August 2, 200718 yr I'm a mets fan but I cannot deny what he has done this year. The only way he doesnt get it is if the Marlins finish under .500.

August 2, 200718 yr He can still win it if the team finishes under .500, A-Rod did. Yeah im hoping for that to happen again here. I really couldnt see a Marlins player winning the MVP, esp. this year, but hopefully it does. Miguel definitely deserves it.
August 2, 200718 yr I'm a mets fan but I cannot deny what he has done this year. The only way he doesnt get it is if the Marlins finish under .500. if the marlins finish over .500, miggy and hanley need to finish 1,2 in the mvp voting. assuming they both continue to be their god-like selves, there is just no other way. unless braun finishes the season at the pace he is on now or someone else on a playoff team just puts up incredible numbers in the last 2 months. but who else dominates the opposition like these two have? obviously thats a biased statement. but i think its probably true. they could finish 1,2 in the batting race. if this team somehow wins 82+ games and hanram and cabs offensively just own everybody till the end of the year, they're clearly the 2 best players in the nl.
August 2, 200718 yr whew, a Mets fan has validated Cabs for us! All we need now is a Phillies fan and then we are going to the world series!
August 2, 200718 yr he may very well be, but there's absolutely no chance that he actually wins it...
August 2, 200718 yr Who are the contenders right now for NL MVP? Miggy definitely.....Prince has been slumping up until tonight's 3 run HR it seems where as Miguel has blew up. I think Reyes definitely is in contention since how important he is to that team on both ends. The defense is what might hurt Cabs chances the most I say. Edit: Forgot to mention Rollins. He's doing well on all sides it seems. Howard is killing it recently at the plate too. Should be interesting. Miggy leading the NL in AVG after tonight.
August 2, 200718 yr Author Uhhhhh... what are you guys talking about? MVP = Most valuable phatman jk. :brigginbounce

August 2, 200718 yr I believe that Miggy has as good of a chance as any of the other position players in the NL right now. However, don't forget that the MVP award is open to pitchers as well. Right now, San Diego has a couple of pitchers in Chris Young and Jake Peavy who are down right dealin'. Plus they're doing that with the pressure of being in a tight playoff race. I don't think it's necessary for your team to make the playoffs in order to win the MVP, but it sure doesn't hurt.
August 2, 200718 yr I'd rather have Cabrera on my team in a heartbeat, but if I'd have to cast an honest vote: Prince Fielder Meh. The home run total is impressive, especially considering where in his career he is but since the All-Star break, he hasn't made too much noise.

I made a comment at the All-Star break that if Cabrera cuts down on the strikeouts, he will bat .350 in the 2nd half. Regarding MVP, I think if 2 players are having similarly great seasons, you give the edge to the player who's on the playoff team (ex: Sammy Sosa beating Mark McGwire in '98). But if Miggy keeps up his torrid pace, and ends up with significantly better overall numbers than the rest of the bunch, he's got to be considered. Voters, however, will most likely pick the best player on a playoff-contender. That being said, Cabrera may not win MVP, but if he keeps it up, he'll be NL Offensive Player of the Year. Can someone post Cabrera's VORP stat? ETA: Who was that annoying girl calling Cabrera's home run last night? I missed the first 4 innings of the game, got home in time to see Cabs in the 5th, and heard her shrieking.

August 2, 200718 yr Thanks Crimson. Wow, Miggy has a higher VORP than A-Rod? :o Do you have to be a member of Baseball Prospectus to get these stats? Not for VORP. You can get that just by clicking on the Statistics tab on Baseball Prospectus' home page, and then clicking on "VORP for Position Players." You have to be a member, I believe, to filter the stats and sort them, but if you just want to see the order it's free.
August 2, 200718 yr I don't know if anyone else has been a standout from the NL this year other than him and Prince. I think Prince might lose it if the Brewers fall to the Cubs in the standings. Chase Utley comes to mind as well.

Cabrera only recently got the highest VORP (Actually I think it was last nights game that put him over hanley) thanks to his hawt hawt hawt streak. A-Rod was leading for awhile, then Mags, then Shadez, and now Cabs.
