What do we really have ?

Featured Replies

I'm just wondering, maybe these guys aren't that special ? They may be decent players but has anything really jumped out at you from Willingham, Jacobs, Olsen, De Aza, Borchard, Uggla, etc ? Ramierz can be special if he continues to mature, and we know Miggy is something VERY special. Willis is so all-over-the-place you can't really tell.....22 wins one year and then 12 the next year. He will give you innings, but is he a # 1 or will he ever be ?

But seriously, we all love the Marlins, and want them to win, but are we really seriously believeing the'll be anything other than what they seem to be, an around .450-.500 team ? The bloom is coming off the rose for me, and I am starting to doubt if these guys will develop, as they don't seem to be progressing but regressing a bit this year.

Gimme a break

We have a very talented team when healthy. We just dont have the financial ability to field a competitive team when the injury bug hits.

Hammer is a stud.

He's decent at the plate, but his fielding is horrible. But Ramp, you are someone I respect, your opinions count with me. Give me some feedback dude.....do you really think this team, not individuals, but as a collective team will be anything more than .450-.500 year in and year out if they are kept together for 3 or 4 more years ? I am no expert, just an armchair QB here, and as I said you know more than I do, in just your right pinky. I'm looking for some in-depth thought here.

Well that could be an answer.....I like that one better than the way I was feeling. Maybe this is reaction to getting swept by the Nationals. Gawd is that awful or what ? It'll probably be the only one they get this year. :banghead

Jacobs is nothing but an average first basemen

Uggla we have seen is more than likely a one year wonder

Hanley and Miggy are special players, most likely meaning both will be out by 2010.

Willy is okay, nothing bad, nothing amazing

We dont have a center fielder and Hermida is more than likely just a injury prone outfielder.

our bench? who knows, boone is past his prime, not that he ever had one, borchard shouldnt be in the MLB.

pitching is whatever. willis is all over the place, anibal had one good year but hes done, mitre is trade bait, now we have a head case in Kim and we have 20 guys thatll have 1 save by years end

Good god man.

Someone get this man some prozac

its an opinion thread, whats yours

do u really think Willy is going to be a 8 time all star by careers end?

are you guys still drooling over dontrelle willis?

do you really think miggy is going to be a career marlin

I already said my opinion. I'm just pointing out the hilarity of your negativism.

Don't worry about things you have no control of that might or might not happen in a few years. You'll lead a much happier life.

What an annoying "fan".

Hammer's going to be a lineup linchpin for the next few years, but he is, for better or worse, the stereotype for "debut late, decline early" players. That said, I expect him to be quite effective throughout this contention window (ending in 2010).

Hanley and Cabrera are all time special.

Uggla appears to be serviceable if used in the right part of the lineup (which is not in the 2-hole) and the jury is still out on Hermida.

I'd be very surprised if we're contending for division titles with De Aza and Olivo, and the bullpen has two good arms (Owens, Tank) and a live-one (Lindstrom).

I'm not tremendously sold on the rotation as I feel it lacks a true ace, but Willis/Olsen/Sanchez are guys who would get one of the 5 spots on any team's rotation and JJ could join that group if he shows he can rebound from his injury.

I think this team has the blueprint to be very formidable if it all comes together and with them here. I'd still say to be true "dynasty" material we need a bat that can legitimately protect Miggy and probably a consistently great starter...that las part, of course, can be filled from within, but I do have my doubts.

I am a fan, I was involved with the Marlins for 3 years including their championship run, but Im realistic. The guy who started this wanted people to state what they thought and I did.

I really dont see anything special with this team, but no1 expects us to be, so thats fine. I do love the 2 bright spots with Miggy and Hanley, but its very unlikely Miggys 500th homer is going to be in a Marlin uniform.

We have an unbelievable blueprint here for success in 2008 and beyond. Hanley and Cabs have the chance to be all time greats. Dontrelle Willis is a workhorse and a pretty damn good pitcher to boot. Hammer is gonna mash for the next few years atleast. He is a tremendous hitter, with fantastic OBP and his SLG should continue to rise too.

