Marlins hope to swap a lefty for a lefty

Clubs that have spoken with the Marlins say they've been offering to swap out-of-sync lefthander Taylor Tankersley for a more experienced left-handed reliever. And Colorado's Brian Fuentes and Baltimore's George Sherrill are at the top of the Marlins' shopping list. But there are no indications they're close to a deal for either of those two.

Among the Florida names the Rockies are believed to have zeroed in on is right-hander Ryan Tucker, whose radar-gun numbers make him a potential closer candidate. But the Rockies still have a number of teams in the mix for Fuentes (Rays, Cardinals, Phillies, Yankees, Angels, Red Sox, etc.), and seem to want to push the bidding closer to the deadline.

Meanwhile, in Baltimore, teams that have talked to the Orioles are reporting that the team they had targeted in a Sherrill deal is Milwaukee -- whose system they've been scouting extensively recently. The Orioles are believed to have been asking about elite shortstop prospect Alcides Escobar and highly regarded third baseman Mat Gamel.

But Brewers GM Doug Melvin has been telling teams he isn't inclined to trade away any more prospects -- and told the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel's Tom Haudricourt on Thursday that he doesn't anticipate trading for a reliever before the deadline.

So the great pre-deadline bullpen shuffle of 2008 continues.

If we trade Tucker, I won't be happy, at all, really.

I'm with you, I think Tucker is going to be real good

We're looking to win now. You have to give up something good to get something good, this isn't MLB 2K8 or something. Remember 2003 ;)

I hear you. But I just don't think lefty bullpen help is going to push us over the top. Let's face it about 70% of our loses come from our starting pitching not the bullpen

And what is this "something good?"

Brian Fuentes? The same guy who will be out of here, once the season ends?

No thanks.

I mean, Fuentes would be nice, but I'm not for trading our 2 best pitching prospects (Volstad, Tucker) to get him.

The problem right now, isn't even the bullpen, as of late. Fuentes would definitely upgrade the pen, but he's not a superstar type player. Tucker has the potential to be a superstar type closer...he also has the potential to be an ace, if he develops another consistent pitch in the minors, to go along with his fastball and changeup.

You don't trade a 21 year old pitcher with potential, for a 2 month rental.

Tucker's a lot to lose, we should wait to see were we are closer to the deadline, and if we're in it for cereals, we should go ahead and make a deal.

Maybe not for Fuentes, but what if there was something like-

Marlins acquire- Doumit, Marte

Pirates acquire- Tucker, Tank and maybe Jake or Hermida (since Bay will probably be traded by the end of the month).

There is no prospect (we're not talking Maybin, Miller, you know the very small list) who shouldn't be available if it means playing in October. Not to mention some replacement parts on the active roster.

Maybe you trade prospects for other prospects who are either a better fit or otherwise blocked in their current system, maybe some combination of prospects and mlb-level players for the right guy(s), but very few names are truly off-limits when it comes to contending in September.

You might even take less to free up a roster spot you think you'll need as the pieces fall into place.

Personally, playing GM I still rank a situational hitter first and a reliever second but if Beinfest and Hill builds a better team by the deadline, how ever they do it I'm down with it. If the cost is a Tucker or even a Sanchez or Coghlan or two or three guys with futures I won't lose a minutes sleep. In fact I might sleep better.

Everybody here (well a little hyperbole there) seems to want to get to give."I want so and so, and we'll give them these guys..." seems the language of the day. You gotta give to get - even if it hurts and maybe it should - but what more people should be thinking is what does the other team needs that we can offer and still fill our need as well. The "sellers" aren't pushovers, probably more than a lot of other teams they need MORE not less in their effort to get competitive down the road, and if that means giving up the next Adrian Gonzalez for a rent a player, it isn't even open to debate, so long as it moves the team as a whole closer to the goal Hanley said this winter and repeated this spring that he wanted "his" team in the playoffs this season, not next, not three years from now, in 2008.

Don't forget that if Fuentes leaves after the season, he would probably net us 2 draft picks. I have nothing against trading unproven minor leaguers in exchange for All-Stars.

If it means trading Tucker and more, I'd rather just go with a cheaper option, who is also available.

Will Ohman

Career vs. Lefties: .183/.275/.294

Season vs. Lefties: .133/.198/.200

That's all this bullpen is really missing. A lefty who can DOMINATE lefties.

Ohman is an option, and we'd only have to give a minor leaguer, for a guy who would upgrade our bullpen.

I can agree with that if you're getting someone that could be a difference maker, ie C.C. Sabathia, Holliday. I don't think Fuentes falls in to that catergory. The bottomline is the Marlins are not built for the mortgage your farm system to win now. They don't have enough money to play that game. Yankees and Boston can easily do that because they can go out and throw 100's of millions to sign players to fill all their farm system gaps.

Tucker for a rental is a stupid deal..... Knowing Beinfest noway that happens....

Tucker is to good a prospect to give up for a guy that were gonna have for 2-3 months...

We'd ALL love to swap out Tank and not Tucker, but for just Tank, we're not going to get anything. He has sucked this year. We'd have to throw in a Tucker-type (and we have PLENTY of pitching depth remember) to get somebody that'll be worth anything.

I don't think any of those guys are worth getting rid of Tucker.

We have enough quality bullpen arms. We don't need to give up top prospects to fix an issue that isn't our biggest problem.

Tucker gives us nothing at the major league level this season. He's not going to impact a playoff race. Right now, he's nothing more to us than a 1st round pitching prospect with major league potential.

Fuentes on the other hand, gives us a proven All-Star caliber arm to lighten the load on our overworked bullpen. He's a safety net for if/when Gregg melts down, and in a worst case scenario, he still keeps Pinto's arm from falling off.

After the season, Fuentes will net us two compensation prospects with major league potential. So, in the end, we're trading a pitching prospect for two pitching prospects. How can you pass that deal up?

No, not really. Just look at the guy I mentioned in this thread (Ohman). Perfect fit; you wouldn't have to give up a Ryan Tucker.

As a matter of fact, it's no problem. By the 31st, when teams like the Rockies see that a team like the Marlins isn't budging (which Beinfest won't), the asking price will go down, as the deadline gets closer.

Tucker has potential, but he's far from considered a sure, can't miss prospect. The future is never certain. Yeah sure, we might trade for a player and miss the playoffs entirely, but for all we know it might be the best chance they have in the next five years.

And for all we know, we get Fuentes, we miss the playoffs, and Tucker becomes a stud, elsewhere. Works both ways.

It's not worth it.

Again, as I said...you want an upgrade for the bullpen? How about a guy you don't have to trade a 21 year old pitcher for? Will Ohman anyone?

There are cheaper options, who can get the job done just as well, for what this team needs (which is just an effective reliever to get lefties out, and compliment Nelson and Pinto, in middle relief).

If we're trading Tucker AND MORE (good chance they're asking for more than 1 prospect, at this point) for a 2 month rental (Fuentes), then I would hope the Rockies would add a guy like Chris Ianetta to the deal.
