Sources told NVBC 6 an agreement in principle was reached between Marlins owners and Miami-Dade Mayor Alex Penelas. The deal would have to be approved by the county commission, which will reportedly consider the deal at its Nov. 4 meeting. The deal envisions the county putting up $73 million from a combination of hotel taxes and sports facilities taxes for the new stadium's maximum $325 cost. That cost excludes land. Under the deal, the team would contribute $137 million from future revenues, pay $10 million up front, and cover any cost overruns, assuming the deal is finalized by March 15, 2004. The city would have to come up with the land. There was no word on what role the state could play in getting a new stadium for the team, an issue that has been a sticking point between the Marlins and South Florida for years. The Marlins currently play at Pro Player Stadium in Carol City, a stadium they share with the Miami Dolphins. The stadium is not optimal for baseball, and the team has long sought a home of its own. If the new deal goes through, it would satisfy a Dec. 1 deadline that would to keep the county's hotel tax revenues from going to Miami Beach. Penelas reportedly reached the agreement in principle at a lunch with the Marlins' David Sampson on Tuesday. There were no details available on where the rest of the money would come from. During a raucous victory celebration for the World Series champions at Bayfront Park on Tuesday, Miami Mayor Manny Diaz drew cheers from the crowd when he referred to a possible stadium deal, asking the crowd, "If we build it will you come?" There are some apartments to the right of it and in back of it there are some business areas. In front of it, you got the Metro track.

In front of it, you got the Metro track. Logistically, it doesn't make sense to put it at the Miami Arena site. Sure its great to have it near the Metrorail tracks and that arena doesn't really do anything but collect bird doo doo. How much money would it take to buy all of those people out of those apartments and move the businesses else where? I'm sure everyone is going to look at all of those things and realize that maybe the Miami Arena site isn't the best place to put it.
October 29, 200322 yr Bayfront would make so much sense right now that the MetroMover is free (don't necessarily agree with that, but it is the truth) access isn't that difficult at all. And after the display there today, it would be cool. But oh well.

October 29, 200322 yr Damn i cant believe we might get our own stadium! Many more fans will come out now to support us. Also we wont be paying the PPS owner any money now and we can use that money for other things. Thank you Penelas and diaz.