What Hermida showed in the minors SCREAMS Shawn Green or Pau O'Neill in his prime. His season in 2005 was flat out awesome.

I expect Dan Uggla to be the next Junior Spivey but he is still a very solid 6/7 hiiter.

Not sure what we have in the catching position. I have been high on Brett Hayes since we drafted him a few years ago. He has been compared to Brad Ausmus.

I don't think De Aza is the real deal. I am hoping beyond hope that next offseason we deal a Volstad or Sinkbeil or whomever for a legit CFer.

Olsen, Anibal, Johnson all have the potential to be special as well and I think Anibal has the most promise.

We also could have a dynamic pen in the near future. Logan, Kmart, Owens, Pinto, Lindstrom is.a formidible pen.

Needless to say I'm high on our blueprint, not so much on our current GM though

When healthy, we field a team of studs. Jacobs, Uggla, and Willingham have a ton of talent, mixed with Cabrera and Ramirez that's a real solid big five. Add Hermida, De Aza, and Olivo to the mix and you certainly have a top lineup in the NL. Our pitching goes so deep through the system I'll never be worried, but when you have 3 of your 5 projected starters going into the season out, there's not much you can do. When we get healthy, this group will be MUCH better than a .500 squad.

Hammer is a stud.

I absolutely love him at the plate. But defense is another story. That's my main problem with this team. Hermida's a decent fielder and Amezaga is OK in CF. De Aza showed he could be good but he still made several rookie mistakes. Outside of that, our outfield defense is pretty attroucious. And then the IF, Uggla's has subpar deffense for a 2b's, Miggy just seems to not care out there, Jacobs is still learning first, and Olivo can't catch a ball that seriously hits his glove dead-center. Hanley's about the only one I'm not worried about, and even then he still makes a couple rookie mistakes that are frustrating.

I think hitting will come around, I think pitching will come around. I don't know about defense though.

Olivo=gone after this year probably

Jacobs=probably wont ever be anything special but who knows

Uggla=not special but could bounce back and I doubt he is as bad as he has played

Cabs=truly special X50

Hanley=truly special

Willingham=good ballplayer, should be a Fish for quite some time at LF or 1B.

De Aza=stop gap

Hermia=chance to be special, or at least Paul O'Neil

We are probably a .450-.500 team, just as predicted by Vegas before the season started. With the injuries, we'll likely be worse.

.

You can argue about the ability or potential of all the players. One thing I'll add is that Willis is a player that comes around once every generation. He's not really a #1 pitcher. He's in the top 30 in the league as far as pitching ability. But overall, for those that haven't seen as much baseball as I, my advice is to enjoy every start he makes. You may never see another player who plays the GAME with as much enthusiasm, has fun, and does have a great deal of innate athleticism and ability.

We have an incomplete team, one with injury bug all over it and one with either some serious over or under achievers.

Last years team was a surprise and I feel a lot of people thought that it would just carry over to this year. Adjustments have to be made this season by our second year players. Those of you around in 2004 will remember that Willis struggled for a while that season, he even struggles at times now. Young players either make adjustments or their gone to someone else.

The beauty of having a team this young is being able to see them make progress and project where this team will be in a year or two. The Marlins have followed a similar blueprint both times they've won the World Series, get a team young play together for a couple of seasons and add the needed pieces when the time to contend is apparant. Until the 03-05 Marlins .500 was a dream for most Marlins fans, you wished the team did well but you didn't demand this person fired or traded, released etc....

So yes .500 should be something this years team achieves but they got to get healthy, add a piece or two and lets see what they have in August.

One thing that has really stood out to me this year is the collapse in overall defense. We don't exactly have one of the top talented teams in baseball and don't have margin for error when trying to win ballgames. This possibly shows us how much we miss Perry Hill. Its one thing to lack talent, its another to lack fundamentals, and the latter is a product of bad coaching.
