Watchmen Trial Date Set for Jan. 6

September 3, 2008

Los Angeles federal judge Gary Allen Feess has set a Jan. 6 trial date for 20th Century Fox's lawsuit over Warner Bros. Pictures' right to make a film based on the graphic novel Watchmen.

Variety says the judge set the date Tuesday during a meeting between attorneys, setting the stage for discovery and deposition proceedings during the rest of this year. Warner Bros. has not backed off March 6 as the opening for Watchmen, directed by Zack Snyder.

Feess indicated Tuesday that the case was not suitable for preliminary injunction and that the issues were too complex to be resolved on an interim basis. The judge had already indicated that he wants the case to move quickly, asking the two parties previously for expedited discovery.

Two weeks ago, Feess denied Warner's motion to dismiss the suit, which alleges that Fox retained distribution rights to the graphic novel through a 1991 claim. Fox has asserted it retains the rights since producer Admin Gordon's option to acquire Fox's remaining interest in Watchmen was never exercised, thereby leaving Fox with its rights under a 1994 turnaround agreement.

Bump,

March 6 release date. :thumbup

I really hope this does well. Would be a shame to see one of the great pieces of modern American fiction suck on the big screen.

Never read the graphic novel, but absolutely loved the movie, sure it had some flaws but man I was glued to the screen for the almost 3 hours the movie runs. Loved the character Rorschach, I think he is the reason I liked the movie so much.

Hands down, no question THE BEST COMIC MOVIE EVER! If you haven't read Alan and Dave's masterpiece, go buy it. Well worth the cash.

It was pretty damn good. Far closer to the comic than I expected it to be. I loved the plot twist at the end, but I'm still a bit perturbed by what they did after it. Won't go into details beyond that. But otherwise, it was good.

Just don't take young children to see it. :mischief

eh?

Moore and Gibbons are both English. I don't know about Gibbons, but Moore is from Northampton. The confusion is common since it was published by an American company (DC).

this movie kicks ass.

saw it last nite and i havent ever heard of Watchmen (i didnt know there was a comic book or anything)

but ya my friend made me see it and it was really really good.

Makes you think and you just dont wanna look away.

Rorshach is awesome btw.

Ok I'm new to this universe and I have a question.

Why is it called watchmen? I always though it's because these were superheroes that watched the city. After seeing the trailer, there are a lot of refference to clocks and gears if clocks. I know this might just be a pun, but does watchmen have anything to do with...

watches?

The term "Who Watches the Watchmen?" which is a loose adaptation of a Latin phrase, Quis custodiet ipsos custodes? In the anti-adventurer riots of the mid-1970s in the Watchmen universe, it's common graffiti.

And Jon Osterman trained to be a watchmaker like his father before his father gave up the trade in the face of nuclear physics. That led to him becoming Doctor Manhattan.

And the bloodstain on The Comedian's smiley face button is common imagery. It appears to mirror the setting of the Doomsday Clock at the beginning of the story, at 5 minutes before Midnight. Hence, like a stuck watch.
