Marlins interested in Willy Taveras?

Featured Replies

Well according to the ESPN Rumor Central they are. I'm not sure how I would feel about that, as Ross is really tearing it up now offensively. I'll admit, i don't know how Taveras is defensively so I can;t really compare him to Ross in CF. But he would be an asset coming off the bench. Thoughts?

When there was talk about getting him on 2006, I was all for it. I like Willy T. But now, neh. The only thing he would add to the team is speed. He's got great speed in the OF, but he takes bad routes, ala Juan Pierre.

I'd pass.

Wouldn't be bad an extra OF but there's only enough ABs for Hammer, Ross, Hermida and Gonzo....not sure where Taveras fits, unless the FO isn't confident in Cody. But man, I love having Cody in the lineup every day.

We have much more pressing needs than CF. I'd much rather pick up a catcher.

Let's be real here, Ross is not gonna keep this pace up. I hope I am wrong about that, but lets be honest. Willy is a good speed guy, who can really make pitchers lives a living hell on the base paths. Maybe it will be like Pierre/Castillo with Willy/Hanley.

I'm sorry, but to tear up the base paths, one has to actually be on the base paths. Why the hell would we go out of our way for .600-something OPS schmuck? Especially when we have an .850ish and likely .900ish player already? And Cody is not any worse than Tavares in CF because he is an excellent technical OF. And the stats, such as they are for defense, put him solidly upper half defensively at the position, and put Tavares firmly lower half.

Now that it is evident that he isn't a viable starter, which bench player would you lose? At most we are talking about Andino, who isn't any worse and can play more positions.

Cody's career OPS : 0.832

Cody's 2008 OPS : 0.838

I honestly think Cody has a great shot of keeping this exact pace up :whistle

Willy Taveras already has about 40 sb. He'd be a good asset. Also, as others said, Ross is very streaky and we all know he won't keep this pace up...I'd take him if the price isn't too high.

Free is too high because it would cost us a roster spot.

if willy is hitting the way he is in coors field...imagine him in dolphinstadium

Good point.

My guess is that this would be a deal that sends Taveras and Chris Iannetta our way. With maybe Cody Ross heading to the Rockies. That is the only way this supposed interest in Taveras makes sense to me.

i doubt they would put chris ianetta in the deal.

Especially just for Cody Ross.

Why can't Cody Ross keep his pace up?

If I may ask...?

I'd love to know that too. This seems about where Cody Ross belongs. He played ridiculously last season, probably quite a bit over his head. This seems more reasonable.

No doubt. I am talking about the main piece heading to the Rockies. The rest of the deal could be a mid/high level 'spect or Baker/Treanor/Rabelo + a mid-level 'spect.

taking cody out of a starting role would be a big mistake, let alone trading the guy.

the guys is just a gamer. he hits, he plays a nice center field.....he's a winner and we should want winners

i would be devestated if we traded ross. Great D, swinging the bat, and a pretty young guy. we have to keep him.

the rockies are not going to trade Ianetta.

They're a poor club like us, trading a way a several year club controlled .900+ OPS catcher would be so extremely silly on their part. He won't even be arbitration elligible until after next season.

I'm just trying to make sense of this rumor, because with the way things stand trading for Taveras would be just plain stupid.

Then again, Cody Ross did put on quite a show in Denver. I'm sure he raised a few eyebrows in the Colorado organization.

Now that it seems like we have our pitching figured out.

We need a "speedster" or, it would be nice, to get someone.

Actually, the short fences in Coors are bad for all hitters except power guys.

Coors Field aka "The Humidor" gives out warped stats during games.

It makes all the pitchers look worse than they are and all the hitters look better than they are, IMO.

The pitching situation is far from worked out. We could use some bullpen help for sure. Another starter as well, in case someone struggles or someone gets hurt.
