When do we become the Miami Marlins?

Featured Replies

Assuming the stadium deal fnishes and they break ground in June or July on the new ballpark, would we wait until our first year in the new park (2011 or possibly 2012) to rename ourselves the Miami Marlins, or would we get a head start and plan the name and logo change for 2009 or 2010?

Probably 2011. They could do it after this season if they wanted to, but the agreement only states that they must be the Miami Marlins by the completion date, which would be the first game of the 2011 season.

It's believed to be 2011. Also, it looks like they won't break ground until late in the year, probably October or November.

The agreement states that it will happen "at some time" prior to the team playing there. IMO, if all goes well with the construction agreement, the team will change their name after this season. That construction agreement is still an obstacle to be overcome. The Marlins need to find a contractor that will build a stadium for the agreed upon amount. And since the franchise is on the hook for cost over-runs, that may not be a slam dunk.

I thought the same thing when I first heard the name change.

Miami has the Marlins, the greatest baseball team!

They hit the ball from pole to pole like noone's ever seen!

Hits in the air, hits on the ground, they're always on the run!

Cause when you say Miami, you're talking champions!

And you all know the chorus...

The reason I ask is because I would think it would really hurt merchandise sales if people knew that it would be out of date in a couple years. I don't want to buy a brand new hat with an F on it only to know that the next year it would be an M. I think they should probably jump the gun and do it next year.

Really? I am trying to get in all the merch I can leading up to the change. To have these championship banners, cups, lights, mouse pads, flags, numerous hats, jerseys and other stuff to show my kids down the line of the Florida Marlins. Plus, everyone loves Retro/Throwback stuff.

Also, I should add that I need to buy a new hat every year due to overuse.
