Kevin Gregg = Useless!

Featured Replies

1) He isn't useless, but he shouldn't be closer.

2) We have noone to replace him with. Nelson has been pretty good but he starts pitching worse the moment anyone is on base.

So does Gregg. Like I said, I like the platoon idea but since Fredi doesn't know what a split stat is, it won't happen.

Gregg actually pitches better with men on base. Here are the hitter's stats against him:

Bases empty: .243/.354/.329
Men on: .121/.289/.136

His problem is when he puts guys on in the first place. And looking at those stats, you can tell walks are killing him.

He's throwing like 55% strikes, not particularly good.

27-33 is pretty much the worst BB-K ratio on the team. 6+ walks per 9 innings - worst BB/9 on the team

That's a disaster waiting to happen if you're throwing him in the game in the 9th inning with 1-run leads.

I wish the guy would go right after hitters because he hasn't given up a lot of hits, if the walks weren't part of the equation he'd be doing fine. Opposing batters are hitting just .188 against him which would be terrific.

Last night he threw 5 strikes and 10 balls right out of the gate to load the bases.

Then with the bases loaded he finally starts throwing strikes to Quintanilla and Spilborghs when he has no choice and they know it's coming.

Maybe we don't have better options, but he sure hasn't done much to hold the job.

And our defense continues to fail us.

Where would you put him? Setup? 7th inning guy?

I do not know much about him looking for insight = :notworthy :mis2

His ERA with RISP is 6.00. That's egregious for a closer.

That's terrible for anyone, but that doesn't mean that he's pitching worse with men on base.

I'd put him in a similar role to Doug Waechter or even the way we are using Nelson.

Not to defend Gregg, who should be flogged for his bonehead play last night, but that is the worst stat ever. The MLB ERA w/RISP is always around 8.85.

3) You didn't post the Superman Video.

Gregg has blown 5 saves this year, and I'd say at least 3 came when you weren't on the gamethreads...:lol

In all seriousness though...Gregg has blown the last 4 1 run save opps. (according to someone on this board).

...and for what it's worth...I wouldn't want the highest paid player on the team to be a middle reliever.

The organization is going to live and die with Gregg whether we like it or not.

Terrible, Rab. :lol

Btw, it's really funny...all this talk about Gregg (and rightfully so)...but nobody talks about Jeremy Hermida. He played terribly last night!

I didn't agree with bringing in Kensing in the 8th, but Kensing did great last night, imo.

For the record, about him being the highest paid player on the team, he is the 25th best played relief pitcher in the NL. If they are paid by the importance of their position, he is paid like a setup man.

I understand that...but I'm speaking in terms of the TEAM.

On the TEAM...he is currently the highest paid...just over 2 mill. This is like Jorge Julio. Gregg will stay in the role, until his #'s look terrible, and right now it's not...terrible.

The front office has its own push, and I'm sure they want Gregg to be the guy, right now, so I don't see a change, coming soon.

Don't compare Gregg to Julio.

I didn't.

When I said "This is like Jorge Julio," I was simply giving an analogy of the situation. The team was too patient with Julio (b/c he was the highest paid reliever of the team, at the time)...now it's Gregg. The Marlins are going to be patient with Gregg (at least until he completely has a meltdown)...baseball is a business, as well.

How bout putting nelson to close tonight c how it works

maybe try gulp.... pinto he waks peolple but gets outta the innngs

That would be like Gregg, no? I mean, for the most part, Gregg does the same thing.

Plus, Pinto is nice to have in middle relief. Not too many teams have 2 young lefties in the pen, like the Marlins do.

I'm surprised Doug Waechter hasn't gotten any votes yet...he throws strikes, and has had a good year.

Anyways, I actually agree with Miller23, but I don't agree to try it right now. The long-term answer, imo, will be Ryan Tucker. We just can't do that right now b/c our SP situation isn't all that great, at the moment.

how about this as a rule of thumb: every time a reliever walks the first guy he faces, mark wiley comes out with a paddle, and gives him 10 spanks with it out on the mound... negative reinforcement, classical conditioning... i swear if it can work with dogs, it can work with middle relievers.

i just want a guy like a k-rod or rivera that u know the other team fears and they dont want to see him....i really like gregg but if he just stopped walking guys he would have no problems....the stuff is there

thats a great point. keving Gregg would OWN if he just threw strikes, but the bastard refuses to do so. I'm telling you guys Ryan Tucker should be our new closer. He would kill as a closer.

We need the rotation help way too much, even after JJ gets back, to even think about this.

And for what it's worth, Gregg has thrown more strikes than balls in each of his last 3 appearances.

it's not worth anything when you can't hold leads and close out ball games.

I don't think they were too patient with Julio. Most people forget that they only gave him 10 appearances here, and only 3 in save situations (which he promptly blew).

It was too much for me. :lol

Man, he SUCKED!

At least Gregg makes a good case for being average.

Why is Gregg warming up? This is a f***ING JOKE. What the f***, what they should do is leave Waechter out there. Fredi is a stupid f***ing dumb f***
