August 22, 200718 yr An announcer being a homer really isn't a bad thing. Re: Michael Kay. I dont think it gets any worse than Rich Waltz anywhere in baseball. Most here didnt like him when he started and NOTHING has changed with him. He says the DUMBEST things on a near constant basis and then lectures about things like Curt Flood as if he is the all knowing baseball master and knows that nobody else on Earth could know who that is. And the whole yelling WHHHHOOOOOOOOAAAAAAA thing anytime there is a popup that requires an infielder to move his feet or a throw to first that forces Jacobs to reach a little further than usual gets a bit (very) annoying. PS: When somebody asks on Tuesdays what determines if you are a Cubs fan or White Sox fan and Rich responds with "FANTASTIC QUESTION!!!!!" it only makes him suck two dumbass words more.
August 22, 200718 yr Agreed, Rich is blah. He seems wierd and uncomfortable to me. Doesn't have that smooth flow the way someone like Len Kasper or Boog does. Tommy's good even if he's getting a little crotchety. I don't think he's any more a homer than any other teams' color guys are. I like Roxy on the radio actually. Roxy & Tommy would be my duo right now.

August 22, 200718 yr Eh, count me in the minority. Rich's game calls sound like a bad video game track and Tommy's color is blah. They're not terrible, but I wouldn't qualify them as good. At least they interact well. I will say this though, the lack of national love for Miggy and Hanley has to be at least partially attributed to them as the two get far more excited for Uggla and Amezaga on a day to day and play to play basis. "You know Rich, I just love how Amezaga TURNS THIS LINEUP OVER...oh yeah, Hanley hit another homerun, but HIS NAME IS not DAN UGGLA!!" Yes, it's Rich and Tommy's fault. That's why Amezaga gets all the national attention and not Miggie. Do yourself a favor and watch any team with a young super-star. Take a look at the Mets, the Rockies, heck even the Nationals with Zimmerman. Those guys LOVE their super-stars. They remind you incessantly about what wonderful things he's done during the game. If they're having a bad day, they remind you about what they've done yesterday or the day before. In essence, they try to get the fan overly excited about the player. That excitement becomes belief in the player's ability, which turns into extreme credibility for the player. And if you don't believe an announcer plays a huge role in player credibility with the casual fan, you're sorely mistaken.

August 22, 200718 yr Roxy was looking for a west coast gig because he also does California Basketball and reports for California Football.

"You know Rich, I just love how Amezaga TURNS THIS LINEUP OVER...oh yeah, Hanley hit another homerun, but HIS NAME IS not DAN UGGLA!!" Amezaga gets the love he gets because he breaks the conventional thought about what a baseball player should look like. Broadcasters and fans in general have a sweet spot in their hearts for the little guys. I think you're overexaggerating the amount of love Uggla gets compared to Ramirez. Waltz and Hutton are always talking about just how good Hanley. For anyone who says otherwise, Tommy Hutton is a homer. He almost killed several kittens with baby skulls on Sunday after the two error play. The displeasure in his voice at time this year has reached levels not seen in a long time. Not saying homerism isn't a bad thing. Some of it is good. After all, most of the people who watch regular season baseball on the regional networks are fans of the team. But going overboard is possible as is the case with the ChiSox announcers, Michael Kay and Chip Caray. FTR, I like Waltz and Hutton. Tommy is Tommy. His weekly references to his pot smoking days > * Waltz has a deep understanding of baseball history. They have their comedic moments during the broadcasts. There is only so much analysis of a hanging curveball or an opposite field one can do over the 150 or so games broadcast during the season. Especially for most of us who watch a good portion of these games.
August 22, 200718 yr For Rich & Tommy to do 150 telecasts a year.....I think they do an excellent job. Same goes for DVH & Roxy on radio. Marlins have excellent broadcasters. If you want a boring broadcast, tune in the Cardinals on either radio or television........snorefest STL.
August 22, 200718 yr I can't believe multiple people would commend the Seattle team. Those guys are absolutely horrid. The broadcasts I've seen have been downright putrid. They have an old guy doing the pbp in the early innings and then without warning or notice they change to an entirely new team in the middle of games. Ugh. The best play by play guy that I've heard for a local broadcast is Matt Williams for Arizona. Guy is phenomenal. I don't care about color guys being homers for their own local broadcast. I just ask they know a little bit about the opposing team other than conventional thought and the 5 minutes they've spent thumbing through the press guide. Do your homework, it definitely shows in a big way to people.
August 22, 200718 yr Rumor suggests that Rich won't be back next season That's a shame.....this would be the 4th time we've lost someone. I guess I can't blame them, who wants to do games in front of 2,000 a night.
August 22, 200718 yr I have no problems with Rich or Tommy, especially after having to listen to other teams' announce crews on MLB.TV. I can see how Rich could be an acquired taste, but I like the energy and enthusiasm he brings. And Tommy's the grizzled veteran who knows a lot about the game, and I love it when he gets ticked off.
August 22, 200718 yr Rumor suggests that Rich won't be back next season When does Len's contract with the Cubs end? :mis2

August 22, 200718 yr I would love them to send Tommy packing too. I'm really starting to dislike him. I guess he's getting old.

August 22, 200718 yr Leave it up to good ole Ramp to add a rumor to a thread about broadcasters. That's classic Ramp. :ramp
August 22, 200718 yr You gotta give these guys credit, they really have to endure a really painful, long season covering the Fish. I'm surprised they do not freak out more often.
August 24, 200718 yr Tommy Hutton a homer? for who he has done Yankee games, and I never heard anyone calling him a homer in NY? and I think he has worked elswhere so since he never played here how is he a homer? Waltz and Dave.........van Boring!!!!! snoozefest.....
