The Marlins' odds of re-signing second baseman Luis Castillo as a prospective free agent just got longer.

 

Like teammates Rodriguez and Miguel Cabrera, Castillo has retained hard-driving agent Scott Boras.

 

Adam Katz was Castillo's agent until the switch, which came near the end of the regular season. Katz also lost Cabrera to Boras in August.

 

Castillo, who is making $4.85 million this season as the second-highest-paid Marlin, could seek a three-year deal in the $20 million range this winter. The Marlins are unlikely to meet that asking price.

Personally, considering the glut of free agents available in 2004, I don't see a whole lot of teams willing to shell out $20 million over three years to Luis. I love him, but it's highly unlikely.

 

I want to say one other thing and I hope it's not miscontrued. I don't care who plays second base next year as long as we're in the playoffs. I've had it up to here with hero-worship (Floyd, Wilson, Dempster, Johnson, ad nauseum), if there's one thing we've learned this year, it's not about the person, its all about production. Luis is a terrific part of the Marlins success and I'd hate to see him leave for a whole lot of good reasons, but if he must I have no doubt Admin Beinfest will offer up an alternative.

You are right on the money.

 

IMO the MLB wasn't too sure of itself over the last 15-20 years when it came to confronting the union b/c there wasn't any evidence out there to suggest that their ideas would work.

 

I think with the NFL's incredible success with it's cap (and to a lesser extent the NBA) the end is near for the MLBPA. And not a second too soon.

Its about damn time! Look spending money like crazy is fine, but not when there are 10 teams or so that will never sniff the post seasons with the way things are structured right now(Marlins, Angels, A's, Twins have all spent their money wisely and it has rewarded them with postseason apperances).

 

 

 

 

Its about time MLB grew a sac and approached the Players union about putting in a cap. The Yankees will remain competitive AND appear in the postseason for the next twenty years or more if the playing field doesn't get evened up. Now coming from a Yankees fan thats hard to say, but even I'm getting sick of them being in it every year!!

I've always been confused about why Boras is vilified. He does his job and does it well. Players deserved to be fairly compensated. The market determines what is fair.

 

Blame those that stand in the way of a salary cap, i.e. the players themselves.

if Castillo wants 7 mill per season, & his agent is misguided enough to convince him he's worth that much, then by all means, someone go pay him. i'd rather work on keeping guys like Lowell if they need to shell out 7 million per.

Stay with this team, get less money, but you have to go back to the playoffs again next year.

The Braves did not win the division in 1994. Montreal did. But since it was a strike-shortened season and there were no playoffs that year, the Brave fans and the media carefully script their words to say that they have "made it to 12 consecutive post seasons". Most people then assume it was 12 straight years. I contend that they have won 9 straight division titles.

 

I really don't care that much until they start comparing them to great dynasties, both within and outside of baseball, using the 12 straight year thing. Then it annoys me no end!! :banghead
