aren't using our short-inning relievers, and limiting our reliever options for the next days' game.

We're talking Nolasco in the 'pen for a week, tops. It's if/when JJ comes back this season (am I the only one who finds the absolute lack of information there startling) that we then start looking at who gets where in the rotation. And for the record, I've been suggesting Nolasco as the closer for about a year now.

Gregg has been a pretty decent spot-man with the Angels so Id assume he'll take that role here
March 31, 200718 yr How has Mitre done against the Phillies compared to Ricky? Got the stats: Ricky is 1-2 in his short career against Philly, while Mitre is 0-1 in his short career. So that is not it.

Battling back from irritation to his right biceps nerve, Johnson is on a light throwing pattern where he is playing catch every other day. Thursday was his fourth session, and he is scheduled to throw again on Saturday in Jupiter. Johnson is likely to miss at least two months. http://florida.marlins.mlb.com/news/articl...sp&c_id=fla There you go.

I read that article before and to me it shows Mitre should get it. But whatever. I guess it's how you read things, or read into things. Having Ricky available Opening Day vs the Nats for long relief is a good idea. And he will remain available through the 7th, another DTrain start. Maybe I have a little unneccesarry confidence in the starters to think we will need some long relief to start the season. Which is why I wouldn't mind seeing him in AAA to get a full start in. I think even without Ricky in the pen we have the capability to handle some long relief, just in case. But I'll bow out to the coaching staff on this one.
March 31, 200718 yr We all knew since about when Johnson's injury first came to light that the schedule broke such that the Fish only needed four (starting) pitchers at the beginning of the season. What I think this is about is keeping as many starters on schedule as possible while not sending Mitre, a recovering fifth starter to the pen for work when a) they want him on a regular schedule to protect his health as much as possible and b) you can forget this talk about long relief, Nolasco can get warmed up quickly, and pitch frequently, and "if" Julio stumbles they'll plug him in as de facto closer rather than throwing one of the kids to wolves until Tankersley is ready to be the go to guy in tight situations in what's left of the first month after he returns. The plan which appears to have been constructed is to ease the young guys, especially Owens and Lindstrom in slowly, getting their feet wet primarily in the setup role. If Julio flourishes then Nolasco gets some long relief appearances to keep his game sharp until he's needed in the rotation. It's a win-win. It's a good fit either way and makes sense.
