You're telling me they just put 10 million dollars into a group of dancing fat guys instead of putting it into a fat guy that OPS'd 966?

Because these are totally related expenses. :thumbup

these threads are getting older faster than pedro martinez

:thumbup

hey and it works on two levels...

the tirelessly bashing of loria for thinking outside the box

and the fact that pedro martinez got hurt...not that i would wish an injury on anyone...but its more tolerable when its a mutt in pain...right starbrownies?!?!?!?!

Refusing to spend money on the team when you are making it hand over fist is "thinking outside the box"?

so you dont think the 300 or 400 million he is on the hook for with the stadium isnt spending money?

and i mean the mermaids and manatees and various other ideas he has implemented...

loria gets trashed on wayyyyyyyy too much...consider this...guess what team has the richest owner in baseball?

the twinkies...yeah...you know...the same team who traded santana and didnt resign hunter and etc. etc. etc....and oh yeah...they are getting public money for their new stadium too

Just becuase Old Man P is an awful owner doesnt mean that Loria isnt. Because Loria is an awful owner. And Loria isnt on the hook for $400 million for the new stadium. He is on the "hook" for $150ish million. That will come from loans and rent payments over a prolonged period of time. His up front money is relatively minuscule, considering how much money he has made from the team and pocketed.

And at least Pohlard has the "senile" defense working for him. Loria is young but has he has shown his entire tenure as an owner in MLB, he is a carpetbagger who will minimize the outflow to maximize the inflow as much as possible. He received the Marlins for essentially nothing, with being able to write off expenses from the purchase of the club over the first few years, the sale of the Expos, and the loan that was forgiven by MLB. The franchise has also doubled in value since he purchased it. Yet he still shows, as he has for a decade now, that he has no intention of ever spending money on the team no matter how much is coming in, and he is not above lying and cooking the books to get away with it. Even Fehr alluded to the fact that Loria isnt putting anywhere near as much money into the team as he could be.

same thread rehashed 500 times.

ding ding...im just tired of the loria bashing more than anything else...is he a great owner? no...i dont think anyone is trying to defend him on that...but is he as bad as spike here thinks? hell no

No actually Spike your consecutive streak for being wrong continues. I marvel at your ability to be wrong so often. Other men, perhaps even better men have tried and failed, at least there's one thing you're good at. no one has ever been as wrong and misinformed for so long so often.

Try reading the deal Spike. If you can. You're off by at minimum a factor of two. You know of course the Marlins are contractually obligated to not just rent a few parking spaces in the parking garages adjoining the new stadium, save 600 for related uses, they have to rent at between $10.50 and almost $12 a piece every parking space for every game for 30 years. Think of it this way you'll be dead and the Marlins will still be paying for that parking lot. Do the math. Oh mistake, math isn't your long suit. So you don't get confused trying to figure out where the commas go, that adds up to a shade over $160 million just in payments for the garage, with the franchise as collateral.

Then's there's rent payments, funding contingency hold backs, maintenance on the stadium, god the list is endless.

Spike and Dave Hyde have something in common, no respect for truth. Be warned. reading the trash in the posts previous can be detrimental to your health.

Well, I think Admin Beinfest is a genius. So at least we have 1 good thing going for us, in that front office.

I'm not a big fan of Loria...and I hate Samson. Samson really is irrelevant...what does he do, again? Sprint in the Iron Man contests?

I am willing to give Loria a chance not to spend money on the team when the stadium opens before I get mad at him for not doing it. He spent plenty in '05 and I had plenty of peace and quiet at the stadium that year, so I can't blame him for what happened in '06. Most of the problems I have with this franchise aren't anything I can really directly blame on Jeffrey Loria. I met him at the Bellagio in Vegas a couple months ago, and talked to the guy for about an hour. He was very friendly, and is very knowledgeable about the game. Maybe I'm stupid, but I really believe that he wants to win. Aside from that, he picked up me and my friends' tab, which he asked me to put toward season ticket renewal. :thumbup

nice story dude! :thumbup

So what your saying is Loria is putting up very little up front...exactly what I said...so he can stick the rest on the guy who he sells the team to.

