I don't know if you guys can remember, but back in '05 there was a very serious rumor about Jim Thome and Billy Wagner being traded to the Red Sox for Hanley, Anibal Sanchez, Kevin Youklis, Jonathon Papelbon, and cash.

With all due respect, they never thought Howard was the future until he forced his way in...even the season when Thome got hurt and Howard tore it up, the Phillies were desperately trying to find a way to get both of them in the lineup.

 

Just to play the memory lane game, the Phillies offered Howard to the Pirates for Kris Benson and were told that wasn't enough.