Lets say maintenance and upkeep was $1.5 million a year. Thats respectable, maybe a shade over or under. I am not sure, to be honest, as I extrapolated that figure from a newer 11,000 seat MiLB park and what it costs to operate the stadium per year. The per year payment for that parking garage you speak of and Loria's contribution is roughly $10.5 million combined(thats a tad over), so basically all major costs, per year, for the new stadium Loria basically had handed to him, is $12 million. That will be offset easily by ticket/luxury box sales alone, if the way new attendance flows at new stadiums, is any indication. Plus alot more. I really dont get what point your trying to make. A MLB club can make back the expenses on a loan on a yearly basis very easily. Say the stadium does well, say they sell out the first 3 seasons at $10 a seat(not likely, but for the sake of argument and low base ticket price in this analogy), the initial investment Loria would make over 10 years could be paid for in 4 years. Whether he keeps the team for 10 years remains to be seen, and I sure hope he doesnt. Another decade of a revolving door of players for prospects without attempting to sign any of them to long term deals would drive me batty. You btw pretty much re-iterated what I said about Loria getting a new stadium without putting any real money up for it. All of his payments every year are going to be made from money generated from the stadium, and not from his own pocket. And he will still have plenty left over to shove into his pockets and not use(on the team anyway).

And you dont think I will live another 30 years? That would leave me 20 years short of the life expectancy of the U.S. I hope you are wrong about that prediction sir. I truly do.

spike...i just think that if you hate loria that much...you shouldnt go to marlins games...and specifically in the new park....is that fair enough?

I am a fan of the team. I will watch them. I am just smart enough to realize with an owner like Loria a new stadium isnt going to change the way the team is ran.

i whole heartedly disagree...its not like this is pittsburgh

You think Loria is going to raise payroll? He has made a ton of money every year and still refused to put any of it into the team. Why would things change with a new ballpark, when he will have even more money to funnel into his piggybank without the Marlins seeing nary a dime of it?

Because he said he would? He also said he was losing money every year when that simply wasnt close to being true.

yeah im not going to rehash this argument which has been discussed at a ridiculous amount already

but he has proven before that he is willing to put money into our payroll...

When it suited his interests. He has the stadium now, no reason to put money into the team again. You saw how quickly it was all torn apart when he didnt get what he wanted. And the way the Delgado deal was structured sure made it seem like he planned on getting rid of him after the first season, stadium deal or no deal, without putting much at all up front. At the time we "marveled" at how the deal was structured, until it was really revealed that we just have a cheap owner who has no interest of funding the team to MLB levels. The Lowell deal, the Lo Duca deal, nothing more than ruses to show an attempt was being made. And like a spoiled child who doesnt get that new toy he wants, he destroys all the other toys in anger.

And these last few years where the payroll fell far short of what money he received before a ticket was even sold?

Keep living in fantasy land my friend. We are going to be MLB's farm system for as long as this guy is owner.

As for bringing up Santana earlier, Santana pitched 8 seasons in Minnesota. That included buyouts and big money deals. We dont even attempt that. Pohlard is a bad owner too, dont get me wrong, but at least attempts are made at their stars. Maybe when Hanley is gone to another ballclub after next season it will sink in. I guess having a team with a $20 mil payroll(less than what is set to be received in revenue sharing, $5 million less) is acceptable? Or the $15 mil we spent on the team in '06 that was around $15-20 million less than what was received just from revenue sharing.

Say what you want about Loria and Samson, but they have owned the team for what, 6 or 7 seasons and so far have delivered a World Series, the best 3 year run in our history, and oh yeah, have saved baseball in South Florida with a stadium deal. Do I like the fact that we have the lowest payroll in baseball? No, but I understand why they operate this way. That is why i'm giving them the benefit of the doubt until the new park opens.

LOL Fell out of my chair.

BTW I don't think the Manatees actually draw a pay check. They get 2 tickets for every game they appear in and I think that's it. Apparently no buffet either.
